2 Overview Flybrid Systems started as a motorsport company and have been developing flywheel hybrid systems since the beginning of 2007 These systems work much like the more familiar electric systems but are fully mechanical and store captured braking energy in a high-speed flywheel Key attributes are high power, low weight, high efficiency and a low cost in mass production

3 Introduction Flybrid systems feature 60,000 RPM flywheels mounted inside a vacuum chamber in order to make the flywheel small, light and inexpensive The systems are reliable and completely safe 11 patents protect the key features

4 Typical Characteristics High efficiency of 70% round trip Full performance over the whole system life Works over a wide temperature range Works with all types of prime mover ¼ of the size, weight and cost of an equivalent electric hybrid system

6 LMP1 Le Mans Car A Flybrid system powered the first hybrid car ever to race in the Le Mans 24 hour race This 100 kw system weighs just 37.9 kg including all pipes, fluids and electronics

7 Jaguar Demo Car Demonstrated improvement of 22.4% fuel consumption on the Artemis cycle including stop / start

8 Manufacturing strategy Flybrid make about 20% of the parts for the systems in-house and are keen to develop the manufacturing side of the business We have developed clever manufacturing methods for the difficult parts and protected this IP We also develop our own control systems and electronics

9 Production The systems are scalable from small 15 kw mild hybrid solutions to large 100 kw+ systems for buses and trucks Current Technology Readiness Level is TRL 7 and Manufacturing Readiness Level is MRL 5 For high volume applications Tier 1 automotive suppliers are available to manufacture the systems The first cars should go on sale to the public in 2014

10 Market Potential We estimate that by 2020 the market for hybrid cars will be 22M vehicles Flybrid think they can secure 10% of this market representing revenue of over 2Bn This target can be met without ever securing a new client and is probably quite conservative

11 Funding Route Taken The whole of the business start-up and development to date has been privately financed by the two founding partners This has meant constraints on work we could do Only jobs that at least break even Needed to find shared goals with the clients To do development that we were interested in as well as projects that they were interested in We decided company strategy and then sold appropriate projects

13 Challenges The challenges for entrepreneurs in our position are: The company is not saleable until a certain TRL has been achieved but to get there the spend can be really significant By the time you get there the value of the business is huge It is really difficult to find an exit strategy at a sensible price
