2 Introduction HVAC & some pumping applications frequently include multiple pumps & fans, require redundant drive schemes or utilize auto restart function in fault conditions. Section 1: Multi-pump/fan Section 2: Redundant Drive Section 3: Auto Restarts Each section will answer: What is the function How does it work Why is it used What type of customers/applications use it 2

3 Multi-Pump/Fan What is the function? The Multi-Pump/Fan control function is used in process loop applications where multiple pumps and fans are used to maintain pressure or flow. Use similar PID process loops to try an maintain a setpoint but use additional fans or pumps to boost system if single pump/fan is not able to meet desired level 2 types of Multi-Pump/Fan Controls Single Drive for single motor/other motors across the line Multi Drive for each motor 3

4 Multi-Pump/Fan How does it work? Single Drive Single drive runs in PID process Control Relay outputs are used to alternate and bring in motors on the drive or across the line. Multi-Drive Single Drive for each motor. Master Drive have control wired to it and is in PID control. Slaves are enabled over Modbus communication to run at same speed as Master. 4

6 Multi-Pump/Fan What Application use it? 1. External control system provides cfm setpoint to drive 2. Pressure feedback measures the air flow 3. Drive adjusts the speed of the fan motor to maintain desired cfm 4. If single motor can t maintain a relay output enables Contactor to start/stop 2 nd Motor across the line Eaton Corporation. Drive is adjusts the speed of the fan motor in the cooling tower to cool water 4. If Master can t maintain sends command to next drive to start and share speed Eaton Corporation. 9 Redundant Drive What is the function? Redundant Drive control provides a customer the ability to bypass or alternate one drive to another in the case of a fault or to keep equal run time. VFD s can be hardwired with relays or via communications Multiple Controllers for full redundancy 9

11 Redundant Drive Why is it used? Control benefits Redundant control for motor operation in fault situation with input disconnect to remove power Back up if main VFD fails or to maintain equal run time between drives Can be controlled via hard relays or via Communication link to perform switching Example: 1. Lightning strike a building & air handling unit 2. VFD 1 fails 3. All fans/air conditioning turn off 4. VFD 2 gets signal from VFD 1 to turn on 5. Fans/air conditioning regain power

12 Redundant Drive What customers use it? Redundant Drive Hardwired Typically used in critical applications Hospitals, Data Centers, Refrigeration Pros Hardwire controls to put into back up drive Familiar mechanical selector switch to select lead drive Redundant Drive - Communication Becoming more common as products are having more communications on board. Pros Simple setup for Redundancy Fewer components = lower cost Cons Higher Cost Cons If Control Module fails it won t swap drives Ext 24V DC power to power Control Module 12

14 Auto Restart What is the function? Auto Restart Control allows for the drive to perform fault reset upon defined fault condition in a defined period of time. There are 9 fault protections can be auto restart enabled Undervoltage fault Overvoltage fault Overcurrent fault 4mA loss fault Motor over temp fault External fault Underload fault IGBT Temp fault Unit Over temp fault User determines the number of allowable restarts without manual fault rest and the period of time before the restart count restarts 14
