Well as you will recall I will be standing down as chairman this year. It s been more than ten years that I have held this position and now it s time for me to catch up on some other pressing matters like the restoration of my 3 AC s. Lyne and I also want to do a bit of travelling. I have to admit that I feel mixed emotions at the thought, but I will always be available to help out those who require any technical assistance I can offer. Theo, as you know, will be departing for the UK later in the year so we will need someone to look after the editor s position as well. This will therefore, be the last news letter from Theo and I. Peter Micklewright has advised that he will not be able to take up the chairman s post in June as originally planned but might be available after the end of the year (business pressure in Maputo). We need to find a club member to hold the fort from June to December. We will also need a treasurer, secretary and editor. Please folks lets have some volunteers! I assume that Chris will continue as the events co-ordinator? I had planned to make my way to the Simola hill climb in Knysna. I felt that I should attend the Knysna event as there will be a JACASA meeting and someone must represent our club. However, after some thought I believe as the outgoing chairman it makes little sense for me to attend. I was hoping that Peter might be able to make it but he is under considerable pressure from work with his ship in the dry dock, plus overseeing the building of his new home, and this might be expecting a bit much. I will be available to attend the VSCC Cars in the Park and really hope that the Midlands club will combine with us to put on a great show. Our club was recently invited to attend the celebration of Robin Phipson MK 2 s 50th at Keith de Klerk s Car Barn in Pietermaritzburg. What a great day. More details are provided in this newsletter. The date of the AGM has been set for the afternoon of 14 June Venue will be Theo s home as last year. Details will follow in due course. We are aware that this is over a long weekend. If there are any who can t make it please let us know and then nominate somebody by proxy. That s it for now Yours Jack. 1

Jack helped Rajesh and this is what he had to say; Forthcoming Events Dear Mr Clough, I am deeply indebted to you for all your guidance Knowledge and assistance provide in the restoration of my TF. When one engages with you it can become confusing, however I think that I am able to understand you. Your sense of humour needs to become viral as too many people are too serious and forget to live life. You are a Gem in this lifetime and I am sad that I was unable to interact with you sooner. Going forward, I believe that I can call on you for your wisdom and wealth of knowledge. Experience is the greatest teacher. Those that thought that I bought a Dud are in for a rude awakening. Thanx to you for making me famous and successful. The other news is that I have a job in Pretoria and still with Telkom. I am commencing work on the 5 th May. Short notice as I was informed late. I am still hopeful that I can see you on a Saturday when I come home as I am only re-locating my family at the end of the year. Thanx again. Rajesh Thulsie Check out the Events section on our web. It is with much sadness that learnt of the passing of Jeffery Mentoor. Jeffery, you may recall, worked for Peter Micklewright as a sheet metal worker. Many will have seen him doing great work on the English wheel. He was a very skilled artisan and will be deeply missed. Technical And, what is this? Answer at the end of the newsletter! 2

3 NEWS Some folks have all the luck. Our events coordinator Chris Hewitt was recently invited to track test the F Type. While there he picked up a brochure of the F Type containing images of the soon to be released coupe. This photograph is an extract from that brochure. Stunning! 5 Out and about The celebration of Robin Phipson MK 2 s 50th anniversary A great day was had by all on Sunday 27 April at Keith de Klerk s Car barn. Always a magnificent venue! Our club was represented by Jack Clough, Theo Alberda, Garth Mekisich, and Mervyn Payne plus partners. We were welcomed by Margaret and Keith with coffee, tea and amazing cupcakes. The bar was open and Robin picked up the tab. Braai fires were lit. Robin purchased the car, a 3.8 litre from his boss s father while working in Sasolburg in The car went through a full restoration project in 1999 taking some five years turning it into the magnificent example you see today. Outside of that period the car was regularly used for routine and long distance commuting and is still used as daily transport. 5

Some amazing stuff always comes out of the woodwork, considering we live out in the colonies in deepest darkest Africa! Howz about a (Welsh) Gilbern Invader? Ever heard of a motor called Burton? (headlights looked more like gas lamps!) will have to google that one, I m afraid. Extremely rare Jensen Interceptor FF (Ferguson Formula 4 wheel drive) gave me immense pleasure (straight 2 wheel drive Interceptor would do me just fine, thanks very much). Some tasty classic Maserati s & Lancia s too. E-type thankfully back in fine fettle; always nice to arrive in your own classic! Fun trick: eavesdropping on fellow car enthusiasts talking about my car, when they don t know I m the owner! = generally good for the ego, even if they do get some of the anorak facts about E-types incorrect. Met a couple walking their boxers around the park one mama dog with a docked tail (pre banning) & her sibling with long tail (still cannot get used to that). The husband owns an E-type (not on show) which gave me food for thought, although I suspect our dear Greta will always be the benchmark. I asked them if I could take a picture & the lady owner automatically moved away not understanding that I wanted the boxers to be the main focus with my car in the background, contrary to most of the crowd who only had eyes for the cars! 8

It is a tool specially made up by Jack to remove the worn bearings from the hubs in the rear suspension of Chris Hewitt s 1965 E Type. The splines in the hub are installed with lock tight. It took just over 13 tons to press the shaft and bearings out. Please remember to continue sending in your contributions, suggestions and comments and keep driving your Jaguars.
