Chairman s chatter. Over the years our clubs numbers have dropped and with it the participation and enthusiasm of its members. At the last AGM in June we considered disbanding the club but it was unanimously decided that we should continue at least for one more year and then re-assess. I now look back over the past six months and I see promise. We have in place a magnificent website Thanks Theo and also this in no small measure due to the dedication and competence of our webmaster John Austin-Williams to whom we are truly thankful. There was also great response from our members; just look at the contributions made under Our cars as an example. Some other initiatives were also taken, for example, we made name tags for all the members and Rene Missen very kindly had made, and donated, exquisite shirts for our members. We have been on runs with our midlands friends and celebrated our Twenty-year anniversary lunch in style at Keith de Klerk s Car barn. What a great venue and again shared with our midlands friends. We had special caps made for this occasion. The run to the Victoria club for lunch earlier in the year was arranged by Nigel and was a combined effort with the local Bentley and Rolls Royce enthusiasts. This was a great success and set the tone for similar combined events in the future. The same approach was applied for the Christmas lunch.again arranged by Nigel, who did an excellent job for us on behalf of the Bentley, Rolls and Jaguar fraternity. We are very grateful to Nigel for his efforts and hope that there will be other opportunities in future. 1

2 The Mica event. This was also a great success! When did you last see such a spread of seventeen classic Jaguars. We need to look for similar opportunities in the future. The event is reported in detail (with some stunning photographs) and can be found in our web under Events /past event. We also had some support from our Pietermaritzburg friends and their presence was certainly appreciated. A great time was had by all! And the joint venture with the Bentley club at the Durban Country club was a great finale. We hope to put together a short write up on this event soon. Yes we have had some super events this year and joining forces with the Bentley club and Pietermaritzburg lads seems the way to go. There is no need to dwindle on that just look at the write ups under past events in the web site! We have no events planned for the early part of the year and would greatly appreciate some ideas. We have heard rumour of a visit to the Steinbank castle and lunch (or breakfast) runs to the Valley of a Thousand Hills or Midland meander. I would greatly appreciate if one of our members could take the initiative and firm up some events. I understand that there are some folks interested in the Goodwood revival event next year. Speaking from experience I can assure you this is an event of a Lifetime. Sure, it is expensive because of the air fares and accommodation, but if you can afford it you will never regret it! Some 2000 classics in the car park. Please contact me if you need any details as it sells out! Some folks are also thinking of attending the George car show and then Knysna speed week later. The Cape club is organising the Jaguar jamboree for September. Some great events in the pipeline and there must be opportunities for a bunch of our members to attend in a same way we did for the Queenstown run last year to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the E Type? Please contact me if you are interested? A single club logo was unfortunately, not resolved. We have a growler and this was the preferred option by only by a margin of one! Vincent had some other logos developed by a graphic artist which Doug kindly agreed to sponsor. A short list of growler and leaper logos was sent out for our members to consider. Sadly, the response was very poor. Vincent took the initiative and did some canvassing during the MICA event and we decided the club should have both: an example a Leaper and a Growler. Theo and I visited the Dealer principle at Umhlanga Jaguar to gauge their interest in participating in some of our club events. Their response was very positive. They agreed to join us at our Christmas lunch sending seven couples. We also used the opportunity to touch on the subject of our logo. It seems that we could actually violate patent rights by using a leaper and /or growler in our logo. The DP agreed to take this up with Jaguar on our behalf. Our club logos, Leaper and Growler, have been sent to Jaguar SA and UK for approval. We certainly do not want to run foul of Jaguar in this regard! We are waiting for a response. Here they are: This month we have two new members, Chris Swale and Mervyn Payne. Welcome guys, we are so pleased to have you with us. 2

And what of the future of our club? As I mentioned previously I will be standing down as chairman next year. This year the administration of the club has been a tall order.

I have, with a great deal of help from Theo, Jill and Lyne tried to cover all portfolios. I have done this in addition to running a business, acting as an advice consultant and facing some rather difficult personal issues. We need to find a new chairman next year and the other office bearers to support him. If that cannot be resolved then I believe the club will not be able to continue. Please give this matter some serious consideration. In the light of the progress we have made this year it will be very sad indeed if the club folds! In conclusion may I take this opportunity to wish all a very happy Christmas, a prosperous and above all healthy Forthcoming Events We don t have any events planned for the next month or so. Seductive Design: Concept Speedboat by Jaguar Cars (Submitted by Gordon Hall...thanks Gordon) Jaguar Cars has today unveiled an exciting and unique styling concept at the international driving debut of the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake. The Concept Speedboat by Jaguar Cars showcases the design DNA of the British premium luxury and sports car manufacturer in an unexpected and spectacular package. Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum is at the forefront of the Concept Speedboat. Callum explained: We recognise that both our existing and future customers enjoy diverse and active lifestyles. With the launch of the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake, we had an opportunity to create a vision of how our design philosophy might be applied to an alternative product, in which speed and beauty are also priorities. The Concept Speedboat looks powerful. It follows, in so many ways, the idea of a traditional speedboat but with the sleek and fast characteristics that you would expect from a Jaguar Car. 10

11 Jaguar Cars consulted with a yacht design specialist* and a bespoke design project management company** throughout the development of the Concept Speedboat. The Concept Speedboat has a gel coat fibreglass hull finished on top with a natural teak decking. This is split by a carbon fibre fin, inspired by the iconic Jaguar D-Type. The front of the boat flows seamlessly into the screen and the red 2+1 cabin follows the sporting character of Jaguar cars. Jaguar Cars heritage is also subtly recognised with fuel filler caps inspired by the Series 1 XJ. A polished aluminium propeller and pop-up mooring post imitates how the boat could be powered and docked respectively. I have always had a passion to create such an object and it seemed fitting that we relate this to a lifestyle vehicle such as the Jaguar XF Sportbrake. The two sit together perfectly. The new XF Sportbrake is the most versatile derivative of the award winning Jaguar XF to date. It represents a compelling combination of muscular yet elegant design, dynamic ability, contemporary interior luxury and, with a load-space capacity of up to 1675 litres, a no-compromise approach to practicality. Matching the XF saloon for aerodynamics, torsional stiffness and dynamic handling ability, it is powered exclusively by Jaguar's range of powerful, refined and efficient diesel engines. The rear wheels are driven via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.2-litre engine is fitted with Jaguar's Intelligent Stop-Start system, making it the company's most efficient powertrain to date, while the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 is available in two states of tune, with 275PS in the range-topping Diesel S. I guess that sometimes I feel like you are pushing me too hard when you want something. I realize that I was wrong and I am apologizing for being such a hard-headed guy. All I want is for you to be happy and be able to enjoy the holiday season. Nothing brightens the Christmas spirit like Christmas lights! I took the time to hang the lights for you today; and now I will be off to the hockey rink. Again, I am very sorry for the way I acted yesterday. I'll be home later. Something different! Many of us will never be able to own all the vehicles we admire but a miniature is a possibility? We came across this interesting XK 140 die cast. If you are into die cast toys like Dinky Toys then ODGI Toys of Yesterday may well appeal to you? ODGI Toys of Yesterday. Researched from the Internet The 1:48 scale Odgi Toys of Yesterday Series Jaguar XK140 Convertible Jupiter made of Diecast Metal is Number 2118 in the range. 13

14 Odgi's Toys of Yesterday Series are hand-cast metal models designed to compliment Dinky Toys of the 1930s through 1950s. Some models are intended to fill the gaps in the Dinky range which were not issued. Some other models are the talented maker s ideas on what could have been offered. Most new cars which were sold in the immediate post war period, were more or less the same as their pre-war ancestors. This was because most companies had neither the time nor the money to introduce new car ranges straight away. And this was good news for Dinky as they could then re-issue many of their pre-war models. However some were pre-war prototypes that had been planned by Meccano (Dinky s Parent Company) but they were never introduced, and these were selected for post-war production. There were many other pre and post war drawings for models of buses, trucks and automobiles that were never produced by Meccano. In 1980, John Hodges decided to experiment in the competitive toy market by attempting to fill the gap left by Meccano. Originally John Hodges started this as a hobby focusing on civilian vehicles. But, the results were so astonishing and initial demands were so high that he decided to start his own home based production. The name "Odgi" came from Hodges' nickname, pronounced "Aw Gee." John carefully made the drawings using photographs of real vehicles as well as using his extensive experience from when he worked in a toy factory for Lines Brothers - the well-known maker of Tri-ang toys. Once the prototype was mastered, he would send it to a tooling firm who produced the number of models John wanted. For the emerging Toys of Yesterday line he chose a particular car The Triumph Dolomite model as his first try. Being a newcomer he forgot to register his patent, and very soon the design was reproduced by a well-known toy company. Without any legal resource he was forced to sell the master item. He then re-mastered the Dolomite, now with the knowledge of how to protect the design. The end result was so striking that demand for the model, especially from Dinky collectors was so high it had to be re-issued many times. Other models quickly followed such as the Jowett Bradford Van, the Jaguar XK150 and Ford Consul MKII Saloon in After a 5 year hiatus Odgi came back into production with the 1953 Daimler Conquest Sports Car. John Hodges is still active in producing Odgi Models, and they have become collectables in their own right.
