These are an overview of the process that will be performed by a skilled technician in our shop. They are not intended to be a guide for a do-it-yourself operation. 7
Control arm bushing replacement Carefully lift the vehicle using an approved automotive lift. Inspect control arm bushings for cracks. Remove any worn suspension components according to the vehicle manufacturer s instructions. Install the new components and perform a wheel alignment. Test drive the vehicle. Your front suspension needs to work in harmony with the steering and shock absorbers or struts to give you a confident safe ride. AI-60 Worn or cracked bushing New suspension parts will reduce tire wear and may eliminate a pesky noise. It will also improve ride quality. New bushing Wheel alignment Inspect the front and rear suspension components for any signs of wear or damage. Using specialized wheel alignment equipment, adjust the suspension and wheels to the vehicle manufacture s specifications. Vehicle suspensions can wear with age and repeated heavy use. Rough road surfaces and an occasional pothole can change the vehicle s wheel alignment. A wheel alignment can improve your steering control and overall vehicle handling. It can also help prevent abnormal tire wear by bringing the vehicle suspension components back to the vehicle manufacturer s specifications. This important step will keep your vehicle driving the way it was designed to. An alignment is necessary any time a worn suspension part is replaced. AI-70 Abnormal tire wear from bad alignment Even slightly worn suspension components can affect the vehicle's wheel alignment. This can lead to premature wear of tires and reduce overall vehicle comfort and safety. A vehicle with worn-out suspension parts can be unsafe to drive. Maintaining your vehicle suspension and performing regular wheel alignments and tire rotations can keep your vehicle safe and reliable. Wheel alignment 8
Bulb replacement - license The technician will remove the license plate assembly and determine if it can simply be cleaned or if it must be replaced. The technician disconnects and inspects the wiring and connectors to ensure that the corrosion has not contaminated these. Once the electrical components of the new assembly have been reconnected, the technician will install a new bulb and reassemble the part into the deck lid assembly. Most laws require that vehicles maintain lights on the license plate at all times after dark. This not only helps with the visibility of your car, but it also saves you from getting an unnecessary ticket. AI-92 License plate bulb disassembled The old and corroded bulb assembly will, if left unattended, create unneccesary resistence in that wiring circuit. This is dangeous as it will continue to burn out bulbs and could cause other damage such as melted wires, corrosion in the wiring harness, and shorts in the elctrical components. It is wise to maintain this system of your vehicle. Air filter replacement Remove the air filter element from the air filter housing. Clean the air filter housing and inspect the fresh air duct hose for damage, dirt, or obstructions. Inspect the warm air intake hose for signs of deterioration. Install a new filter element, and then reinstall the air filter housing access panel. A dirty or clogged air filter can affect the fuel economy and overall vehicle performance. Both diesel and gasoline powered engines are designed to maintain a specific air-fuel ratio. A restricted air filter can affect the way the engine maintains the correct air-fuel mixture. If the air filter is restricted, the fuel mileage and overall vehicle drivability can deteriorate rapidly. Working license plate bulbs AI-102 Dirty and restricted air filter Replacing your air filter element is a quick and effective way to keep your engine running at its peak performance. A clean air filter helps your engine work more efficiently by letting the airflow get to the engine with no restrictions. A clean air filter can also prolong the life of your engine. New air filter 9
Power steering pump replacement After releasing tension on the serpentine or power steering belt, loosen the bolts holding the pump to the mounting bracket. The high pressure line and fluid return lines are the disconnected and the power steering pump is removed. The pulley is removed from the vehicle and reinstalled onto the new pump. O-rings, gaskets and lines are replaced as needed. The power steering pump is reinstalled and the fluid topped off. The power steering fluid is bled to remove excess air in the system. (The vehicle may need to be lifted on a jack or hoist to complete this process.) Special tools are required for removal and installation of the pulley and fluid lines. The power steering pump pressurizes the power steering hydraulic system. The power steering fluid runs through hoses and moves the steering back and forth through valves, plungers, or pistons. When the pump stops pumping, the pressure drops and the power steering system loses its hydraulic power. Worse yet is that small bits of the rapidly disintegrating pump may lodge themselves in the dark reaches of the system and cause even more potentially expensive problems. Power steering reduces the effort required by the driver to maneuver a vehicle. Loss of power steering makes the steering wheel more difficult to turn and may result in the failure of a driver to maintain control of the vehicle. Without the pressure provided by the power steering pump, avoiding obstacles in the road can be more difficult and even pose a safety hazard. Windshield wiper blade replacement Remove the wiper blade inserts from the wiper arms following the vehicle manufacturer's instructions (found in the owner's guide). Install new wiper blade inserts onto the wiper arms. Thoroughly clean the windshield. The ability to drive safely interests all of us. Having a clean windshield is a necessity for safe driving. Most driving decisions are dependent on the driver having a clear view of the road ahead. Worn or torn wiper blades do not effectively clean the windshield, and a dirty windshield can obstruct the drivers view, possibly resulting in an accident. AI-129 Failure of the power steering pump can cause even more potentially expensive problems The power steering pump pressurized the power steering hydraulic system AI-147 Impaired view from worn wiper blades Most wiper blade manufacturers recommend replacing your wiper blades or wiper blade inserts every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Something as simple and as inexpensive as replacing your windshield wiper blades will make your driving experience for you and your family a safer one. New wiper blades 10
Brake pad/shoe replacement Remove the wheels. For disc brakes, remove the brake caliper and then remove the brake pads. Inspect the rotors for signs of damage or excessive wear. Replace or resurface the rotor as necessary. Inspect the brake caliper and brake hoses for damage and leaks. Replace the brake pads. For drum brakes, remove the brake drum. Remove the brake shoes. Inspect the brake hardware, wheel cylinders and hoses for damage. Inspect the brake drum for damage, or excessive wear. Replace or resurface the drum as necessary. Clean the brake drum and backing plate. Replace the brake shoes. Reinstall the brake drum. Adjust the brakes as necessary. Reinstall the wheels and torque the lug nuts to the vehicle manufacturer s specifications. This repair is all about safety. Your vehicle s brake system is only as good as your brake pads and/or brake shoes. The safety of you and your family depends on your brake system working properly and stopping your vehicle - every time. Aside from the obvious safety issues, neglecting the maintenance of your brake pads and shoes can cause the friction material on your brake pads and shoes to completely wear out. This can cause the steel backing on your brake pads or shoes to contact the rotors or drums and will destroy the rotors or drums, leaving you with an expensive repair bill. AI-152 Damaged brake rotor from metal-to-metal contact New brake pads There are no shortcuts when it comes to your vehicle s brakes. Having a professional automotive technician check and service brakes on a regular basis is essential to your safety behind the wheel. Maintaining your brake system by replacing your brake pads and shoes before they are completely worn out will help keep your brakes working properly and save you money by avoiding unexpected damage to your brake components caused by metal to metal contact. 11
Crankcase seal (main seal) replacement The front crankshaft seal is easier to replace than the rear crankshaft seal. The rear crankshaft seal is usually where the transmission is, thus replacing it requires removing the transmission, clutch and flywheel assembly. The cost of the crankshaft seals themselves is very low; however, the labor required can cause the cost to rise dramatically. The crankshaft seal is one of the most important seals in your vehicle. There are typically two types of crankshaft seals. One is the front crankshaft seal, the other is commonly referred to as the rear crankshaft seal. Alternate terms are front and rear main seals. The crankshaft seal is what seals the openings on either end of the crankshaft and helps maintain the crankcase seal. These seals must be highly durable, made of superior components and be able to withstand heavy abuse, pressure, heat and oil. AI-165 Oil leaking from a bad crankcase (main) seal When oil leaks from between your block and where your transmission meet (rear crankshaft seal ) or from behind the front crank pulley (front crankcase seal), it s a good idea to replace other things, in addition to the seals themselves, depending on which crankcase seal you are repairing. If you are replacing your rear crankcase seal, you might want to look at a clutch job. If the front crankcase seal is the one being replaced, you might want to look at other things, such as a water pump, timing belt, or related sensors, seals and pulleys on the front of your motor. Tire balance and rotation Carefully lift the vehicle on an approved automotive vehicle lift. Adjust the air pressure in all of the tires. Visually inspect the condition of the tires at this time. Remove all of the wheels and balance them on a dynamic spin balancer. Reinstall the tires on the vehicle in accordance with manufacture s rotation pattern, and then torque the wheel lugs to secure wheels to vehicle following the recommended torque procedures. Under inflated tires can rob your vehicle of its fuel economy and performance. A tire that is out of balance can cause a severe wheel vibration or shimmy. If this important step is omitted, tire wear will be uneven and you will have to replace the tires far more frequently than tires that are rotated and maintained according to a vehicle maintenance schedule. Automotive tires take a lot of punishment and require very little servicing in return. Regular tire rotation and balancing is a very cost effective preventative maintenance procedure. A new crankcase (main) seal and gasket set will stop those leaks AI-182 Irregular wear due to tire imbalance The tires on your vehicle are the only thing between you and the road surface. You have a lot "riding" on your tires in terms of safety and performance. Make tire rotations and balancing a regular part of your vehicle s scheduled maintenance program. Enjoy the benefits of a smooth ride, better handling, and improved fuel economy. Save fuel and money by keeping your tires properly balanced and rotated 12
MacPherson strut replacement Note: MacPherson Struts should always be replaced in pairs. Lift the vehicle. Remove the wheels. Remove the strut and spring assembly from the vehicle. Using a strut spring compressor, carefully compress the coil spring and disassemble the strut assembly. Remove the strut cap and bearing, and inspect them for damage or wear. If the bearing or cap is damaged or worn, it must be replaced. Remove the strut insert from the strut assembly. Install the new strut insert. Reinstall the coil spring and cap and bearing. Carefully decompress the coil spring. Install the strut and spring assembly back onto the vehicle. Reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts to the correct torque specification. Perform a complete wheel alignment. When struts wear out, your vehicle will bounce too much when going over bumps. It will also sway excessively while moving through a turn. Worn out struts can lead to serious handling problems with your vehicle, and this presents a safety issue. Your vehicle may even handle in an unpredictable manner. Worn out struts can also cause your tires to wear unevenly, greatly reducing the life of your tires. You should replace your struts before they get to this point. AI-188 Worn out MacPherson struts MacPherson struts The MacPherson strut is widely used in modern vehicles. It combines a shock absorber and a coil spring into a single unit, which provides a more compact and lighter suspension system great for front-wheel drive vehicles. Good struts will help you stay safe, ride comfortably, and prevent your tires from wearing out quickly. Belt replacement - serp, acc, fan, drive, v Loosen the drive belt tensioner and remove the old belt. Inspect the tensioner and idler pulley bearings for noise or signs of wear. Inspect tensioner and idler pulleys. Install the new belt. Start the engine, and after a minute or so, shut the engine off. Recheck the belt tension and make final adjustments as necessary. The accessory drive belts on your vehicle perform many functions. The power steering system, alternator (charging system), and AC system are all driven by accessory drive belts. On some vehicles, accessory drive belts also drive the water pump, engine cooling fan, and air injection pump (emission control). Accessory drive belts wear during normal engine operation, and need to be checked and replaced periodically; you can lose one or more systems if a belt is broken. A broken fan or waterpump belt can cause severe overheating which could result in expensive repairs, or even total engine failure. A broken power steering belt can result in the loss of your vehicle's power steering system, which could make your vehicle very difficult to steer. A broken alternator belt could cause your vehicle to lose all of its electrical power, and could eventually result in a dead battery. AI-189 Worn accessory drive belt New accessory drive belt 13
Make sure that the drive belts on your vehicle are in good condition. This is an important point to keep in mind as you attempt to keep your vehicle reliable and safe. Drive belt replacement is recommended at certain mileage intervals. This step can also save you money by avoiding possible engine damage and costly engine repairs. Oil leak repair Determine where the engine oil is leaking from. Repair the leak according to the manufacturer s service information. Top off the engine oil, and then take the vehicle for a test drive. Recheck the oil leak to verify that it has been effectively repaired. Engine oil leaks under your vehicle can indicate that a seal, gasket, or component has failed and needs to be repaired or replaced. Engine oil leaks leave a mess in your driveway, but more importantly, when they are ignored, they can lead to major engine damage. AI-216 Removing a leaking rear main seal Repairing engine oil leaks helps keep your vehicle reliable and your driveway clean. Repairing an engine oil leak can also help you avoid the expensive repairs arising from running an engine that is low on oil. Running an engine low on oil can lead to complete engine failure. Brake fluid replacement Completely purge the vehicle's brake system of all contaminated brake fluid. Clean the brake fluid reservoir of any contaminants. Replace brake fluid with new brake fluid from a sealed container. Brake fluid can become contaminated in as little as two years. This is due to the fact that brake fluid, by design absorbs the moisture that makes its way into the vehicle's hydraulic system. This moisture can greatly affect the efficiency of the brake fluid, which in turn can affect the efficiency of the braking system. Corrosion also becomes a factor and can create problems with your vehicle's anti-lock brake system (ABS) components. Corroded and damaged ABS components can be very expensive to replace. New rear main seal AI-258 Dirty brake fluid Most vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing your brake fluid every two years or 24,000 miles. Proper brake performance is essential for the safety of you and your family. Replacing your vehicles brake fluid as part of a regular vehicle maintenance schedule and will prolong the life of brake system components and ensure that your brake system works the way that it was designed to operate. Contaminated (left) and clean (right) brake fluid 14
Valve cover gasket replacement Remove valve cover bolts and valve cover. Clean out excess oil. Clean all mating surfaces. Replace valve cover gasket and inspect interior O rings. Inspect all surfaces for cracks and deterioration. Over time, the gasket that seals the valve cover to the head assembly wears and eventually fails. Typically this allows oil to leak from the valve cover, but sometimes the leak occurs in the spark plug wells. If the dipstick is reading low and there's no sign of oil smoke, you may have an oil leak. One common place for oil leaks is from where the valve cover meets the cylinder head. AI-272 Removing a valve cover to replace gasket Intake and exhaust valves open and close rapidly while the engine is running. This extreme mechanical activity requires oil for lubrication. All this happens under the valve cover. The valve cover gasket seals the oil between the engine and the valve cover. After time and many miles, the valve cover gasket can dry out and crack. When this happens, all the oil flying around inside the valve cover will escape, leaving you with an ugly oil leak. New valve cover gasket 15
