2 CHAPTER OPERATING MANUAL 2.1 OPERATING THE VTS In this chapter, we will go through operation of the VTS point by point. When appropriate, references will be made to positions in the Panel Description. Therefore, a close reading through of the Panel Description is a pre-condition of a complete understanding of this chapter. References to the Panel Description will be made as follows: 4P1 refers to position 4 on panel SAFETY MATTERS ( ) Prior to first use of the VTS, chapter 1 concerning general information and conditions for operating the VTS must be read thoroughly, in order to understand the general terms of the restrictions and safety risks that must be observed by when using the unit START UP AND DRIVING OF CHASSIS ( ) (M) IMPORTANT: In case of any alarm situation in functions arising during servicing, search for clarification of the problem in the Panel Description. NOTE: With regard to the operation of the unit, the operators must be aware that diesel engines are damaged from long periods of unloaded running. During longer pauses the unit must be turned completely off. 1. Check the oil level of the engine by means of the dip stick. 2. Moreover, check the hydraulic oil level through the inspection glass on the tank; the tank must be completely full. If mounted, the platform must be in its resting position when making the check. 3. Check the diesel oil level by means of the gauge on the dash board. The diesel oil burner, if mounted, uses diesel oil from the chassis tank; therefore, the level must be ample. 4. Start the chassis motor by means of the ignition key on the steering column. Be aware that it might be necessary to preheat in case of cold start. Also check the fluid level in the tanks. Property of American Airlines WARNING: Do not drive chassis while hydraulic system is ON - risk of damage to unit. 5. The VTS is now to be operated as any other truck chassis. 3 CHAPTER OPERATING MANUAL PREPARING FOR THE AIRCRAFT SERVICING - Before the VTS is ready for servicing of the aircraft, the gear selector must be put in park position and the parking brake must be activated. The PTO is engaged automatically when required, and the engine then automatically increases its number of revolutions to approx rpm HEATING ( ) Freeze protection of machine room during operation and on standby The VTS is equipped with a diesel heater which starts automatically when the temperature drops below 41 F. The diesel heater is located so that air is circulated in the frame to the rear end of the vehicle and along the tanks back to the machine room. By that, the whole unit is protected against frost. The heater can only run for a maximum of 8 hours, so be sure to keep batteries charged and keep the VTS in protected surroundings when temperature is below 41 F and the unit is not in use Option not chosen Option not chosen Battery charger NOTE: During periods with freezing none of the doors must be open unnecessarily, as this will cause lowering of temperature, even when the heater is in operation. The VTS is equipped with a battery charger. WARNING: Only connect the power supply when the unit is turned off (chassis is stopped). 4 CHAPTER OPERATING MANUAL PLATFORM/BASKET The VTS is equipped with a basket, mounted at the rear end of the unit. If the basket is up, the gear selector cannot be taken away from park, as the shift inhibitor is active SERVICING OF AIRCRAFT ( ) Position the chassis at the aircraft. Operate platform by means of switch (7P6) and (22P6). If necessary, de-ice aircraft hatch and couplings. Servicing of aircraft is only possible using automatic servicing, please refer to section Hydraulic system on The hydraulic system is automatically activated with use of any functions Emptying/flush of aircraft tanks 1. Start the vacuum pump on switch (3P6) and let the pump build completely up a maximum of vacuum (wait approximately 15 seconds). 2. Now open the waste valve on the aircraft and then the vacuum valve (5P6). The aircraft tanks will be emptied by means of vacuum. 3. With the vacuum pump still operating, the flush pump (1P6) can be started, in order to flush the aircraft tank thoroughly. Flushing can be made in one of two ways: Either flushing can be done as required by circumstances, or a certain amount of flushing fluid can be entered on 27P6 (if mounted), indicated on display (23P6), before starting the pump on 1P6. 4. When servicing is finished, close the waste valve on the aircraft, stop fluid pump (1P6) and vacuum pump (3P6). The vacuum valve (F27) closes automatically Filling of flushing fluid on aircraft tanks With preselection 1. Select a certain amount of fluid in advance by means of switch (27P6). Property of American Airlines The amount of preselected fluid can be read on display (23P6). Filling of fluid is to be started on switch (1P6). When finished, filling of fluid will stop automatically. 2. When the pump has stopped, couplings can be removed. Now basket (if mounted) and hose can be moved back to their resting positions. 3. The chassis is ready to drive away, and next tank or aircraft can be serviced. Without preselection 1. Start filling of fluid by means of switch (1P6). Amount of fluid and flow can be read on the display (23P6) REV: 000 ON CHAPTER 2 PAGE 3 / 20

5 CHAPTER OPERATING MANUAL 2. When filling of fluid is finished, stop filling on (1P6). 3. When the pump has stopped, couplings can be removed. Now basket (if mounted) and hose can be moved back to their resting positions. 4. The chassis is ready to drive away, and next tank or aircraft can be serviced Protection of pumps The VTS is equipped with a low-level shut-down feature which will protect the pump from running dry. In case the fluid level is too low, the pump will stop, and a low level information is displayed on 23P6. - Should this happen, fill the empty tank to put the pump back in operation Bleeding of pump ( ) After maintenance the pump will be bled automatically during startup. - Check that pressure builds up within a few seconds IMMOBILIZING SYSTEM ( ) (M) Option not chosen Immobilizer - antennas touching aircraft The basket is prevented from raising (up movement disabled) if the antennas are activated. This is to prevent the VTS from causing damage when approaching the aircraft. When the VTS is reversing, an acoustic alarm will sound in the chassis cabin if the antennas are touched. CAUTION: Braking of objects does not take place instantly, but will depend on the weight and the speed of the object. Therefore, be aware that there is a certain stopping time for the basket before the movement comes to a halt after the antennas are activated. Consequently, activation of antennas may not prevent objects from being damaged, but only serve to reduce the damage. Property of American Airlines CHAPTER 2 ON PAGE 4 / REV: 000

6 CHAPTER OPERATING MANUAL EMPTYING OF WASTE TANK Open system 1. Position the chassis over the drain well. 2. Open the drain valve by means of the two switches (1P4 and 4P4) simultaneously. 3. During emptying of waste tanks, the tank is automatically flushed with water from the water tank. Flushing sequence starts 30 sec. after the waste volume goes below 200 l. The flushing continues for 60 sec. 4. Close the waste valve by means of on-off switch (2P4). Flushing stops automatically when valve is closed. In case waste substances accumulate around the waste valve, wash away these while draining of the waste tank takes place. 5. When emptying is completed, open manhole cover (F40) and check the vacuum outlet valve system. Rinse it with water if necessary. Closed system IMPORTANT: The manhole cover (F40) must remain closed during emptying of waste tanks to avoid splashing of water on people nearby and/or on vehicle. NOTE: To operate the dump valve the parking brake must be activated, the gear selector must be in park. NOTE: When the dump valve is open, the gear selector cannot be moved from park, inhibitor active. WARNING: Take precautions for personal safety against falling if using a ladder. 1. Position the chassis close to the drain station and connect drain hose to coupling F Open the drain valve by means of the two switches (1P4 and 4P4) simultaneously. 3. During emptying of waste tanks, the tank is automatically flushed with water from the water tank. Flushing sequence starts 30 sec. after the waste volume goes below 200 l. The flushing continues for 60 sec. 7 CHAPTER OPERATING MANUAL 4. Close the waste valve by means of on-off switch (2P4). Flushing stops automatically when valve is closed. In case waste substances accumulate around the waste valve, wash away these while draining of the waste tank takes place. NOTE: To operate the dump valve the parking brake must be activated, the gear selector must be in park. NOTE: When the dump valve is open, the gear selector cannot be moved from park, inhibitor active. 5. When emptying is completed, open manhole cover (F40) and check the vacuum outlet valve system. Rinse it with water if necessary. WARNING: Take precautions for personal safety against falling if using a ladder HALT OF CHASSIS ( ) The hydraulic system stops automatically. The chassis itself can be stopped by turning the key EMERGENCY MANOEUVRING OF BASKET The basket can be emergency lowered by activating emergency pump by pressing the down switch (8P6) - this requires that electrical power supply is available; by pulling the wire located on the elevating system between the rear end of the vehicle and the basket FILLING OF FLUID Filling of fluid takes place through the manhole on top of the tanks, or (if mounted) through the filling coupling. To avoid overfilling/overflow, do not forget to keep an eye on the fluid level in the tank when filling in fluid. Property of American Airlines EMERGENCY STOP In case of an emergency, push emergency stop (6P6). By that all movements are frozen and the situation can be settled. To reset emergency stop: 1. Turn the chassis off and on again. 2. Turn the emergency stop and resume operation. CHAPTER 2 ON PAGE 6 / REV: 000

8 CHAPTER OPERATING MANUAL CLEANING To promote convenient and easy use of the VTS by the operator, and with view to authorised maintenance staff work, the unit must be kept clean and tidy, inside as well as outside. Cleaning also reduces the risk of infection from waste in the aircraft tanks. Flush the vacuum pump once every working day: 1. Place outlet from vacuum pump over drain before starting to flush. 2. Disconnect suction hose from coupling heater to ensure sufficient airflow to vacuum blower. 3. Start flushing of the pump by pressing switch (3P4) located on panel in the machine room. The flushing is PLC-controlled and will be made automatically. Flushing stops after approx. 4 min. 4. Reconnect suction hose to coupling heater when flushing has stopped 2.2 AUTOMATIC SERVICING, GENERAL COMMENTS ( ) Servicing of aircraft is only possible using the automatic servicing feature P6 OPERATOR PANEL ( ) (M) The P6 operator panel is equipped with a display with a conventional non-touch screen by which the actual servicing of the aircraft is done AUTOMATIC SERVICING ( ) (M) IMPORTANT: To maintain steady operation and long life-time, the valve in top of the vacuum tank must be cleaned daily. Open the manhole cover and check, and if required, clean, the valve which is mounted on the inside of the cover. IMPORTANT: Empty waste tank before flushing starts.
