Changes made to this document The most recent version of this document is available from here: All changes since June 2017 Added Upgrading SANsymphony Upgrade overview Upgrades are now supported for all SVA models running SANsymphony versions 10.0 PSP 4 or greater without using an SVA-specific upgrade kit. In this case use the standard SANsymphony 10.x software installers. Models still running SANsymphony 9.0 PSP 4 or any SANsymphony versions before 10.0 PSP 2 still need to use the appropriate SVA upgrade kit(s) to move to SANsymphony 10.0 PSP 4 first before being able to use standard SANsymphony 10.x software installers. Updated Upgrading the SVA hardware - Server BIOS and firmware Independent upgrades or modifications to existing BIOS or Firmware (including Server, HBA, NIC and RAID controller BIOS or firmware) are not allowed for all SVA models running SANsymphony 10.0 PSP 7 Update 1 or earlier. This is because the SVA upgrade kit(s) manage all BIOS and firmware settings as part of the upgrade process and independent modifications may conflict with some of the pre-upgrade checks that the kits perform, which may then stop the upgrade from completing. Server software overview - The Windows operating system For any SVA models running SANsymphony 9.0 PSP 4 or any versions before 10.0 PSP 7 Update 2; please refer to the documentation that comes with the SVA for all requirements. For any SVA models running SANsymphony 10.0 PSP 7 Update 2 or later; please refer to the standard SANsymphony Release Notes and the minimum hardware and software requirements located here: SANsymphony licensing This section has been updated with information for the new license model introduced April 1 st For previous changes made to this document please see page 22 Page 3

Upgrading SANsymphony Upgrade overview Each release of SANsymphony can be broken down into three parts Major version number This is designated by the first 2 digits of the software version. Example: SANsymphony-V 9.0 (or ) SANsymphony 10.0 (or ) Notes All SVA models running SANsymphony versions 10.0 PSP 4 or greater without using an SVAspecific upgrade kit. Product service patch (PSP) PSPs are identified by the 3rd digit of the software version. Example: SANsymphony-V 9.0 PSP 4 (or ) SANsymphony 10.0 PSP 6 or ( ) Notes All SVA models running SANsymphony versions 10.0 PSP 4 or greater without using an SVAspecific upgrade kit. Update Update versions are identified by the 4 th digit of the software version. Example: SANsymphony-V 9.0 PSP 4 Update 4 (or ) SANsymphony 10.0 PSP 6 Update 2 (or ) Notes Upgrading to the next update can be done using either designated SVA Upgrade Kit or a by using a standard SANsymphony update that matches your installed SANsymphony major version + PSP. PSPs are cumulative (i.e. they contain all enhancements and fixes from the previous PSP) as well as any fixes from updates associated with all earlier PSPs. Page 15
Upgrading SANsymphony Upgrading SANsymphony-V 9.x The only available upgrade for SANsymphony-V 9.x is to SANsymphony There are no PSPs available for Choose Software for Appliances (SVA). Locate and download Fujitsu-DataCore SVA to 10.0 Upgrade Kit. Follow the upgrade instructions in the documentation provided with the upgrade kit. Very important When upgrading from SANsymphony 9.x do not use any other upgrade kit as this prevent you DataCore Server from working. Page 16
Upgrading SANsymphony Upgrading SANsymphony 10.x Only Product Service Pack (PSP) upgrade kits and updates are available for SANsymphony 10.x. All SVA models running SANsymphony versions 10.0 PSP 4 or greater without using an SVAspecific upgrade kit. In this case use the standard SANsymphony 10.x software installers. Models still running SANsymphony versions before 10.0 PSP 2 still need to use the appropriate SVA upgrade kit(s) to move to SANsymphony 10.0 PSP 4 first before being able to use standard SANsymphony 10.x software installers. Applying/Upgrading a Product Service Patch (PSP) Choose Software for Appliances (SVA). Locate and download the Upgrade Kit that refers to your SVA series type and the current PSP version you already have installed. Very important: It is now possible to upgrade to the latest SANsymphony 10.x PSP version number (i.e. in sequence for your Major version) if you are already running SANsymphony 10.0 PSP1 or greater, without the need for all the DataCore Servers in the Server Group to already on the same PSP version. For example, you can upgrade directly from SANsymphony 10.0 PSP1 to SANsymphony 10.0 PSP5 update 2 without having to upgrade all the DataCore Servers in the Server Group to SANsymphony 10.0 PSP2 first. Servers still running SANsymphony 10.0 (without PSP1 installed) must upgrade all the DataCore Servers in the Server Group to SANsymphony 10.0 PSP1 first before being able to upgrade directly to SANsymphony 10.0 PSP5 update 2. Page 17
Upgrading SANsymphony Applying/Upgrading a Update If an Upgrade Kit does not already include the latest 'Update' to the latest PSP (e.g. Fujitsu- DataCore SVA 10.0 PSP5 Update 2 Upgrade Kit); or if there is a DataCore SANsymphony v10 PSP Update greater than the update included in the Upgrade Kit then you can use the standard DataCore SANsymphony v10 software to update your SVA software. Locate and download the DataCore SANsymphony software that refers to the current Update version of the PSP/Major version you have installed. Very important: It is possible to upgrade to later Update version numbers for your PSP without having to upgrade to any Update versions that may have been released in between. For example, to upgrade to SANsymphony-V 9.0 PSP4 Update 4 from SANsymphony-V 9.0 PSP4 Update 1 there is no requirement to apply any of the Updates 2 3 beforehand. Page 18
Downgrading SANsymphony Downgrading to any previous software version - major version, PSP or Update - is not allowed. Page 19
SANsymphony licensing The SANsymphony software comes with its own in-built, 30-day trial license. During this trial period the SANsymphony software is fully functional and can be used as normal, but after 30 days the license will expire and the software will stop functioning. Permanent SANsymphony software licenses are provided (via ) to the DataCore Partner as well as to the end user when the SVA is shipped. If you have not received your permanent license keys please contact your DataCore Partner who will be able to help you. License types There are three types of license models that are possible with SANsymphony, but not all of them are allowed with the SVA. License Models (before April 1 st 2018) License Models (after April 1 st 2018) Volume (VL) HVSAN (HS) BULK Enterprise (EN) Standard (ST) Large Scale (LS) Allowed Not allowed Not allowed Allowed Not allowed Not allowed Notes Existing SVA customers still using the old Volume (VL) license type do not have to upgrade any license keys and all new capacity licenses ordered after April 1 st 2018 will be of the type Enterprise (EN) that will work with the older Volume (VL) license key model. Do not activate any permanent software licenses on any SVAs that are going to be added to an existing Server Group. Wait until they have been added to the Server Group first before activating any permanent software licenses. Page 20
Joining other Server Groups With other SVA Hardware Make sure that the version of SANsymphony (including Product Service Patch and any updates) on the SVA is the same as the other DataCore Servers in the Server Group before attempting to join a Server Group already containing other DataCore Servers. The Join Server Group function (by clicking on the link restart-join C:\RCW\) will fail if there is a SANsymphony version mismatch between any of the DataCore Servers within the Server Group. Upgrade the DataCore Server(s) that are at the lower version first, so that they match the other DataCore Servers and then re-run the Join Server Group function. With different SVA models Mixing different SVA models (e.g. SVA M1 with non-m1 series) in the same Server Group is allowed but the requirement regarding matching SANsymphony versions across all DataCore Servers still apply. With other non-sva hardware Mixing SVA hardware with other server hardware using SANsymphony in the same Server Group is allowed but the requirement regarding matching SANsymphony versions across all DataCore Servers still apply. Page 21
