In the last couple of decades the Várpalota Coal Mines and its successor have built up such a design and production capacity, which was more than enough to produce shield types suiting the various needs of the Hungarian mining industry as well as the highly developed technical conditions of foreign mining. The professionals working on the design and production of shields have gained significant recognition and distinction for our company on the nationaland international level. Our company, the Weldminker Group (Weldminker Works Private Co. and Welminker VHP-512 shield Ltd.) works on producing metal structures (special custom machines, steel structures, accessories for mining and agricultural machines and metal tanks). Thanks to the high level expertise and technical experience of our shield designers, besides the general, we are able to provide solutions for special conditions and cases. For example, the shield for coal caving is suggested to be used in case of varying coal seam thickness, while our specially designed shield types should be usedin crossing of drifts. 4 VHP-WMK-101 TYPE AUTOMOTIVE HYDRAULIC SHIELD FIELD OF APPLICATION It is designed for supporting the caving of medium thick coal seams with horizontal or low-angle dip (max ). The structure and operation of the shield enables the application of a rack motion bucket wheel longwall shearing machine. The length of the caving is determined by the whole work system, the rock mechanics and the capacity of the conveying machinery used in caving. The cradle system enables the configuration where the shoe stretches underneath the conveying machinery. With it, the length of the conveying machinery can be extended, this way increasing the shield surface and as a consequence decreasing the pressure on the floor. Therefore, the application of the device becomes possible even in the case of floors with smaller strength. The device is suitable for caving m high coal seams with a bucket wheel longwall shearing machine. If the coal seam is thicker or its height varies, than the top coal can be recovered though the hatch on the back of the shield operated by hydraulic cylinders. If it is hard to cave in the top coal, blasting can be used to ignite the process. If the top coal contains dirt bands and it appears at the hatch, it is always an option to close it, this way ameliorating the quality of the coal. The device enables the application of driving shields in the crossings of the haulage ways and the airways STRUCTURAL SET-UP Cradle shaped lemniscate support system. On the top of the road head, the catch device operated by a hydraulic cylinder blocks the coalface from tilting outwards. Its peculiarity is that it is located together with the hatch - operated by hydraulic cylinders - on the back of the shield, through which the coal above the top can be glided into the face conveying machinery. The device is made by welded high-strength steel sheets to decrease the dead load. The mechanic structural units are rivet joined welded box frame parts. The strength and operation of the device is provided by a bar hydraulic system. Being equipped with such a device at the face, the safety of the personnel is ensured by the following: Travelling compartment with appropriate width behind the props Head catch device, operated by a hydraulic cylinder, blocking the coal face from tilting outwards Possible operation from the neighboring shield Dead man actuator valves

10 Development of shield production in Várpalota The first tests and development steps using operational hydraulic armoured shields in the Várpalota Basin began in Throughout the continuous development, after coming up with the Ursitz, Várpalota, BKI, OBV types, the so called Hungarian type of shield was developed with its cradle support system and circular support racks. Based on operational experience, the shields were frequently modified. The newly developed parts were installed for testing, and if they worked fine and met the predefined needs, their in line production began. Modifications were made such as: forcing the cradle, shoe extension, top modification, new face support, ball joint driving wedge installation, installation of complete hydraulic units (aggregates) and cylinders to each and every shield, shield back extension, fix point back prop modification, prop system replacement, central pump installation along with the appropriate cables and actuator valves and a proper cradle system. Based on tests, a suitable slit blocking system had to be developed in multiple versions. Many extensive tests were done to prevent coal face tilting outwards. The obtained support system was the one considered to be eligible for in line production. The couple of shields produced were applied successfully in the Hungarian mines of Várpalota, Borsod, Ózd and Oroszlány. The demand for the products continuously increased, thus the financial and technical background for high number in line roduction had to be provided from own resources. As a result of the efforts put into Hungarian shield support engineering, more than 50 constructions came off the drawing board and were manufactured. Most of these were put into operation in Hungarian and foreign mining companies. What more can prove the construction s capability for field application than the fact that within the frames of the collaboration with the German Klöckner Ferromatik mining machine manufacturing company, a shielded support system equipped with 2x600kN

11 circular support racks was shippedin 1970 for the German coal mining industry. Due to the good experiences with the support system, it became internationally known as the Hungarian shield. Between 1970 and 1977 more than 3,100 shield units were exported from the Factory of the Várpalota Coal Mines. This amount was enough to provide about 4,000m of face support. The hydraulic units for the shields were manufactured and shipped by the Klöckner Ferromatik company. The Vhp 730 type of top coal caving shield was designed based on the national and international experiences on top coal caving machinery, and the further development of the related technologies. The Várpalota Factory has signed an extensive collaboration in design, production and marketing with the German Klöckner Becorit and Thyssen Bergbautechnik, and the British Dowty Mining companies. As a result, the Várpalota Factory together with Thyssen has manufactured and shipped 27 shield units to Yugoslavia, to the Dobrnaja Lukovac Coal Mines in The unit was operating in Hungary (Dorog) from 1986, China (1987) and in South Korea as well. With the continuous increase in orders from abroad and the continuous development, the production of new type of shields began. As a direct consequence, the quality of the products increased and the shipping time was reduced. Furthermore, to ensure technological discipline, it necessary to introduce a quality control system which is independent from the production, where the foreign procurer s inspectors were present as well. Meeting the export demands was only possible by increasing the technical standards. At this 50 year distance of time, in can be said that with the close co operation of the experimental, production and design units, it became possible to create such a reliable automotive head support system in Hungary, which was able to provide the technical background for complexly mechanized mass producing active faces.
