The installation standard IEC stipulates: Article : additional cable entries can be installed in the enclosures in accordance with the manufacturer documentation that so allows. Article 15.1: maximum dissipated power of the terminal boxes to comply with the temperature class. It can be reached by complying with either: - Point d: the number of authorized terminals, conductor cross-section and maximum current supplied by the manufacturer, or - Point e: the calculation parameters supplied by the manufacturer. The calculated value must be lower than nominal maximum dissipated power.

7 STEP 1: GENERAL INFORMATION To make your choice easy, Appleton/ATX suggests a method that takes all parameters into account, including connecting cross-sections, current carrying capacity of terminals, the number of cable entries, and the requirements of European standards. To determine the useful height of the enclosure, a minimum distance has to be maintained between the inside surface of the enclosure and the connection point of the terminals so that conductors with comply with the specified bending radii. The tables below show the minimum distances to be maintained as a function of connection cross-sections. Values of B1 can be less than B2 because the wires can be routed in three dimensions (conductor can be passed under the rails). Dimension C should be used when cable entries are located in the lower part of the enclosure. For applications where cross-through wiring is employed, the value of C should be equal to A. 8 STEP 1: GENERAL INFORMATION INTRINSIC SAFETY [IS] Intrinsic safety is a protection technique for safe operation of electrical equipment in hazardous areas by limiting the energy available for ignition. Intrinsically safe enclosures require a minimum of IP20 protection. Rules for combining IS terminals with e terminals: a) Terminal Color When there is a risk of confusion between several types of terminals inside the enclosure, IS terminals must be identified with a light blue color. Terminals that conform to EN/IEC can be used for IS circuits connection b) Clearance Distances Clearance distances between IS and NIS (non-intrinsically safe) terminals. X = the partition. If the partition is metallic, it must be grounded/earthed. These [IS] components are associated materials that cannot be installed in Ex eb enclosures. However, they can be installed in flameproof enclosures. Rules for Combining IS Terminals With e Terminals: In order to satisfy the requirements of European standards EN/IEC and EN/IEC , Ex eb IIC enclosures should be used to comply with the maximum certified dissipation power (Pw) of respective enclosures. The dissipated power of the enclosure is calculated by: 1. A given temperature class 2. Maximum allowable number of terminals per each enclosure 3. Number of cross-connections 4. Current carrying capacity of each circuit 5. Dissipated power of internal wiring ATEX certified terminals from different manufacturers can be used, provided electrical data (rated voltage and current) is within conformance. 6

24 STEP 8: ENSURE APPLETON/ATX REQUIREMENTS Appleton/ATX s requirements to ensure the IP Rating of your enclosure. DRILLING AND MACHINING CAUTION! Code does not permit an enclosure to have tapped holes and an earthing plate on a single enclosure in the same location. CAUTION! Cable entry sizes M40 and larger must be fastened to the enclosure using a clearance hole and locknut. Earthing plate performs three functions: 1. Provides earth continuity. 2. When used with armored cable, it provides proper grounding for the cable armor. 3. Mechanically holds the cable glands in position. Equip polyester enclosures with an earthing plate for electrical continuity of cable armor. Depending on the thickness of the earthing plate, you can make a combination of clearance holes and/or tapped holes in the earthing plate. Cable entries must be drilled perpendicular to the surface of the enclosure to prevent bending and stressing of the enclosure walls.
