3 DDEC III/IV SINGLE ECM TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE 81.1 DESCRIPTION OF FLASH CODE 81 Flash Code 81 is used to identify oil level or exhaust temperature voltage high. FlashCode81isalsousedtoidentifyEGRDelta-pressurecircuithighandEGRtemperature circuit high. For all EGR related codes, always perform the basic checks in EGR-1. Refer to section for Series 50. Refer to section for Series SAE J1587 EQUIVALENT CODE FOR FLASH CODE 81 The SAE J1587 equivalent code for Flash Code 81 is p 98/3, oil level sensor input voltage high; 155 or 411/3, EGR Delta-P circuit failed high and 154 or 412/3, EGR temperature circuit failed high; p 173/3, exhaust gas temperature circuit failed high TROUBLESHOOTING FLASH CODE 81 The following procedure will troubleshoot Flash Code 81. For code s 155 or 411, refer to section ; for code s 154 or 412, refer to section For troubleshooting code 98/3, refer to section For troubleshooting code p 173/3, exhaust gas temperature circuit failed high, refer to section Check for Open Perform the following steps to check for an open. 1. Unplug the engine sensor harness 30 pin connector. 2. Unplug the EGR Delta-Pressure sensor. All information subject to change without notice. 4 81.3 TROUBLESHOOTING FLASH CODE Install a jumper wire between cavities Y2 and M2 at the EGR Delta-Pressure sensor. See Figure Figure 81-1 EGR Delta-Pressure Sensor Wiring 4. Measure resistance between P/N: , Series 60 or Series 50 cavity 1 and 2. Measure resistance between P/N: cavity 2 and 3. See Figure [a] If the resistance measurement is less than or equal to 5, Refer to section [b] If the resistance measurement is greater than 5, circuit #452 is open. Repair and verify. Refer to section Check for Short Perform the following steps to check for short: 1. Remove the jumper wire. 2. Measure resistance between P/N: or Series 50 cavity 1 and 3. Measure resistance between P/N: cavity 2 and 3. See Figure [a] If the resistance measurement is less than 1.5 k, circuit #416 is shorted to #958. Repair and verify. 5 DDEC III/IV SINGLE ECM TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE Check for Open Perform the following steps to check for an open. 1. Disconnect the EGR temperature sensor. 2. Install a jumper wire between cavities A and B. See Figure Figure 81-2 EGR Temperature Sensor Wiring 3. Disconnect the engine sensor harness 30 pin connector. 4. Measure resistance between R1 and Y2. See Figure [a] If the resistance measurement is less than or equal to 5, Refer to section [b] If the resistance measurement is greater than 5, circuit #907 or #452 is open. Repair and verify. 6 81.3 TROUBLESHOOTING FLASH CODE Check for Short Perform the following steps to check for short: 1. Remove jumper wire. 2. Measure resistance between W1 and R1. See Figure [a] If the resistance measurement is less than 1.5 k, circuit #416 is shorted to #907. Repair and verify. Refer to section [b] If the resistance measurement is greater than 1.5 k, the resistor has failed. Repair and verify. Refer to section [c] If the resistance measurement is equal to 1.5 k, replace the EGR temperature sensor Verify Repair Perform the following steps to verify repairs. 1. Connect all connectors. 2. Start and run the engine. 3. Road test the engine. [a] If code 81 was not logged, no further troubleshooting is required. [b] If code 81 was logged, please review this section from the first step to find the error. Refer to section If this is the second time through the procedure, call Detroit Diesel Technical Service, or try a test ECM. 7 DDEC III/IV SINGLE ECM TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE 81.4 TROUBLESHOOT MAINTENANCE ALERT SYSTEM The following procedures troubleshoot the Maintenance Alert System Multiple Code Check Perform the following steps to check for multiple codes: 1. Turn ignition ON. 2. Plug in DT (diagnostic tool). 3. Read active codes. 4. Turn ignition OFF. [a] If code 98/3 displays with code s 232/0, troubleshoot s 232/0 first. [b] If code 98/3 displays, refer to section Check Connectors Perform the following steps to check the connectors: 1. Unplug the oil level sensor (OLS). 2. Turn ignition ON. 3. Read codes. [a] If code 98/4 displays, check connectors for open, damage or unseated conditions. Refer to section [b] If code 98/3 displays, refer to section Sensor Check Perform the following steps to replace the sensor: 1. Replace the oil level sensor (OLS). 2. Verify the repair. 8 81.4 TROUBLESHOOT MAINTENANCE ALERT SYSTEM Check for Short Perform the following steps to check for short: 1. Measure resistance between pin B and pin C of the OLS. See Figure [a] If the reading is less than 10, cavity #416 is shorted to cavity #976. Repair the short or replace the harness and verify the repair. Insert a jumper harness between the pins A and B of the OLS connector. Measure resistance between cavity Y2 and L2. See Figure [a] If reading is greater than 10, cavity #452 is open. Repair the open or replace the harness; verify the repair. See Figure Refer to section [b] If the reading is less than 10, contact Detroit Diesel Technical Service, or try atestecm Verify Repairs Perform the following steps to verify repairs: 1. Plug in all connectors. 2. Start and run the engine for two minutes. 3. Check for codes. [a] If no codes display, the repair is complete. [b] If code 98/3 displays, troubleshooting is complete. 11 DDEC III/IV SINGLE ECM TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE Check for Open Typically, the exhaust gas temperature circuit failed high is caused by an open signal or short to battery +. Perform the following steps to troubleshoot code p 173/3: 1. Disconnect the ETS connector. 2. Install a jumper wire between the two pins at the ETS. 3. Unplug both 30 pin connectors at the ECM. 4. Measure resistance between D3 of the VIH connector and W1 of the ESH connector; see Figure [a] If resistance measures < 5, refer to section [b] If resistance is > 5, either the circuit #416 is opened, or #749 is opened. Repair the open or replace the wire and test Check for Short Perform the following steps to check for a short: 1. Remove the jumper. 2. Measure resistance again between D3 and W1; see Figure [a] If the reading is > 400, the resistor between circuit #416 and #749 has failed. Replace the resistor or replace the harness. [b] If the reading is < 400, replace the ETS, and refer to section Test Perform the following steps to test the repair: 1. Connect all removed connectors. 2. Start and run the engine. 3. Perform road test. 4. Plug in DDR and read active codes. [a] If no codes display, repairs are complete. [b] If code 81 displays, review the procedure for checking exhaust gas temperature circuit failed high; refer to section If this is the second time through the procedure, call DDC Technical Service, or try a test ECM.
