AS-4000 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS (PS-5000) BASIC OPERATIONS This unit is a state-of-the-art combination of a vehicle alarm and remote starter system. Start by familiarizing yourself with the alarm functions of the unit which you need to operate first, before using the remote starter functions. This is especially recommended if your unit is set in Passive Arming Mode which automatically controls the arming of your vehicle. Basically, the remote control unit has 3 channels using two buttons. Button I is used to arm and disarm the alarm system and to operate the door locks (if that option was Installed) and Button II is used for remote engine start. Buttons 1 & 2 control chirp delete or trunk. ALARM FUNCTIONS Your installer can program your alarm/remote starter in Passive Arming Mode, so that the system automatically arms itself when you leave your vehicle, or in Active Arming Mode, so that you can arm or disarm your car at will. In either mode, you can arm or disarm your alarm system using your remote control and if your system was installed with remote door locks, you can lock or unlock your doors at the same time. NOTE: The alarm functions can be used and are active in the same way whether the engine is running under the remote or not. In other words, your vehicle benefits from high security protection at all times. ARMING AND LOCKING DOORS PASSIVE ARM MODE In Passive Arming Mode, the system will arm itself automatically after the completion of a 35 second arming delay (LED flashes quickly) initiated after the last door of the vehicle is closed. Therefore, you do not need to arm the system. The LED indicator flashes slowly when the system is armed. However, you must lock your doors manually when leaving the vehicle. When leaving your vehicle, perform the following: 1. Turn the Key switch OFF. The LED remains OFF. 2. Unlock if required and open the doors. 3. Once all doors are closed after exiting the vehicle, the LED will begin to flash quickly, indicating that passive arming has begun. Also, as long as a door is opened or if a door is opened and remains open before the completion of the arming delay the system will not arm. If you want to stay in the vehicle for a certain period of time, it is recommended to have your key switch in the ON position to avoid a situation were the system arms after somebody leaves the vehicle. While your key is in the ON position, the system will not arm and the LED stays OFF. ACTIVE ARM MODE To arm the system, and lock your doors (if you have this option), press Button I on your remote until the siren chirps once in confirmation. Notice that the parking lights confirm the system arming by flashing once and that the LED indicator flashes slowly to confirm the armed state. (See Chirp delete to bypass the chirping effect). DISARMING AND UNLOCKING DOORS PASSIVE ARM MODE If the system was programmed in Passive Mode, to disarm the system and unlock the doors, press and hold Button I until the siren chirps twice in confirmation. Notice also that the parking lights confirm the system disarming by flashing twice. Once the system is disarmed, you have to open a door within a 35 seconds delay or else the system will rearm (LED flashing slowly) and you set off an alarm. If the entry delay expires, you should disarm the vehicle by pressing Button I to enter the vehicle. Once inside the vehicle, you have up to 35 seconds to turn the key switch to the ON position or start the car to prevent the system from re-arming again. If this is not done, your system will re-arm (LED flashing slowly) and if your system has a starter kill, you will not be able to start the car. If this situation occurs, you need to disarm the car with Button I. IMPORTANT NOTE: If your car is not equipped with a starter kill, You should not start the vehicle if the car is armed because you may cause a false alarm. ACTIVE ARM MODE In Active Arming Mode, to disarm the system, unlock the doors and deactivate the starter kill if installed, press and hold Button I until the siren chirps twice in confirmation. Notice also that the parking lights confirms the system disarming by flashing twice. Finally, note that if an alarm condition occurs and the siren is on, disarming the system will end the alarm condition. Page 1

PANIC MODE In a panic situation, you can activate the panic mode which disables the valet mode, shuts down the engine, unlocks the doors, disarms the starter kill and sounds the siren for 1 minute. You can activate the panic mode by pressing Button I for approximately 4 seconds until the siren goes ON and the parking light flash. TEMPORARY CHIRP DELETE If you want to avoid the siren chirps in a quiet neighborhood when arming or disarming the system, press Buttons I & II simultaneously until you see a parking lights flash. Then Within 3 seconds, press Button I to arm or disarm the vehicle without generating the siren chirps. Note that your installer could program the Chirp disable feature, so that you could disable the chirps permanently. Note that chirps will still occur when arming and a zone is unprotected or when disarming and an entry was attempted. REMOTE START Whether the system is armed or not, you can start the vehicle by remote. In order to do so, you must ensure that the hood is closed, the key is not in the ignition and that the brakes aren't pressed. Press and hold Button II for about a second until the parking lights come on to inform you that the unit has recognized your remote. Once the lights come on, release the button on the remote. Your vehicle will now start. NOTE: Do not continue to press the remote once the parking lights activate. Pressing the remote Continuously for 4 seconds will activate the "Cold Weather" mode and will not start the engine. If the car doesn't start, the unit will shut off, wait a few seconds, then try to start the engine again. The unit will try to start the engine a total of two, three or four times (programmable) before giving up. When the engine starts, the parking lights will stay on for the run time duration of 5, 15 or 25 minutes programmable). If the engine stalls, the unit will try to start the engine again (maximum of 2, 3 or 4 attempts). NOTE: Make sure that you have the heater or air conditioner turned on before leaving your vehicle. The unit will warm or cool your car when starting by remote control. If the vehicle was armed, remember to disarm the system and unlock the doors with Button 1, before entering the vehicle. DRIVING-OFF After having disarmed the system and unlocked the doors, enter the vehicle and do the following: 1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. (Do not turn it to the start position, since the engine is already running.) 2. Press the brakes to disengage the remote starter unit. You are now ready to drive off. REMOTE TRUNK RELEASE If your unit was installed with the trunk release option, you can open the trunk using your remote. This is especially handy when you carry packages and need to open the trunk. Press and hold Buttons I & II together until the parking lights flash once. To open the trunk, you then press Buttons I & II in the same manner within 3 seconds until you see the parking lights flash again. You can also press Buttons I & II continuously for 3 seconds to accomplish the same task. The parking lights stay ON while you press Buttons I & II. Page 2

INSTALLATION MANUAL MAJOR FEATURES - Instant remote detection - Programmable passive or active arming - Brake, hood, doors, shock sensor and ignition monitoring - Starter kill option - Negative and positive door locks triggering - Arming/disarming chirp control - Ignition disables remote start - Engine sensor monitoring - Automatic Tach Search & Setting - Tach/Vacuum Watch Lockout - Diesel engine option - V.A.T.S. bypass - Customized operations - Programmable cold weather operation INSTALLATION Here are the essential hardware components and wiring that must be installed in order to use the alarm/starter system. Note that detailed wiring information and some optional hardware components or wiring, which are trunk release, ground output, shock sensor and starter kill, are discussed in Appendix B (Harness Description). IMPORTANT: Do not apply power to the module in the initial stage of the install. Wait until you get to the Powering-up the alarm/starter section to proceed. HOOD SWITCH - When installing the hood switch inside the engine compartment, the switch's contact must be closed when the hood is opened to feed a ground. The switch is open when the hood is closed. The body of the hood switch must be properly grounded. ALARM VALET SWITCH - The alarm valet switch should be located in an area which allows easy access to the user but difficult to find by a potential thief. The use of this switch has improved security features in that it operates on transitions in conjunction with other inputs and not solely on the state of the switch contact. The valet switch must feed a ground to the module when it is in the ON position. IMPORTANT: This switch must be installed in order to make programming accessible and easy to use. It is used in the process of programming new transmitters, to enable or disable the Alarm Valet Mode and to reset the alarm/starter system to factory default. DOOR STATUS SENSING - To sense the door opened or closed state, connect the positive door sense input to the dome light circuit that gives 12V when a door is opened or connect the negative door sense input to the dome light circuit that gives a ground when a door is opened. Only one of these inputs must be used depending of the vehicle you work with. BRAKE LINE - Connect the brake line wire to the side of the brake switch that output 12V when the brake pedal is pressed. SIREN - Mount the siren in the engine compartment so that it is hard to reach by a potential thief and so that water can't accumulate inside the siren. Connect the siren output that will supply 12V to the siren. You may leave this connection open during initial powerup of the system not to be disturbed by the siren. LED - Use a standard non-flashing LED to mount on the dashboard and connect it's cathode (negative side) to the LED output of the module and it's anode (positive) side to 12V. IMPORTANT: This unit will not operate properly if a BUILT-IN FLASHING LED is used. PARKING LIGHTS - Connect the module parking lights output to the parking light or switch wire that has 12V when the parking lights are ON. TACH OR VACUUM - This wire has to be connected to the negative side of the coil or tach wire of the electronic distributor. POWER - STARTER - ACCESSORIES - IGNITION - Connect each of these four heavy gage wire to their proper location as per the schematic and Harness Description. ANTENNAE - Stick the supplied antennae on the inside top part of the windshield behind the rear view mirror and connect it to the module. In some cases, for remote range considerations, you may need to locate the antennae on the rear view window. Once the harness has been installed and soldered, the voltages and signals at the connector should be verified before plugging in the alarm/starter module. NOTES Some vehicles may have 2 ignition wires which must be powered up for the engine to start and/or run properly under remote start. Other vehicles may have 2 accessory wires which must be powered in order to turn on the blower fan. POWERING-UP THE ALARM/STARTER Once the wiring is complete, you can now initialize the system. As a security measure, when power is applied to the alarm/starter module, the system goes in a power-up alarm condition. In that state, if the installation is correct, the parking lights will flash and the siren will sound for one minute or until the Alarm Valet Mode is enabled. NOTE: To avoid being disturbed by the siren you may disconnect it until you get familiar with the Alarm Valet Mode procedure. Page 4

REMOTE STARTER VALET AND ALARM VALET MODES The alarm/starter unit can be placed in Remote Starter Valet Mode to disable the capability of starting the engine by the unit while maintaining the alarm and door locking/unlocking functions. This is recommended if the vehicle is to be parked in a garage or if the vehicle needs to be serviced. The alarm/starter unit can also be switched to Alarm Valet Mode to stop an alarm condition or to disable the alarm functions and the anti-theft starter kill feature. While in the Alarm Valet Mode, the remote starting capability, the panic mode and door locking/unlocking functions are still operational. NOTE: Enabling Alarm Valet Mode is required if you want to stop the initial alarm condition that occurs when powering-up the system. Using one of the next options will permit the user to place the alarm/starter in any one of the following combinations using the single valet switch: Normal operation Alarm valet mode only Starter valet mode only Alarm and starter valet modes ENABLING ALARM VALET MODE 1. Make sure the ignition key is in the OFF position 2. Set the valet switch to OFF 3. Turn ignition ON 4. Set the valet switch to ON. At this point the LED turns and stays ON to indicate that the Alarm Valet Mode is enabled 5. Set the valet switch and ignition OFF DISABLING ALARM VALET MODE 1. Make sure the ignition key is in the OFF position 2. Set the alarm valet switch to ON 3. Turn ignition ON 4. Set the alarm valet switch to OFF. At this point the LED turns and stays OFF to indicate that the Alarm Valet Mode is disabled. 5. Turn ignition OFF ENABLING STARTER VALET MODE 1. Make sure you did set the alarm valet mode as you require. 2. Set the valet switch ON DISABLING STARTER VALET MODE 1. Make sure you did set the alarm valet mode as you require 2. Set the valet switch OFF The remote starter is now in normal operation PROGRAMMING TRANSMITTERS To use the transmitter with your alarm/starter system, you must first have the system learn the transmitter's code. The system can learn a total of 4 transmitters. If more than 4 transmitters are programmed, the oldest codes will be replaced. (The same transmitter can be coded 4 times to lock out all other transmitters.) NOTE: In order to program a new transmitter code, Alarm Valet Mode must be disabled. Also, when programming the transmitter, make sure that no other transmitter is in use or the alarm/starter unit may learn it. 1. Make sure that the Alarm Valet Mode is disabled. 2. Make sure the doors are closed 3. Turn the ignition switch to ON 4. Open the hood 5. Turn the Valet switch ON, OFF, ON 6. The parking lights will come ON. You have up to 5 seconds to press Button I on the transmitter to be added to the unit If the operation is successful, the alarm/starter unit will flash the parking lights 5 times quickly. Note that the Alarm Valet Mode is enabled at the end of this procedure. You should disable it to return to normal operation. If the code could not be read by the unit, repeat the operation from step 1. If you cannot program the unit after several tries, there may be a problem with the transmitter or remote starter unit. AUTOMATIC TACH SEARCH & SETTING NOTE: Some vehicles automatically turn the parking lights ON whenever the ignition is turned ON. This will prevent you from getting light confirmation or diagnostics. To circumvent this problem, cut the lights wire and attach a test light to the end connected to the starter unit. Re-attach the lights wire when installation is complete. IMPORTANT: This unit relies on relative tach pulses instead of absolute cylinder settings. For this reason, we strongly urge you to use the tach learning steps outlined below and to use the adjustments when necessary. This remote starter system will help you locate the correct tach wire and learn its optimum setting. 1. Open the hood and hold the hood switch down for about 4 seconds. Release the hood switch, then once the lights come on, press and release the switch once more. The lights should stay on for up to 20 seconds. 2. Press and hold the transmitter Buttons I and ll together for about a second. The parking lights should flash from 1 to 7 times. (Eight flashes indicate vacuum mode.) 3. Start the vehicle manually using the key, then let the engine idle to a normal speed. 4. If you have the correct tach wire, the lights will go out once the engine starts. If the lights stay on or flicker on and off, you may need to find a better tach wire. 5. Press and hold the brakes until the lights go on. Once the lights go on, release the brakes and Page 5

count the number of flashes from the parking lights. If it gives a flash count of 8, you may have the wrong tach wire. 6. To save the tach setting, press and hold Buttons I and II on the remote until you get a single long flash from the lights. 7. To cancel the setting, press on the hood switch instead. 8. Turn the engine off, close the hood and try to start the vehicle by remote control. If the engine seems to overcrank or undercrank, follow the tach adjustment steps which follow. TACH ADJUSTMENT If engine overcranks or undercranks, follow the steps outlined below: 1. Open the hood and hold the hood switch down for about 4 seconds. Release the hood switch and once the lights come on, press and release the switch once more. The lights should stay on for up to 20 seconds. 2. Press and hold transmitter Buttons I and II together for about a second. The parking lights should flash from 1 to 7 times. (Eight flashes indicates Vacuum Mode.) 3. If the engine overcranks press Button I. The setting will decrease by 1 and the lights will flash the new setting. 4. If the engine undercranks press Button II. The setting will increase by 1 and the lights will flash the new setting. NOTE: In Tach Mode, the lights should only flash from one to seven times. (Eight flashes indicate Vacuum Mode.) 5. To save the new setting press and hold Buttons I and II on the remote until the parking lights flash once slowly. 6. To cancel the new setting press on the hood switch instead. RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULT This option allows the alarm/remote starter to be reset to its factory default settings. NOTE: Using this option erases all transmitter codes. You will have to reprogram the transmitters into the unit. MODE 1 DEFAULTS - Ignition lock enabled - Arming/disarming chirp enabled - Passive arming - A single 3/4 second door lock/unlock pulse MODE 2 DEFAULTS - 15 minutes run time - 3 crank cycles - 8 seconds crank time - Gasoline engine To reset the unit, follow the steps below: 1.
