8 PTO Shafts PTO Shafts - Identification of your PTO requirements The fi rst and most important information needed in identifying your PTO requirements is the size of the Cross / Universal Joint. That is; the diameter of the caps & the width of the cross. This determines the strength of your requirements. The rest can be identifi ed by measuring the closed length of your shaft or guard, the quick release yokes (number & size of the splines) or inboard yokes profi le tubing. If a clutch is needed please contact our sales staff who will be happy to help you with any of your requirements. 18 PTO Guards Walterscheid PTO Guards - S and SF Type The different safety requirements imposed on PTO Guards are met by Walterscheid s unit construction system involving SC & S guard designs. The S design of PTO guard meets the requirements in ISO 5674 and also the future EU requirements. The PTO drive shaft guard, fi tted with standard cones, is supplied in graded length. Guard tubes and guard cones may only be shortened in a way that rotating components are protected and that suffi cient overlap with the safety devices at the tractor and implement ends are provided. Overload & Overrunning Clutches Owing to the different power requirements of agricultural machines and the high kinetic energy, particularly generated by the fl ywheel mass of the tractor engine, the need arises to protect the working elements by overload and overrunning clutches. Overloading clutches protect both tractor and implement against overload conditions created by initial starting torque, excessive charging and blocking. Overrunning clutches protect the tractor and implement against the effects of rotating masses.
