1 FLAMEPROOF STARTER MOTOR FPS75 & FPS80 PRODUCT DATA SHEET: PDS ISSUE 4 DESCRIPTION FPS75 & FPS80 starter motors are suitable for Zone 1 hazardous areas where explosive gases occur (ATEX directive 94/9/EC). The units are supplied in a robust mild steel flameproof casing. The unit includes 3m of supply cable wired through Exd glands. The units have double pole wiring which is insulated from chassis. 2 INSTALLATION AND ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS Installation should be carried out in accordance with EN or other national standards. Under no circumstances should the weight of the unit be supported by its cables. The unit is heavy (45kg), use appropriate lifting equipment. Shoulder Bolts (Ex Special) M10 for FPS75 5/8-11 UNC for FPS80 M6 Screws Fitting the Starter: The unit is fitted to the flywheel housing via the 3off shoulder bolts (M10 or 5/8-11 UNC, see above), however these are not accessible without removing the motor cover, so the following procedure should be followed: Loosen the cable glands and remove the M6 screws shown above. Slide the flameproof cover back while feeding the cable through the glands carefully. Lift the motor into place (sling and crane) and fix using the M10 or 5/8-11 UNC shoulder bolts provided. These bolts have controlled diameters that make a flameproof joint and must not be changed except for exact replacements. Pyroban does not make recommendations on starter mounting bolt torque, as the flywheel housing material may vary. Re-fit the cover taking care in feeding the cable through the glands. Re-fit the M6 screws and tighten to 12Nm Check the cover is secured fully with no flange gap by using a 0.15mm feeler gauge. Re-fit if the gauge penetrates the joint. Re-tighten the cable glands (hand tight + ½ turn). Fit the cranking warning label near the ignition key/button. Electrical Connection: The unit is provided with 3m leads. Where practical, the 35mm² power cables should be shortened to optimise cranking performance. These cables are marked + for positive and for negative and need to be connected to a suitable 24V battery supply. All the cables are to be terminated in a correctly rated enclosure with appropriate terminals. The 2 core cable only uses the brown (or no1) core as a trigger line and should be connected via a current limiting device protecting it to 26A. The blue (or no 2) line is unused and should be capped. Cables leading to the starter motor must be clamped to prevent twisting or pulling. Page2

3 Wiring Diagram: OPERATION The surface temperatures rely on limited operator cranking, hence the following instructions must be followed: If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the start button/ignition switch. Wait for two minutes in order to allow the starter motor to cool before attempting to re-start. The starter motor should not be cranked more than 6 times per 30 minutes. INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE Maintenance may not take place in a hazardous area. The starter contains no user serviceable parts. A record must be kept of all maintenance and repairs to BS EN monthly: Check for mechanical damage. Check the starter is mounted securely. Check the conditions of the leads, ensuring they are still fixed in position. Check gland tightness. Should the unit suffer impact or damage, the casing must be checked for permanent deformation. Should flameproof joints be damaged, the unit must be sent back to Pyroban for repair or replacement. Should the glands or blanking plug be damaged, they must be replaced with a suitable flameproof gland or blanking plug and the entry threads of the casing checked. A record must be kept of all maintenance and repairs to BS EN The minimum grade of the M6 cap screws in the motor casing, the M10 or 5/8-11 UNC shoulder screws and the M8 cap screws on the starter nose cone are all grade 12.9 should they need replacing.
