5 Product Information 1 Function and characteristics As they are so simple to integrate and need no maintenance, HYDAC's HEZ electric cylinders make the implementation of linear movements really easy. In an HEZ unit, the rotation of its electric motor is converted into a linear movement using a screw drive. The gearing and the drive can be selected to produce various positioning forces, speeds and duty cycles. Just as for the KineSys variable speed drive for hydraulic systems, various types of drive can be selected here, from a simple drive to a high precision positioning drive. Electric cylinders are available in a range of designs and customised units are also possible. The different design types have different connections for the electric motor, offering diverse installation variants. 6 2 Functional description of an HEZ unit Via a coupling, a geared motor drives the threaded spindle, which is fixed in the bearing housing via a ball bearing. A threaded nut converts the threaded spindle's rotation into a linear movement. The threaded nut is connected to the piston rod via the nut housing. The piston rod passes through a sealing ring and a plain bearing. The plain bearing prevents the nut housing from twisting. To fasten the unit, there is a pivot bracket on the bearing housing and a rod end bearing on the piston rod. 2.1 The assembly 4

7 2.2 Variants HEZ units are available in three versions. These versions differ in the way that the drive is attached to the HEZ unit. HEZ version L The drive is mounted at a right angle to the electric cylinder. HEZ version I The drive is mounted in line with the electric cylinder. HEZ version U The drive is mounted in parallel to the electric cylinder. 5

8 2.3 Types of thread Depending on the conditions of use, either a ball screw drive or a trapezoidal thread drive can be used. Ball screw drive Ball screw drives should be used for the following requirements: high positioning speed (>50 mm/s) high duty cycle (>50%) high efficiency required (>85%) very dynamic applications positioning accuracy ± 0.05 mm The ball screw drive of the HEZ electric cylinder has no self-locking. For this reason, the cylinder is delivered with a motor brake. Trapezoidal thread drive Trapezoidal thread drives should be used for the following requirements: low positioning speeds low duty cycle impact load cost-effective applications positioning accuracy ± 0.1 mm Cylinder limit The cylinders are not automatically limited. For this reason, their limits should be monitored. Limit switches can be fixed to the HEZ unit as an option. 6

9 3 Special versions As well as our standard range of cylinders, we can also deliver all HEZ units in special versions for specific applications with custom stroke lengths, forces and speeds. Amongst other options, versions are possible with steel or stainless steel tubes as well as using servo drive equipment. Possible areas of application include: conveying equipment, steel hydraulic engineering, material handling, damper and valve actuators. 14 axial force [kn] 5 Load-dependent service life 5.1 Service life of ball screws To ensure an adequate service life of the electric cylinder, the required operating path should be calculated. This path is the axial distance that the piston rod moves. For a precise setup, the load profile, maximum load, stroke, positioning speed and the number of load cycles are required. The diagram can be used to estimate which cylinder is needed. If the intersection of the required operating path and the mean average of the amounts for the individual loads is underneath the two curves, the service life is ensured and the cylinder has been chosen correctly. The standard cylinders are divided into two categories on the basis of the operating path. Wear occurs when the setup criteria are exceeded. When trapezoidal thread drives have been in service for a prolonged time, their efficiency increases. This increase can result in a loss of self-locking. 12

15 6 Control To control the HEZ electric cylinders, there are several variants to choose from. The configuration is chosen on the basis of the particular application. We will be happy to help you select the most suitable drive concept. 6.1 Reversing contactor control B1 B2 HEZ L1 L2 S1 L3 Q1 S2 S3 Q2 Q1 Q2 Q2 B1 Q1 B2 M 3~ Q1 Q2 The HEZ electric cylinders can be connected to the mains supply by means of a reversing contactor and then moved at a consistent speed. The direction of rotation for retracting and extending the cylinder is altered by means of the reversing contactor control shown. The contactor changes two phases of the motor when it is switched. The auxiliary contactor circuit shown enables the required limit switches to be incorporated. 13

16 6.2 Operation with decentralized HYDAC surface-mounted frequency inverters (HFI-MM) To allow a variable feed rate to be realised with an HEZ, the asynchronous motor can be operated with a frequency inverter. The HFI-MM can be used for this purpose. The frequency inverter is mounted directly onto the motor, requiring no extra space in the switch cabinet. The target values are specified via digital inputs (fixed frequency), analogue inputs or bus systems. A controller integrated into the frequency inverter allows the cylinder's sequence of movements to be controlled. As an option, position regulation can be realised via an analogue position sensor system attached to the cylinder. Speed profiles can also be provided in this way, with no additional effort. 6.3 Position-regulated operation with HYDAC switch cabinet frequency inverter (HFI-CM) High positioning accuracy can be achieved with an HFI-CM. This requires the use of incremental encoders. The encoders can be rotational and thus attached to the motor shaft or measure the stroke directly. If high dynamics are required in addition to high positioning accuracy, HSM servo motors can be used in conjunction with the corresponding HFI-CM. In addition to single-axis applications, multiple-axis solutions in the master-slave network can be realised in this configuration. 14

22 8 Application example Example: cover lifting device An electric cylinder is used to lift and hold a cover weighing 910 kg. The cover is to be opened and closed in jog mode. When the set end position is reached, the cylinder should stop automatically.
