The ser may sffer injry or case damage to property as a reslt of failre to control the direction of fall, the tree may splinter or damaged/dead branches may fall dring ctting. The safe distance between a tree to be felled and bystanders, bildings and other objects is at least 2 1/2 times the height of the tree. Any bystander, bilding or object within this distance is at risk from being strck by the tree when felled. Before attempting to fell a tree: Make sre that there are no local by-laws or reglations that wold prohibit or control the felling of the tree. Consider all conditions that may affect the direction of fall, inclding: The intended direction of fall. The natral lean of the tree. Any nsal heavy limb strctre or decay. Srronding trees and obstacles inclding overhead lines and ndergrond drains. The wind speed and direction. Pre-plan a safe exit from falling trees or branches. Make sre that the exit rote is clear of obstacles that wold prevent or hinder movement. Remember that wet grass and freshly ct bark is slippery. Do not attempt to fell trees where the tree diameter is greater than the ctting length of the chainsaw. Ct a direction notch to determine the direction of fall. Make a horizontal ct to a depth of between 1/5th and 1/3rd of the diameter of the tree, perpendiclar to the line and make a notch of abot 45. Make a single horizontal felling ct from the other side 25 Q). Do not ct throgh to the direction notch, yo cold lose control of the direction of fall. Drive a wedge or wedges into the felling ct to open it and Prning trees Make sre that there are no local by-laws or reglations that wold prohibit or control the prning of the tree limbs. Prning shold only be ndertaken by experienced sers there is an increased risk of the saw chain pinching and kick back. Before prning consideration shold be given to conditions affecting the direction of fall inclding: The length and weight of the branch to be ct. Any nsal heavy limb strctre or decay. Srronding trees and obstacles inclding overhead. The wind speed and direction. 12 The branch being intertwined with other branches. The operator shold consider access to the tree limb and the direction of fall. The tree branch is liable to swing towards the tree trnk. In addition to the ser bystanders, objects and property below the branch will be at risk. T - tion to a maximm depth of one third the diameter of the branch. How yo shold ct depends on how the log is spported. Use a saw horse whenever possible. Always start a ct with the saw chain rnning and the spiked bmper (20) in contact - tion of the spiked bmper against the wood. When spported along its whole length: Make a downward ct, bt avoid ctting the earth as this will blnt yor saw chain qickly. When spported at both ends: First, ct one third down to avoid splintering and second, When spported at one end: First ct one third p to avoid splintering and second, ct down to prevent splintering. When on a slope: Always stand on the phill side. Secre the workpiece sing chocks or wedges. The ser or a bystander shold not steady the log by sitting or standing on it. Make sre that the saw chain does not contact the grond. This is strongly recommended whenever possible. Position the log in a stable position. Always ct on the otside of the saw horse arms. Use clamps or straps to secre the workpiece. Removing the branches from a fallen tree. When limbing, leave larger lower limbs to spport the log off the grond. Remove the small limbs in one ct. Branches nder tension shold be ct from the bottom of the branch towards the top to avoid binding the chain saw. Trim limbs from opposite side keeping tree stem between yo and saw. Never make cts with saw between yor legs or straddle the limb to be ct.
