1 GUNSMOKE VOLUME # 13 Issue # 7 October 1997 THE BUFF CHRONICLES NOTES FROM THE IPSC RANGE CHAIRMAN For many years I d been told that The 3-gun vent was SOF in Las Vegas. After about that long procrastinating I sent in my $ last January and tarted planning the big event. Now you need to know hat this is a tactical match which doesn t allow comps or copes (except for rifle battle scopes like ACOG s). So I was able to buy a couple of new guns--that s always a plus. Anyhoo I loaded the old 300D up and hit the oad at 5:00 a.m. to pick up ace navigator Louis Cambre nd immediately hit the worst traffic of the week on 80 near Fremont before dawn. Arrived Vegas around 4:30 ust in time to go register and find out that we were quadded with Alan Samuel, Adam Carlson, and JoJo Vidanes. Our squad turned out great and don t emember laughing so much and any match in years. The rifle stages were very hard since they made me take off my bipod and shoot in very weird positions. Also we fired shotguns from a moving jeep like thing and had to run a pistol course with a brief case handcuffed to wrist. The match was very well run and usually on ime. Five person squads made for very little waiting and xcept that I always had to go first, there was no problem with anything--well maybe the wind was a little bothersome, at least to the outhouses which were blown over. I was recruited to shoot on a team event with three uys from New Jersey who needed a fourth. As long as I didn t have to deal with rifle shots I did ok. That too was a blast. After shooting the 3-day match we spent the next day wandering around the convention center seeing who ould spend the most money. Not sure whether Louis or won since it was very close. Saturday afternoon was the pre awards hand out or the likes of me and I have a beautiful Al Mar knife which is being currently used as my number one letter opener. They also had results to hand out to all then. We hit the road Sunday a.m. and would have been home or dinner except for missing the Bakersfield turnoff and ruising through LA and past Forrest Lawn (navigational rror). I already sent in my entry for 98! 2 page 2 GUNSMOKE October, VOLUME 13, ISSUE 7. MATCH DIRECTOR S REPORT OCTOBER CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES The Oct Championship match ran very smoothly except for the low turnout. I thought for sure after everyone signed up that we would have enough for 12 shooters per squad. Sorry about that squad 4 and thanks to the shooters that had to be moved. I started calling for help in the beginning of Sept., leaving message's and more message's to some of the people on the RO list that I haven't seen for quite a while. But strike after strike I had to fall back on some of the same old guys that seem to be working all the time. Thanks to Al Jung for stage 1 and 2. Al had set up a classifier on range 1.5 (2) and a stage on 1. Unfortunately the classifier was not legal for 1997 so Sunday morning we decided rather then tear down the stage on range 1 to fit a classifier, we would just make up another stage for range 1.5 (2) and not have a classifier. Kevin Chu came out Sunday morning just to help set up a stage on range 1 not knowing what we had done. He then helped design and set up the stage on range 1.5 (2) even though he had to go to work that morning. He came out just to help set up. WHAT A GUY!! Russ Wakida started at the beginning of the stage on range 2 (3) and Steve Wong started at the end. Steve worked backwards and they came up with a fun, fast and furious stage. Also in their CREW were Ray Wakida, Ken Hashimoto, and Dave Werner. On stage 4 were hose monsters, Rod Maeda and Randy Melton with another gem of the stage. Helping out was Mike Bush. During the match, Mike came up to me and asked to be put on the list of people to help with stages. He even went as far as giving me his home phone number. We need more people like Mike. Common' guys. Be like Mike. I know there are a lot of people out there that feel the same way, but don't know how to volunteer their help. PLEASE look at the MD list and give them a call. Stage 5 was Carl Roessler's' baby. He must have been a graffiti artist at heart because all morning he was spray painting everything on the stage with all different colors. Thanks again to everyone that helped and yeah, yeah, yeah I owe you guys one or maybe two, just put it on my account on account I have no money. (it's true, I'm his daughter. SOS Kelly) Congratulations to all the winners but you know me, everyone that shot are the winners. Match results to follow. SYBFTR Ebert D. Kan Match Director SATURDAY R.O.
