5 2010 MaxxForce 11 & 13 Fuel System Priming Tool INTRODUCTION WELCOME! Welcome to the 2010 MaxxForce 11 & 13 Fuel System Priming Tool training course for technicians. This course will introduce you to the Fuel Priming Tool, its components, and the steps required to prime the fuel system on 2010 MaxxForce 11 & 13 engines. Objectives Upon completion of this course, you will be able to identify the purpose of the Fuel System Priming Tool, Identify the Priming Tool s components, and perform the Fuel System Priming Procedure using the Priming Tool. 6 STUDY GUIDE 2010 MaxxForce 11 & 13 Fuel System Priming Tool Training Program PURPOSE OF THE TOOL The Fuel System Priming Tool is designed to assist in priming the fuel filter housing and high-pressure fuel pump, following high-pressure fuel pump replacement. Female Pressure Adapter COMPONENTS The Female Pressure Adapter connects to the engine fuel supply line. Male Suction Adapter The Male Suction Adapter connects to the Primary fuel filter output port. Pressure Regulator Lever The Pressure Regulator Lever is used to adjust the tool s fuel pressure. Sight Glass The Sight Glass allows the technician to visually confirm that air is no longer present in the fuel system. Ball Valves The Ball Valves prevent fuel spillage when the tool is not in use. Filter Housing The Filter Housing should be filled with clean diesel fuel. Types of Fuel Filters The fuel priming tool will work with the Davco or the Parker - Racor chassis fuel filters. PREPARING THE TOOL Let s begin by preparing the tool before hooking it up to the vehicle. Make sure that the ball valves located on both the pressure and suction hoses are in the off position. Prior to use, the Tool s fuel filter housing must be full with clean diesel fuel. Place a drain pan under the chassis mounted primary fuel filter to catch any spilled fuel. Also remove and clean any dirt or debris that may be present on the primary fuel filter and fuel lines. 4

7 2010 MaxxForce 11 & 13 Fuel System Priming Tool STUDY GUIDE CONNECTING TO THE VEHICLE S FUEL SYSTEM Now that the tool is prepped, let s go ahead and connect the tool to the vehicle. If the chassis mounted fuel filter has been drained or replaced, fill the filter with clean diesel fuel. Fill the cartridge type filter from the top; Fill the spin on type filters using the hand priming pump. Disconnect the engine fuel supply line from the primary fuel filter housing. The fuel line can be disconnected by pushing the red release tab on the fuel fitting and pulling away from the filter housing. Connect the tool s male suction adapter to the fuel filter housing. Now let s connect the tool s female pressure adapter to the vehicle s fuel line. With both the male and female adapter connected to the fuel system, the ball valves can be opened. Now that connecting the tool is completed, let s move on to the next step. 5

8 STUDY GUIDE 2010 MaxxForce 11 & 13 Fuel System Priming Tool Training Program PRIMING THE FUEL SYSTEM Our next step is priming the fuel system; this has been broken down into four stages. To prevent damage to Fuel System components, set the Priming Tool s pressure regulator to 50 psi (345kPa) prior to servicing MaxxForce 11 & 13 engines. Priming Stage 1 First make sure the pressure regulator lever is set to 50 psi (345kPa). Connect the tool to power and press the power button. With the fuel system priming tool running, visually check for any leaks. Monitor the sight glass for air bubbles while the tool is running. Once air bubbles are no longer present, run the tool for at least two minutes. Stage 1 is now complete. Let s move on to stage 2. Priming Stage 2 With the tool on, start the vehicle s engine. Run the engine at 1200 rpm for two minutes. Then return the engine to idle and shut both the engine and tool off. Now that stage 2 is done, it s time to move on to stage 3. Priming Stage 3 With the engine and tool off, close the ball valves on the suction and pressure hoses. Disconnect the tool and reconnect the fuel filter lines to the primary fuel filter. Stage 3 is now complete. Time for the stage 4. The last stage in the process. Priming Stage 4 Restart the vehicle s engine and run at 1200 rpm for 2 minutes. Then return to idle, and then turn the engine off. Congratulations! You have now completed priming the fuel system. 6
