I guess there is no need in telling you how hot it is. It s getting to be that time of year again when we sit inside and read tractor, car, or engine magazines because it s just too hot to do anything outside. Remember as kids we would run around all day outside and our mothers had to threaten us to come inside? This issue we have pictures from Burton, El Campo, Canton and Paris, (Texas). Burton Texas

Tech Talk In the past we have covered welding cast iron. We talked about how you can braze cast iron. This does have limits. It doesn t hold well for exhaust manifolds.

I have never used these so I can t speak for them. I hear they do a good job. You do have to heat the part up to be welded. There are nickel welding rods. I have used these.

8 Tech Talk In the past we have covered welding cast iron. We talked about how you can braze cast iron. This does have limits. It doesn t hold well for exhaust manifolds. It requires heating up a large area. It has a different expansion rate then cast iron which can make it crack at the weld. Then there are cast iron welding rods. I have never used these so I can t speak for them. I hear they do a good job. You do have to heat the part up to be welded. There are nickel welding rods. I have used these. They are expensive and the weld is not real pretty, but it is a strong weld and you can weld exhaust manifolds with it. They are not hard to use, and you do not have to heat up the area your welding. If your just trying to fix a crack, there are methods you can use. If the crack is in a water jacket you can do a rust weld. Basically, you let the crack rust. If your cooling system is pressurized, you may have to leave the cap off till the rust fills the void. This method will not work on wide cracks. The other method is called Metal Stitching. This is a time consuming method, but does work well. It involves drilling a small hole at the start of the crack. Then you tap the hole and run a cast iron screw into the hole until it is tight. Cut off the screw level with the surface. Drill the next hole partway in the screw you just put in, (over lapping halfway), tap it and screw another cast iron screw in and cut it off. Do this the entire length of the crack. Afterwards grind it flush and your ready to paint. You can buy these cast iron screws from real automotive parts stores. I m too lazy for this method, so I have one more for you.

There is one more method I was not aware of till about a month ago.

First I cleaned the area to be welded. I Veed out the parts. I then used a magnet to hold them together and proceeded to weld. The weld looked like any other weld from this machine. I then took a hammer and gave the parts I welded together a few raps and it held. So next time you need to weld some cast iron, you now have six methods to choose from. El Campo

Anyway, I need people to step up and let us get to know a little about you. Just write a paragraph or two of how you came to be interested in tractors, farm equipment, or old engines. Presidents Message Hey gang - hope all of you are staying healthy in this heat wave we seem to be once again experiencing. And speaking of once again, I'm going to keep this message short, sweet, and to the point as I did in the last newsletter. Today I'm focusing on safety with a simple reminder to all, particularly those that work outdoors, to keep yourself hydrated. Actually, I'm the guilty party this time as I had an experience just this past week while doing some welding and not drinking enough water to keep myself hydrated. Shortly after finishing the job, I became very light-headed and nauseated, then experienced some light chills. Folks, let me tell you that heatstroke can come on quickly and can result in serious problems, even death in extreme cases.

I'm told by the professionals that when we plan to work outdoors, particularly for any extended periods of time and in the heat of the day, we should drink 8-10 oz.

Long story short, don't do what I did and not take on any liquid simply because you want to finish the job and head indoors...stay safe!
