1 GUNSMOKE VOLUME # 13 Issue # 6 August-September 1997 THE BUFF CHRONICLES NOTES FROM THE IPSC RANGE CHAIRMAN This space is usually reserved for something humorous, IMHO, but this month I would like to devote the column to the subject of sportsmanship as applied to IPSC shooting. The pursuit of prizes and wooden placks sometimes drives the best of us to acting immaturely in an all out total effort to win. Now this winning of an award may be nice for the winner, but when it is done at someone else s expense I ask you all to consider the price. We are all out here shooting and playing at games in the pursuit of recreation, fun, diversion--we want to get away from the pressures of jobs and business. We want to forget about family problems. We just want to have a good time and spend our leisure time pursuing fun. If a shooter pulls an over competitive number in order to do better in a match--he puts all those around him in a state of NON FUN, and that s a drag. e.g. Our old friend the undeserved reshoot puts pressure on the RO. When appealed up to the MD, it ruins his day. If anyone else needs to get involved, their recreational pastime is compromised with inane bickering and arguing. At a recent Limited match we had a situation which after hearing accounts (I didn t have the misfortune to be involved but heard about it later), I would describe as adversarial officiating. Two of our guys were in hyper competitive mode and were not cutting any slack for each other, and they RO d each other on a couple of stages. There were questions raised of inappropriate scoring of penalties and requests for reshoots which were known to be undeserved. The MD had to get involved a several times and his day was much less fun than it should have been. All this bickering ended up being relatively meaningless in the overall standings and easily could have been avoided by a little less desire to win at all costs. This incident was looked at by the Hot Shots Board which decided that nothing could be proved--so the matter was dropped. Feathers were definitely ruffled, but nothing was done about that incident. HOWEVER as a result of this incident, I have instituted a new procedure for dealing with events raising questions of sportsmanship. The Hot Shots now have a Board of Control which will deal with any reports concerning issues of behavior or sportsmanship at the range and during the matches. Joan Wieder is the chair of the Board of Control and anyone can make a report to her (or to me) about any questionable incidents. Issues may be reported to the Board of Control by anyone--that is, someone who is not a party to the incident is able to report it and the incident will be investigated thoroughly. This Board of Control is empowered to apply sanctions to those violating the tenants of behavior and good sportsmanship. Hopefully the existence of a venue to explore and enforce behavior will deter our group from further over competitiveness which goes beyond the bounds of acceptable deportment. into the realm of unsportsmanlike conduct. THE LAST ISSUE OF GUNSMOKE HAD SOME MISTAKES IN THE RO SCHEDULE, YOUR EDITOR APOLOGIZES AND WOULD ASK FOR IMMEDIATE INPUT IT ANYONE SEES SUCH MISTAKES IN THE FUTURE. GOLDEN GATE CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT BUFF SABOED BY WATER SPORTS For the first time in nine years your fearless reporter shot the Golden Gate with a squad. Unfortunately he was sabotaged by evil Smythian water devices and vile vials of green slime courtesy of the King s minions. Out of six stages the Buffmeister managed to have one decent un, make that lurch. Beginning with the last stage as would befit a late middle aged person, I managed to start by dropping the tube of Elvis DNA for the first act after the buzzer beeped. Picked it up and shuffled off to mediocrity. On to Stage 1 where there was one very low and perniciously vil port which caused my old fiend Mike to appear and not for the last ime. Stage 2 presented an array of poppers which I couldn t seem to hit with less than 2 shots each. Another slow burn (as opposed to blazing un). Stage 3 had lots of little plates which were even harder to hit han the nasty poppers on 2. The only thing I did right here was managing to reload before I ran out of ammo. That was luck and it didn t help enuf. Stage 4 of Smyth (that s with an S) design was a zero. Succeeded in dropping the little gizmo which I was supposed to carry in my pocket and picked up 32 or so procedurals along the way. Too bad ince I did it fast (just ask my wife) for me. Stage 5 was a really good run. No misses, no procedurals, no mistakes, no extra shots. Less than twice the best time of the day and I was tickled pink--or was that not enuf Bullfrog? All in all the word inauspicious was given a new meaning at Golden Gate 97. To think I could have shot through and had an excuse. At least I had a nice name badge and got home by midnight. Thanks to all the people who helped clean up after the banquet nd especially to Wes Lew, Rich Theilen, and Brian Agron who along with me were out in the dark picking up the tables and chairs from the endor area at 10:15 p.m. From the trenches, Two Pigs F...ing Ray Wakida photo LEADER SQUAD DATE Linder squad 6 10/04/97 BAY BRIDGE CHARITY MATCH 10/11/97 Wong squad 7 10/18/97 Potter squad 8 10/25/97 Kan squad 9 11/01/97 Frenkel squad 0 11/08/97 Ruff squad 1 11/15/97 Maeda squad 2 11/22/97 Ochoa squad 3 11/29/97 Antonini squad 4 12/06/97 Roessler squad 5 12/13/97 Linder squad 6 12/20/97 Wong squad 7 12/27/97 Potter squad 8 01/03/98 Kan squad 9 01/10/98 Frenkel squad 0 01/17/98 Ruff squad 1 01/24/98 Maeda squad 2 01/31/98 Ochoa squad 3 02/07/98 Antonini squad 4 02/14/98 Roessler squad 5 02/21/98 Linder squad 6 02/28/98 Wong squad 7 03/07/98 Potter squad 8 03/14/98 Kan squad 9 03/21/98 Frenkel squad 0 03/28/98 Ruff squad 1 04/04/98 Maeda squad 2 04/11/98 Ochoa squad 3 04/18/98 Antonini squad 4 04/25/98 Roessler squad 5 05/02/98 Linder squad 6 05/09/98 Wong squad 7 05/16/98 Potter squad 8 05/23/98 Kan squad 9 05/30/98 Frenkel squad 0 06/06/98 Ruff squad 1 06/13/98 Maeda squad 2 06/20/98 Ochoa squad 3 06/27/98

MD Many thanks to my CRO s for their help. The challenging stages for us to shoot would not have been there without them. Steve Sui, Russ and Ran Wakida, Steve Wong, Alan Jung, Rod Maeda, Jon Ng, Randy Coates, Wesley Lew(stats) and Joe Solano, Thank-you!! We had 40 shooters show up for our July Limited Match and 13 open shooter shooting for practice. Congratulations to our match winners: Angelo Spagnoli won stages 1, 2, and 5; Rod Maeda won stages 3 and 4. Hey! Alan Samuel, maybe you should retire that slammin' jammin'.40 cal. and stick to your stock Para.45!! You did well with it. 1st B. The two lucky shooters of this match were Kathy Littman (scores didn t add up) who probably would have had 7 procedurals; and Jon Ng (poppers didn t fall upon calibration) Two poppers, lucky guy. Unlucky person was Dan Ruff who requested calibration of two poppers during the match and they both fell. To the 14 open shooters trying to beat Russ--nice try, but he beat us again guys.
