1 Don t Make It Easy How to Prevent Auto Theft and Auto Burglaries On July 1, 2017, between the hours of midnight and 4:30 am, Lake Forest Police investigated five (5) cases of Burglary to Motor Vehicle, two (2) cases of Motor Vehicle Theft and two (2) cases of Recovered Stolen Motor Vehicle that were stolen from Highland Park and Glencoe but found in Lake Forest. All of these cases had three things in common: the cars were left unlocked in the driveway, keys or key fobs were left in the cars, and something worth stealing was left in the car. The Lake Forest Police wants to remind all residents to help us stop crimes of opportunity in our community. During the last year Lake Forest and surrounding communities have suffered a rash of car thefts and auto burglaries. Lake Forest Police have investigated 21 vehicles reported stolen and 47 vehicles burglarized from June 2016 to June Car thefts and auto burglary prevention, like all crime prevention measures, involves common sense measures that limit the criminal's ability and/or opportunity to commit the crime. Vehicle theft is more often a crime of opportunity, where thieves come to Lake Forest and surrounding communities for the purpose of looking for open car doors to search vehicles for valuables or for keys to the vehicles so they can steal them. Statistics show that would be thieves will move on to another vehicle if your doors and windows are locked. The more they are successful in finding cars to steal or items to take in our community, the more likely they will keep coming back for more. With very little time and effort, you can make a huge difference in your vulnerability to auto burglary and theft by taking these three simple steps: Don t keep items of value in plain sight or take them out of the vehicle completely. Cell phones, cameras, computers, wallets, purses, vehicle titles, etc. Thieves can sell your stuff for money and can get a lot of personal information from you about your home, family, and friends. Make sure your car windows and doors are locked, even the trunk. Offenders will try to enter vehicles through open doors or trunks that have not been properly closed. Don t leave your keys or key fob inside the car. Thieves cannot only steal your car; they will also have access to your home. It only takes seconds to steal your car or steal your stuff! It's not at all uncommon for thieves to walk down a neighborhood at night or down a row of parked vehicles at the mall and check vehicle doors to see if they are unlocked. The Lake Forest Police Department needs your help to keep our community OFF the target list of the thieves by following these simple steps to reduce your vulnerability and that will force the thieves to look elsewhere.
