6 GLOBAL LEADERSHIP THE STORY SO FAR Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd is now the world's largest tractor company by volumes with a global sale in excess of 160,000 tractors annually. With a presence in more than 40 countries and a network of over 1000 dealers, Mahindra has sold well over 1.6 mn tractors world-wide. India is the world's largest tractor market and Mahindra has been its leader for almost 3 decades now. With a market share in excess of 40%, Mahindra has been clearly dominating the Indian tractor space. In 1963, International Tractor Company was established as a joint venture with International harvester between Mahindra & Mahindra and International Harvester Company. Mahindra acquired this business in 1977 and Mahindra Tractors came into being. In 1994, Mahindra USA Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mahindra, was established for the distribution of agricultural tractors in the USA. The company reached the milestone figure in a million tractors sold world-wide. In by now in an expansion mode - the company acquired the tractor manufacturing assets of Jiangling Tractors Company, and formed the Mahindra (China) Tractor Company. In 2008, it acquired Punjab Tractors Limited, another major tractor company in India. In a further consolidation move in the Chinese market, in 2008 Mahindra formed it second JV in China with Jiangsu Yueda Yancheng Tractor Manufacturing Co. named as Mahindra Yueda Yancheng Tractor Manufacturing Company (MYYTCL). 7 CUTTING EDGE INFRASTRUCTURE FOCUS ON QUALITY Mahindra has four world-class manufacturing facilities in India. Its Mumbai plant is the world's single largest tractor manufacturing facility, under one roof, with a capacity to manufacture 250 tractors per day. Mahindra employs a fully automated engine assembly plant. Ensuring a dust-proof environment that is Moisture and Temperature controlled, this facility is equipped with an Online Cold Testing Facility.
