10 OVER THE ROAD (OTR) TRACTORS - COMPONENTS & OPTIONS - cont. Common Options Roof Mount Air Deflector Aerodynamic device that sits on tractor cab. Reduces drag and increases miles per gallon. Side Fairing Also Called Cab Extenders, these aerodynamic devices attach to the rear side of the cab. Side fairings reduce drag and increase miles per gallon. Tank Fairings Aerodynamic device that attaches to lower side of cab in front of the fuel tanks. Reduces drag and increases miles per gallon. Air Deflector Side Fairings Full Aerodynamics Complete Aerodynamic features (air deflector, side fairing, tank fairings) Headache Rack Aluminum or steel board used to protect the cab from moving cargo. Driver Side Airbag First introduced by Volvo in 1994, the semi tractor driver airbag protects the driver from head-on collisions. Tank Fairings Air Ride Cab A truck in which the cab rests on air suspension, providing a smoother ride for the driver. Headache Rack 10

11 Common Options OVER THE ROAD (OTR) TRACTORS - COMPONENTS & OPTIONS - cont. Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) An active alternative to engine idling. Increases fuel cost and decreases vehicle emissions. Commonly located near fuel tanks. Typical makes are Thermo King and Carrier. Fenders May be quarter, half, or full and may also be either stainless steel, chrome, or fiberglass. APU Moose Bumper These are heavy duty truck bumpers designed to minimize front end damage. Power Take Off (PTO) Device used to bring power from source (engine) to another unit such as a trailer. These are typically accompanied by a wet line kit, which connects hydraulic hoses to a trailer. Fenders Fifth-Wheel Coupling apparatus used to link truck to trailer. May be fixed, manual, or air slide. Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Safety system that allows wheels to maintain tractive contact with road while braking, preventing the wheels from locking up. This became standard on all over the road vehicles in Jake Brake An engine braking mechanism which opens exhaust valves in the cylinders in order to release trapped compressed air which slows vehicle. 12 OTHER TRACTOR TYPES Single Axle Work Tractors - Typically equipped with a 12,000lb front axle & 23,000lb rear axle. Single Axle Work Tractor (day cab) Tandem Axle Work Tractor (day cab) Tandem Axle Work Tractors - Typically equipped with a 12,000lb front axle & 40,000lb rear tandem axle. In extreme service, axle ratings may be 18,000lbs front & 48,000lbs rear (Michigan Specials). Common additional components are PTO/Wet Line Kits and/or walking beam (Hendrickson) suspensions. Hot Shot Tractors - Developed to circumvent the Commercial Driver License (CDL) requirements. They are designed to transport light and medium weight loads in a intra-state environment. These are typically equipped with a 7,000lb front axle & 17,000lb rear axles and spring suspension. Hot Shot Tractor 12

13 OTHER TRACTOR TYPES - cont. Yard Jockey (spotter) Tractors are typically designed and built for off street applications. Single Axle Yard Jockey Available in single or tandem axle configurations, they feature a hydraulically adjustable fifth wheel for quick movement and placement of semi-trailers. 14 OTHER TRACTOR TYPES - cont. Most tractors are available with either a Forward or Set Back front axle. Forward Axles offer a better ride. Setback Axles allow a shorter turning radius and provide a improved weight distribution. Forward/Setback Front Axle Trailer Toter Tractors are typically equipped with a 12,000lb front axle & 23,000lb rear axle. 16 GLIDER KITS - cont. Gliders are a complete truck Cab and Chassis Without the drivetrain components. Gliders include - a finished cab and hood, a complete interior, front axle and brakes, front suspension and steering, fuel tanks, electrical system and engine cooling system. Gliders do not include - an engine, transmission, differential, rear axle and rear suspension. * When built properly they can be worth up to 75% of the value of the same new vehicle. Factors that affect the value of Gliders are - Quality of construction. Age and condition of the drivetrain. Compliance with federal safety and emission standards. Under the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, the safe harbor 75% test Includes an exception of paying Federal Excise Tax (FET) on the purchase or use of a Glider Kit vehicle if the refurbishment is a result of suffering a total loss. 16

17 DUMP TRUCKS Class 3 Contractor Dumps are typically equipped with a 4,000lb front axle & 7,000lb rear axle. Class 6 Dump Class 4 and 5 Contractor Dumps have axles ratings of up to 5,000lbs front & 10,000lbs rear. Class 6 Single Axle Dumps are typically equipped with a 7,000lb front axle & 17,000lb rear axle. Contractor Dump **Common additional equipment for all Dump Trucks include cabguards, air gates, coal chutes, tarp assemblies, extended sides, pintle hitches, plows and salt spreaders. Grain Dumps have either single or tandem rear axles. The sides are constructed of lightweight sheet steel or aluminum. Grain Dump 17

18 DUMP TRUCKS - cont. Side Dumps have a pivoting ram that allows the body to tilt in three directions; right, left or back. Scissor Dumps have a two way hoist that allows either the entire body to raise or tilt from the front. Side Dump Scissor Dump Tandem Axle Dumps are typically equipped with a 12,000lb front axle and 44,000lb rear tandem axle. The dump bodies are of aluminum or steel construction. **Common additional equipment for all Dump Trucks include cabguards, air gates, coal chutes, tarp assemblies, extended sides, pintle hitches, plows and salt spreaders. 19 DUMP TRUCKS - cont. Tri-Axle Dumps have a third axle that can be either stationary or liftable (controlled up and down from the cab). The dump bodies can by either aluminum or steel construction. Tri-Axle Dump with Steel Body Dump Transfer Dumps combine a dump truck with a pup dump trailer, maximizing payload capacity. Particularly useful in states that of highway weight restrictions. **Common additional equipment for all Dump Trucks include cabguards, air gates, coal chutes, tarp assemblies, extended sides and pintle hitches. 20 BUSES School Bus - Conventional Cab School Bus - Flat Nose Conventional School Buses are built on Freightliner or Navistar Chassis, with capacities ranging from 35 to 72 passengers. These may be equipped with gas or diesel engines, typically with automatic transmissions. Flat Nose School Buses have a rear engine design, with capacities ranging from 60 to 84 passengers. They are typically equipped with a diesel engine and automatic transmission. Mini School Buses are built on Ford or GM chassis, with a capacity range from 4 to 20 passengers. They are equipped with a gas or diesel engine and an automatic transmission. **Common additional equipment for all School Buses include wheelchair lifts, raised floor and restraint systems. 21 BUSES - cont. Transit Bus Transit (municipal) Buses are built on NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) standards and have a capacity range from 30 to 50 passengers. They are equipped with a diesel or propane converted engine and an automatic transmission. Cutaway style Shuttle Buses are built on Ford or GM chassis, with a capacity range from 4 to 24 passengers. Shuttle Bus Charter Buses are designed for longer distance travel and commonly feature lavatories, underbody storage and aircraft style seating. **Common additional equipment for all Transit Buses include wheelchair lifts, raised floor and restraint systems. Charter Bus Party Bus Party Buses are typically built on cutaway chassis. They are designed to carry 10 or more people and used for recreational purposes. Common items include couches, speaker system, TVs, LED Lights, and carpeting. 21

22 EMERGENCY VEHICLES Type I Ambulances are based on 1 Ton Truck chassis with dual rear wheels. The patient module does not have a walk thru from the cab. Ambulance Type I Type II Ambulances are based on 1 Ton Cargo van chassis. They typically offer a raided roof and have a walk thru. Type III Ambulances are based on 1 ton cutaway chassis. The patient module has a walk thru. Ambulance Type II **All ambulances typically have dual OEM alternators, dual batteries, throttle idler, auxiliary transmission cooler, light bar, siren, flashers, warning lights, oxygen outlets, vacuum pump and modular cabinets. 23 EMERGENCY VEHICLES - cont. Type VII Ambulances are based on Class 6 chassis with dual rear wheels. The patient module does not have a walk thru from the cab. Ambulance Type VII Medical Attack Vehicle Squad Rescue Vehicle Medical Attack Vehicles (MAV s) are based on Class 6 chassis with dual rear wheels. The patient module does not have a walk thru from the cab. These vehicles are designed with both ambulance and fire-fighting equipment. A key feature of MAVs is that they do not transport people. Squad Rescue Vehicles (SRV s) are based on Class 6 chassis with dual rear wheels. The patient module does not have a walk thru from the cab. These are supportive vehicle which transport supplemental equipment. **All ambulances typically have dual OEM alternators, dual batteries, throttle idler, auxiliary transmission cooler, light bar, siren, flashers, warning lights, oxygen outlets, vacuum pump and modular cabinets. 23

24 MIXERS Rear Discharge Mixers are typically equipped with a 18,000lb front axle & 48,000lb rear tandem axle. Drum sizes range from 8 to 12 yard capacity. Rear Discharge Cement Mixer Rear Discharge Cement Mixer with Booster Axle Bridgemaster Mixers have a booster axle, allowing compliance with federal bridge laws. Front Discharge Mixers are typically equipped with a 18,000lb front axle & 48,000lb rear tandem axle. Drum sizes range from 10 to 12 yard capacity. **Common options on all Mixers include floatation tires, tax or pusher axles, front driving axle (6X6), night lighting, aluminum water tank, air lift charge hopper and a third chute. 25 REFRIGERATED TRUCKS Cold Plates have a heavily insulated body with a removable freezing unit. This allows for economical operation than running a cooling unit for day to day operations. The interior is defined by large cold plates. Cold Plate Refrigerated Van Refrigerated (Reefer) Bodies are insulated and have a cooling unit that is self powered by a gas or diesel engine. Refrigerated trucks offer a more controlled environment than a Cold Plate and can be left running for extended periods of time. Refrigerated Slide In Bodies are insulated and have a cooling unit that is self powered by a gas or diesel engine. Small units may be powered by the vehicle s engine through a PTO. 26 REFUSE PACKERS and RECYCLERS Container Trucks are mounted on medium duty single rear axle chassis and are designed to pick up one or two 3 to 8 yard hoppers. They typically are equipped with a 7,000lb front axle & 17,000lb rear axle. Container Delivery Load Lugger Load Luggers are severe service tandem axle trucks designed for heavy compact loads such as scrap metal or concrete. Container size range from 8 to 14 yards and typically are equipped with a 12,000lb front axle & 44,000lb rear tandem axle. Front Load Packers are available in standard or low profile configurations and have a capacity of 31 to 45 yards. They typically are equipped with a 18,000lb front axle & 44,000lb rear tandem axle. **Options include dual or right side steering, adjustable forks, scales and cameras. 27 REFUSE PACKERS and RECYCLERS - cont. Packer Rear Load Rear Load Packers are available in standard or low profile configurations with a capacity of 15 to 32 yards. Options include work lights, pusher or tag axle, winch, reeving cylinder, hopper liner, cart tipper, tipper bar, wash out tank, scale and cameras. These typically are equipped with 18,000lbs front & 44,000lbs rear axles. Side Load Packers are available in standard or low profile configurations with a capacity of 28 to 35 yards. Options include dual or right side steering, work lights, round floor, pusher or tag axle, wash out tank, cart tippers, scale and cameras. 28 REFUSE PACKERS and RECYCLERS - cont. Roll Offs are heavy duty tandem axle trucks designed for scrap or refuse applications. These typically are equipped with an 18000lb front axle & 44,000lb rear axle and 30 ton hoist. Options include an air operated third axle. Roll Off Recyclers are medium duty trucks with 8 to 12 compartments for the separation of materials. These are typically equipped with a 7,000lb front axle & 17,000lb rear axle. **Options include dual or right side steering, stand up steering, work lights and cart tippers. Recycler Stand Up 28

29 WRECKERS Roll Backs are medium duty trucks with 17.5 to 21 steel or aluminum decks that roll back and down at a 10 to 12 angle. Car Carrier (Roll Back) They typically are equipped with a 8,000lb to 10,000lb winch, tool box, safety chains and a light bar. **Common options include wheel lifts, motorcycle lifts, work lights, self loading dollies and diamond plate dress up kits. Wrecker Self Loading Wrecker with Wheel Lift Wreckers (tow trucks) are usually mounted on 1 to 1 ½ ton chassis. Wreckers may be either a traditional boom lift wrecker, or self-loading wrecker (T-Bar Style). They typically are equipped with a telescoping hydraulic arm, 8,000lb to 10,000lbs winch and safety chains. **Common options include single or dual lines, wheel lifts, motorcycle lifts, work lights, self loading dollies and diamond plate dress up kits. 29

30 WRECKERS - cont. Heavy Duty Wreckers are Class 8 trucks equipped with one or two hydraulic arms and a 30 to 50 ton winch. They are typically equipped with hydraulic extendable outriggers. 32 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS Cab & Chassis Catering Truck A Cab & Chassis is the base vehicle on which all bodies are attached. They may be gas or diesel powered and have axle ratings with a range of 5,000lbs front & 15,000lbs rear, to 12,000lbs front & 40,000lbs rear on a tandem. The length of the frame is critical in determining what size of body can be mounted. Catering Trucks are typically equipped with fully SS interior, shelves cabinets tables, 4 sinks, 2 bay deep fryers, steam table, char grill, flat top brittle, hood exhaust system, fire suppression system. Concrete Pumps are used to transfer ready mix from a mixer to a construction site. They typically have a boom reach of 60 to 100. Concrete Pump 32

33 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS - cont. Armored Trucks are typically mounted on Class 3 to 6 chassis. Features include full body armor, bullet proof glass and run flat tires. Common options include lift gates and remote cooling. Armored Truck Asphalt Distributor Asphalt Distributors typically have a 800 to 1500 gallon steel tank with a rear spray bar. 34 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS - cont. Boom Trucks are hydraulic cranes mounted on a medium to heavy duty chassis. They typically feature hydraulic outriggers, a 40 to 100 sheave (boom) height and jib. Lifting capacity ranges up to 15 ton. Boom Truck Bucket Trucks are typically mounted on a Class 3 to 6 chassis. Features include dual remote controls, extenda boom, rotating bucket, tool box body and hydraulic outriggers. Booms have a range of 18 to 60. Bucket Truck Bucket Truck Van Style 34

35 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS - cont. Crane Truck Curtain Van Crane Trucks have an independently mounted short boom crane on a frame or utility body. Typical specifications include a 12,000lb rating, but can go as high as 30 ton (60,000lbs). Typical boom reach is 10 to 20. Curtain Vans are similar to Dry Vans except the sides are open and covered with canvas tarpaulins. This allows access to all areas of the cargo body. Digger Derricks are trucks with a drilling rig mounted on a Class 6 to 8 chassis. They typically feature a 20 ton Winch and a 2 section boom mounted on a utility body. Digger Derrick 35

36 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS - cont. Dry Bulk Tankers provide sanitary storage and high speed unloading for bulk commodities. Construction is either aluminum or stainless steel. Tanker Flat Bed Trucks range from Class 3 (1 Ton) to Class 8. Typical accessories include side pockets for removable stakes, cab guards (headache rack) and a winch. Forestry Trucks are typically equipped with a grapple crane and a chipper body. They may also have 4 wheel drive. Flat Bed Forestry Truck 36

37 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS - cont. Fuel Tankers typically have 2 to 4 compartments and a pump and metering system. Construction may be steel, aluminum or stainless steel. Fuel Tanker Furniture Van with Attic Furniture Vans have a Dry Van type body with lowered body, side doors, additional interior tie downs and smooth plywood walls. Typical features include underbody storage and forward storage over the roof of the cab (attic). Grapple Trucks are normally used in forestry or refuse applications. 38 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS - cont. High Cubes are mounted on 1 ton cutaway chassis and constructed of aluminum or fiberglass re-enforced plastic (FRP). Bodies range in length from 10 to 16. High Cube Van Ladder Cranes are designed for sign work and feature a hydraulic boom with a range of 20 to 50. Landscaper Bodies are normally mounted on a 1 ton chassis. 39 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS - cont. Logging Truck Logging Trucks are typically equipped with a 16,000lb front axle & 44,000lb rear axle and heavy duty walking beam (Hendrickson) suspensions. Common equipment includes headache racks, bunk bodies, grapple loader, scales and additional axles. These may also be equipped with a piggy-back 1 bunk trailer used for hauling long logs. Lube Trucks are equipped with 1 or 2 fuel tanks, grease and oil tanks and tool boxes. Lube Truck Mechanic Trucks have an independently mounted short boom crane on a utility body. Typical specifications include a 4,200lbs to 10,000lbs boom with a 8 to 12 reach. Other common equipment include a welder, air compressor and vise. The model and year of the compressor and welder will affect the value of these trucks. Mechanics Truck 39

40 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS - cont. Service Bodies are normally mounted on a 1 ton chassis and feature 6 to 10 compartments. The center section may be open or enclosed. Service Truck Stake Bed Truck Stake Beds are flatbeds with fixed or removable side slates. These sides are typically made of wood or steel open construction. A Step Van is a complete body built on a forward control chassis. The body is normally made of aluminum or steel and range in length from 10 to 24. Step Van 40

41 MISC. INTER-CITY WORK TRUCKS - cont. Street Sweepers are equipped with a water tank and heavy adjustable brushes. They are typically mounted on single axle Class 6 chassis. Street Sweeper Utility Truck Utility Bodies are most commonly mounted on a 1 Ton chassis and feature 6 to 12 compartments with a open or closed center section. Options include a ladder/pipe rack. Vacuum Cleaner Trucks are equipped with a 1 or 2 compartment steel or stainless steel tank and vacuum pump assembly; and are used for pump out work on sewers and lavatories. Axle ratings range from 5,000lb 12,000lb front axle & 15,000lb 40,000lb rear axle. Options include nose cone, lift gate and side doors. Van Body Truck Water Truck Water Trucks are mounted on a Class 7 or 8 chassis and typically feature front, rear and side mounted spray heads, Capacities range from 1,500 to 6,000 gallons. Road Traffic Trucks are stake bed trucks that also have an arrow board and attenuator attached. An attenuator is a safety cushion that attaches to rear of the truck to protect workers. Most include a specialized rack that is positioned over the cab of the tractor. They are equipped with hold down winches and chains. Wedge trailers carry 3-4 cars and can either be tandem or tri-axle. A 5 car transport is typically a 5 th wheel trailer. Stinger car transports are car haulers that include a 3 car rack for the tractor, and a stinger trailer. Car transports may also be enclosed. The front gooseneck is self-lifting, with a locking ratchet which stays attached to the tractor for unloading. They are typically available with capacities of 30 to 60 tons, but can go as high as 150 ton with auxiliary axle assemblies. 54 DUMP TRAILERS Dump Frame Type Frame Type Dump Trailers have a full length frame support, are constructed of steel or aluminum and range in length up to 48. These trailers are more stable when dumping on uneven surfaces or when the load has shifted than frameless types. Frameless Dumps are lighter than frame type allowing more cargo. Construction is aluminum or FRP, interior lining of plywood or fiberglass, length range from 20 to 40, width from 96 to 102 and height up to Converter Dollies are a fifth wheel mounted on a single or tandem axle and are used to connect pup trailers. 58 INTERMODAL CONTAINERS & CHASSIS Intermodal Shipping Container Containers are designed to be shipped by rail or water and are mounted on a chassis for highway use. Construction is typically unlined steel and lengths vary from 18 to 45. Containers can also be refrigerated (typically constructed of aluminum). Container Chassis can be either fixed or adjustable in length. These are specifically designed for transporting intermodal containers. Common equipment includes rail pockets which allow insertion of stake sides, winches and D rings. A front Bulkhead is another common feature of flat beds. These are commonly bumper pull trailers and can have slide out or flip up ramps. Most car hauler trailers have a GVW of 7,000lbs. Equipment (Tag) trailers are typically tandem axle with the deck over the wheels. They are designed to carry heavy equipment, with a common GVW of 20,000lbs (10 Ton). Gooseneck Flatbed Trailers are equipped with a gooseneck fifth wheel adapter and typically have a 20,000lb to 25,000lb GVW. They are commonly seen with a dovetail and flip up ramps. 67 LIFTGATES and WHEELCHAIR LIFTS Lift gates are designed to raise loads from the ground to trailer level. They have a capacity range from 1,000lbs to 10,000lbs and may either fold under the body or stand up against the rear when not in use.
