Costl dunes form the first line of defence for the communities behind them, plying vitl role in protecting costl res from erosion, costl flooding nd storm dmge, s well s sheltering costl infrstructure from wind nd se spry. Snd dunes re lso the nturl hbitts of highly dpted nimls s well s mny very specilised plnts tht help to stbilise the dunes. Given this frgile nd nrrow strip of protection long our costs, dune revegettion nd protection is vitl to the ecosystems under thret of erosion nd for the defence of costl communities in the frontline of storms nd bech erosion. The South West Ctchments Councils ddresses these issues through its flgship costl enggement tool, the highly successful Dune Dudes progrm. The primry im of the Dune Dudes progrm, with its title chrcter Dune Dude nd the signture chrcter Cptin Costcre, is to engge young people, techers, fmilies, schools nd locl orgnistions with costl environmentl issues. This is presented in fun nd interctive wy s form of edutinment to reinforce cost cre messges through environmentl presenttions nd thetre worshops. These begin in the clssroom nd end on site t vrious costl loctions with rel outcomes through hnds-on costl rehbilittion projects. The performnce bsed extension progrm is delivered to schools, fetes, firs, holidy cmpgrounds nd t bech loctions during the summer holidys. SWCC s Costl cilittors Chris Gibbs nd Blir Drvill hve developed schools ctivities pcge to support the performnce nd hve lso produced clssroom worsheet mterils to consolidte the concepts delivered during their incursion nd excursion ctivities. The progrm is delivered throughout SWCCs costl footprint, from Wlpole Primry nd the DEC Wlpole holidy progrm on the south cost, through to the north t Riverside Primry School in Mndurh. The progrm prtners school groups with locl costl volunteering groups to help build community cpcity for costl projects. It engenders n environmentl conscience in prticipnts, resulting in helthier costline tht will be better protected into the future. Dune Dude (DD) is colourful, young surfing chrcter who is young nd cool nd nows very little bout costl ecology or bout treting the cost with pproprite respect. In colourful, flmboynt nd humorous performnce Dune Dude is educted bout how to interct with the cost by Cptin Costcre, the elderly gurdin of the cost. Cptin Costcre nd Dune Dude perform for younger udiences t schools, festivls nd holidy progrms. Children identify with the cool, young, hip Dune Dude chrcter nd hence, the progrm hs been clled the SWCC Dune Dude progrm. 4 Why do schools wish to be involved in n eduction nd volunteering progrm such s this? As prt of its new Ntionl Curriculum sttement, the Austrlin Curriculum Assessment nd Reporting Authority cites objectives such s Students re ctive nd informed citizens, they re responsible globl nd locl citizens. They volunteer to be ctive in the community, engge in ctivities to improve society, ctively prticipte nd/or ctively engge in locl restortion nd rehbilittion progrms. Being ctive, involved nd contributing citizens re core vlue overrching sentiments recommended in the new Ntionl Curriculum. The Dune Dudes progrm ddresses these wishes nd sentiments directly. In ddition, the ssocition of Dune Dudes with school progrms helps up-sill their techers bout costl environmentl issues. Indeed, techers often sy tht they didn t understnd the scope of costl issues until the vrious eductionl pcges were delivered to their children by SWCC. SWCC hs delivered professionl development worshops for techers bout the Dune Dudes progrm in Bunbury nd Mndurh. SWCC hs plns to extend this trining into southern res. Prticipting schools gin publicity in newsppers, the Deprtment of Plnning Costlines, publiction, rdio nd television through SWCC s communiction progrm with press releses nd the lie. Prfield Primry s PLUS (Prfield Lerning for Understnding Sustinbility) progrm hs been very much in the news; on rdio, newspper, TV, nd on the internet becuse of their prtnership with SWCC nd their school s sustinbility progrm. Over ten rticles in newsppers together with two Costline mgzine rticles, one TV interview, two rdio interviews nd internet references to SWCC on the Ntionl Austrli Bn site hve ll referred to the Dune Dudes youth progrm. Certin Science curriculum nd Society nd Environment curriculum ims re chieved through the incursions nd excursions. Experimentl design, costl processes, erosion, food chins nd webs, effects of mn on the environment, clssifying nd grouping, niml clssifiction, environmentl problem solving, indigenous costl history, climte chnge, microscopy, ferl orgnisms, mrine debris nd sustinble fishing re ll topics covered by the progrm. One primry school hs developed imposing bnners in their rt progrm to dvertise positive nd responsible costl behviour. Another school is developing innovtive costl nd eductive thetre s ids teching ids progrm bout costl issues s result of their SWCC prtnership. Worsheets for students hve been produced by Costl cilittors nd will continue to be developed to help techers nd support the costl issues progrm.
