5.2.7 The concept The coupling differs completely in its concept from clamps a waffle-type seal in which the rubber has to be highly compressed to repair a damaged pipe effectively. In the case of coupling the whole surface between the sealing lips can be used and a very tight seal is achieved thanks to the inherent progressive sealing effect. Further advantages are: very simple to manipulate suitable for temporary (re-usable) and permanent repairs no separate components; a compact ready-to-use mounting assembly very short installation and down time absolutely leak tight fitting tools: tensioning belt, tensioner STRAUB couplings + splice piece In a case where the damage to the pipe exceeds the usable sealing width C of the coupling (see pages 56-61), these provide the perfect, quick and permanent solution. Long splits, corroded areas and leaky joints can be repaired rapidly and economically two STRAUB- GRIP or STRAUB-FLEX couplings and splice piece. Using two STRAUB-GRIP pipe couplings and a suitable spool piece enables large areas of damage to be repaired in a manner that is resistant to axial tension. Installation procedure Remove the damaged section and replace it an appropriate length of pipe fixed in position STRAUB couplings. Centre the couplings over the pipe ends and tighten them to the specified torque. Large holes Long Large pitted Leaky Sheath fractures cracks areas pipe joints Technical Manual 3/03 Page 64
Axial misaglinment of the pipework can be compensated out any problem (see also page 70). This method ensures a reliable, tension-free, long-life pipe repair involving a minimal down time for the pipework system concerned. Cardan effect achieved through the use of a splice piece. The flexibility concerning angular deflection and axial misalignment can be useful for the connection of pipes in order to compensate for differences in settling. 18 5.4 Max. allowable setting gap between pipe ends R Pipe end spacings occur through misalignment, mounting inaccuracies and changes in length. Such distances in total must not exceed value R. A greater in total pipe end spacing can be accommodated when a strip insert is positioned between the gasket lips. Strip insert 1. Axial setting gap between pipe ends 2. Setting gap between pipe ends through angular deflection The gasket has to be protected from abrasion by the pipe ends in the following cases by either reducing the pipe end gap or by using a band insert (Material: stainless steel or HDPE): External pressure (e.g. under water) Vacuum (negative-pressure) Swelling (chemical influence) High temperatures High levels of mechanical or dynamic loading Plastic pipes An appropriate distance between pipe ends is to be included in order that STRAUB-FLEX/-REP couplings can compensate for expansion / contraction movement. 20 5.5 Angular deflection a Angular deflection α Pipework systems, whether buried or installed above ground, are subject to various movements such as settling in groundworks, loading by traffic, building subsidence or temperature-induced length changes. Additional dynamic stresses are sometimes encountered especially in such fields as offshore and marine applications. STRAUB products are not rigid connections but are flexible joints that permit all around angular deflection of the pipe axes by up to 5 degrees. Furthermore they offer considerable safety. The gasket is positioned away from any pressure forces and ensures a tension-free and long-life connection even under angular deflection conditions. 21 5.6 Axial movement Dl Axial movement l STRAUB-FLEX couplings are pipe connectors and expansion joints combined into one unit. The rolling sealing action of the unique FLEX rubber profile enables axial length changes to be accommodated out any movement on the surface of the pipe (no abrasion, no migration). 22 Long pipe lines are subject to thermal movement due to influence of temperature. By using STRAUB couplings to join pipes, this movement can be taken up in the coupling, reducing or eliminating the need for expansion joints or bellows. Each length of pipe should have one anchoring point and one guiding point close to the coupling, thereby ensuring that any change in length in the section of pipe is transmitted into the relevant coupling. End load created by internal pressure can be accommodated at the end of the line by additional anchoring points. Sewage treatment plant Stuttgart Mühlhausen / Germany Air pressure line 80 C/176 F STRAUB-FLEX 2L mm/24 Connection and compensation of 6 mm/0.24 in each coupling STRAUB-FLEX / The length of each pipe and number of couplings to be installed depends upon the total change in length to be accommodated. The thrust forces generated by internal pressure can be calculated, and the fixed point adequately constructed by calculation. This calculation, and advice on the number of couplings required to accommodate thermal movement can be obtained by contacting the Applications Department at STRAUB. E / Technical Manual 3/03 Page 71
5.7 Axial misalignment Axial misalignment According to the DIN standard 2463 the permissible axial misalignment for STRAUB couplings amounts to 1 % of OD or a maximum of 3 mm. Axial misalignment can also be converted into an axial deflection or take the form of a cardan link incorporating two couplings. As described below, considerably greater axial misalignment can be bridged by using the appropriate installation procedure. Sewage treatment plant Mannheim 2000 A STRAUB-FLEX 2L 806 mm EPDM sleeve and stainless steel lock-parts was used to connect the main receiver to the basin wall feed-through. The thin walled pipe used (806 x 4 mm) and the long welded seam resulted in the pipe ends being badly deformed. The radial irregularity was as much as 32 mm in places. The permissible deviation according to DIN 2463, Part 1 is only 16 mm. Trying to overcome such irregularities through welding is a complex task, causes considerable heat problems, results in stresses and is aesthetically poor. 5.8 Resistance against bending and torsion STRAUB couplings are specifically designed for the absorption of bending and torsion through flexible yielding. This flexibility is also basis for good absorption properties. Please consult our application department. E / Technical Manual 3/03 Page 72
5.9 Special order couplings Electrical conductivity of STRAUB-FLEX/-REP STRAUB-FLEX / REP couplings do not provide electrical conductivity. Electrical conductivity can be ensured by the application of special electrical conductivity clips which have to be fitted into the coupling (Straub-option). Our Clip-system was proofed by the Swiss Electrotechnical Association (SEV) relevant clauses of EN Also in shipbuilding our electrical conductivity clips are approved. See for instance the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certificate No. 01-MF15543-X, date issued 3. of April STRAUB-Electrical conductivity clips are available starting from diameter 2.5 (73 mm). Thickness (a), wideness (b) and number of conductivity clips are depending on coupling diameter = Casing 2 = Conductivity clip 3 = Sealing sleeve 2 STRAUB-electrical conductivity clips instead of external cable connectors. STRAUB-FLEX / Waste water treatment plant Frankfurt-Sindlingen Electrical conductivity through external cable connector (made on site) STRAUB-FLEX 2LS used as main joint. Technical Manual 3/03 Page 73
5.9.2 Demagnetised couplings Test certificate WTD 71 / FGM confirms that the magnetic single measurement of pipe couplings yielded values in the permissible tolerance ( TESLA). Such couplings, which carry the mark Demagnetised, can be ordered from STRAUB Silicon-free couplings These couplings are fabricated in a special assembly area under extreme care and cleanliness conditions and are individually packaged. They are mostly used in the chemical and the automotive industry for spray-booth applications. Such couplings, which carry the mark Silicon-free, can be ordered from STRAUB.
