1 Mica - Waterfall Breakfast outing 24 November, 2012 By Jack Clough and Theo Alberda Another long period of rain, and more rain, preceded this event. For the Saturday heavy rain was predicted late. We were concerned that this might have a negative impact on the day. But, we were greeted with a very hot humid morning, somewhat overcast but dry. What a relief! In total seventeen cars arrived and what a selection we had! There were Mk 2 s, XK 140, XK 150, Jaguar Daimler V8, E Types (3.8, 4,2 and 5.3 litre roadsters and fixed head coupes), S Type 3.8, 420 G, XJ 6, XK 8 and an XJS WOW! Doug and Shalene Knox had kindly agreed to let us use their XK 150 for the day. It, however, had been in Jack s workshop for the past three weeks or so to have power steering fitted. The power rack and pinion kit arrived earlier in the week and what was expected to be a simple bolt on affair proved to be anything but. Jack was determined that this fine example would be ready in time and worked late through the week to meet the deadline. The car was only finished at 8 PM on Friday night. But finished it was! (Some time consuming, but minor loose ends, were left for the next week) We were hoping to have a really broad selection of Jaguar classics but were missing an XJS. Chris Swale came to the rescue and kindly lent us his nice example. Jack took it up to Mica at 6 AM on the day and went straight back to his workshop to wash the XK 150 which had become rather dusty over the three weeks it had stood in the workshop. Our sincere thanks to Chris, Shalane and Doug Knox for the loan of their cars. Deserving of special thanks is Peter and Vanessa Micklewright who flew to Durban from Maputo especially for this event so as to ensure we had an XK 140 in the line-up. Many thanks Pete and Vanessa your dedication is highly appreciated. The event coincided with the launch of Maguire s car care products. They offered to do a makeover on Theo s E type but it had to be left in the store for two days ahead of the event. A little apprehension here but they did an absolutely great job and the before and after was quite remarkable. The area cordoned off in front of the store could hardly fit us all in. Breakfast was arranged at the coffee shop in the centre and proved to be a nice social gathering. Three of the Pietermaritzburg folk, Robin Phipson, James Guimaraens and Brett Peattie also graced us with their company. They and their cars certainly added to the occasion. Ian and Maxine Ross, the owners of Mica Waterfall, and our hosts, were most welcoming and generous. Besides being treated to a breakfast we were given great goody bags containing car care products and vouchers for Mica. It seemed most folk had fun spending them in a store that tries very hard to be a one stop shop. They stock an enormous range of DIY, hardware, car products etc. Glen Tayfield was on hand to explain the wide range of Holt s products available. Their octane booster was of particular interest to the guys running 9:1 compression engines. Then, there was the draw for the high pressure water cleaners. Peter Micklewright was one of the winners which seemed most appropriate, considering the effort he and Vanessa made to be with us! Page 1 of 21

What made this offer particularly attractive were the very pretty young ladies doing the job. We noticed many of our male contingent eyeing the young ladies but none dared to have their precious Jaguars washed by them! Page 2 of 21

3 And, we had a couple of lighter moments. Lorrie Henning decided to rock up in his 1960 s Trabant and park it amongst the pristine Jaguars. This was cause for much amusement. You could say that, from a car perspective anyway, this is somewhat extreme. A rather tatty Trabant, from the East German communist era, amongst those beautiful and rare Jaguars but, bear in mind that Lorrie s Trabant station wagon, fitted with a smelly and noisy two stroke engine, is extremely rare too. That estate is thought to be the only one in SA! Good one Lorrie! That fellow standing there can t believe his eyes! Included in the goody bag was a voucher for the centres lingerie shop. Later, we actually caught Jack standing amongst the ladies bras. Appears they did not have his size! Caught in the act... Jack sizing up the bras! 5 James Guimaraens imported 3.8 litre S Type. The resemblance to the MK is clear but the restyled boot was bigger and the rear suspension (from the E Type) gave a much improved ride. Page 5 of 21

Jack completed the power steering modification in the nick of time with some loose ends left till the following week. Notice the oil pimp of the newly installed power steering on the lower LH side.
