3 1. Background Ujjain is situated on the Malwa Plateau along the eastern bank of river Kshipra in Madhya Pradesh state of Central India. The city was called Ujjayini in ancient times and is referred to as Ozone by Ptolemy. It is one of the seven important Hindu Religious Centers in India. According to Census 2011, there are 499 schools, 298 hospitals/dispensary/nursing home etc., 8875 shops/offices and 5012 Mixed use in Ujjain Municipal Corporation. Ujjain is one of the utmost religious tourist destination with the Presence of the Mahakaal Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. Ujjain witnessed high tourist footfall throughout the year specially in the month of Sravan. Ujjain Needs a robust and effective public transport system in the city which includes city bus services. There is need to develop a robust and effective public transport infrastructure as well as services in the city to fulfill the needs of the citizens as well as tourists. 2. Existing Public Transportation System The existing public transport system in the city includes various services such as Inter-para transit, City Bus services, e-rickshaws and auto rickshaws. This chapter below briefs about various public transport available in the city. a) Inter Para Transit services- this service includes shared autos as well as passenger four wheelers which covers all the major nodes/areas of the city. The IPT services are available from 7:00 am in the morning till late night about 10:30 PM. The fare for different routes and distances float between Rs 5 to a maximum of Rs 15 for any rout in the city. b) E- Rickshaws E rickshaw services are available in the core city area majorly covering Ujjain Junction, Mahakaal Temple and other nodes in the old city areas. The charges for e Rickshaws various from Rs 5 to a Maximum of Rs 10 Per person per ride. The services are available from about 7 o clock in the morning till late night. c) Auto rickshaws- Auto rickshaws services are also present in the city from morning till late night. The auto rickshaws are available at various major nodes of the city such as Dewas gate, Nanakheda bus stand, Ujjain Junction, Mahakaal temple, Ramghat, Indore Gate and other important nodes of the city. d) Ujjain City Bus services- Ujjain City Transport Service Limited (UCTSL) an Special Purposes Vehicle formed for managing and operation city public transport services. UCTSL has about 50 buses for operations of intercity service to nearby cities and towns such as Indore, Dewas, Mandsaur etc. UCTSL owns another set of 40 city buses which operates in various routes providing intracity bus services to citizens and tourists. 3 P a g e

4 3. Proposed Bus Shelters 1.1 Locations Ujjain Smart City Proposal (SCP-Ujjain) includes a 5 bay BRT system and strengthening of the city transport system. The USCL has taken the project for development of Bus Shelters in co-ordination with the UCTSL. Initially, UCTSL has proposed 62 locations with 71 bus shelters across the city. USCL has proposed for Smart bus shelters inclusive of various IT interventions for the convenience of the commuters. The Number of Bus shelters proposed by the Ujjain Smart City limited has been increased to 88, including bus shelters at both the sides of the road. Ujjain Smart City Limited has proposed to take the project on PPP model with revenue generation from various sources. Following are the design options for bus shelters to be developed. 12 2.1 Bus Shelter Design The following Designs has been developed and proposed for various locations. Figure 1-5 Option 1 Features 1. PIS (Public information system) LED Display for real time information on arrival of buses 2. LED display for advertisement and other public information if required 3. Dustbins separate dustbins for organic and inorganic garbage. 4. Seats a well-designed prefabricated seating space 5. Steel structure for longevity 6. Ramp for Physically handicapped and tactile for blinds. 7. Various advertisement spaces for revenue generation. 12 P a g e

15 The option 1 has been proposed in 16 Locations covering the most important nodes of the city. This design includes the following. 1. Vending Kiosk for refreshments and need full such as newspapers etc. 4. Smart Toilet a prefabricated toilet Safe Secured Clean and Green 5. Dustbins separate dustbins for organic and inorganic garbage. 6. Seats a well-designed prefabricated seating space 7. Steel structure for longevity 8. Various advertisement spaces for revenue generation. 4. Ridership and Route Details 4.1 Ridership The Average Daily Rider ship of the City bus Services is 6250 for last operational period of from November 2016 to April The Table Below Shows the monthly as well as daily average ridership.
