With the way Spring has started, this may be an article from the AMA website that we can all use this year Winter Weather Flying As a winter storm moves across the United States, hundreds of airplanes are stuck on the ground or delayed due to heavy snow, freezing rain, and low visibility. 2 March Meeting Minutes 03/07/2013, Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 7:30 PM Field Report : Old Business : There was a report that the field was looking good as of the day of the meeting. Jerry Humston stated that the plastic wrap that had been placed around the shelter for the Freeze Fly event had finally reached the point where he had to remove it a couple of weeks ago. This years Modelrama is now history. We had one of the best events ever and after all income and expenses were compiled, we netted right at $2,300 profit. And plans are already underway to make next year's event even better New Business : Joe Saylor reported there was a recent incident between a hexicopter and a commercial airliner JFK. Just a reminder to all of us to make sure we fly within the height limitations of 400 feet. The rules sign in the shelter needs a little work. Paul Stimmel said he would look into having it taken care of. Jimmy DeWinter mentioned that because the WACO field is an active flying field, anyone flying RC aircraft there has to have a spotter with them. Final Meeting Notes: The May meeting may be held at the RC Hobby shop on Harshman Road. More info will be available at the April meeting. $25.00 Gift Certificate Winners: Won by Joe Saylor who declined. Then won by Ken Eubanks. Attended by 27 Members and one New Member Bill Maschilot Show and Tell: Gene Webb displayed his completed WACO, covered with Ultracote and powered by a Super Tiger. Paul Stimmel displayed his new Beaver Night flyer, complete with floats. Ray Woods displayed a Mig 15 with a 46" wingspan. He hasn't had it in the air yet, but it looked great on the table. Ken Eubanks displayed a Nitro Models Cub that he paid $97 and then found out what is meant by the phrase "you get what you pay for." Many parts such as the cowl, landing gear, firewall, etc., either didn't fit or were so flimsy they had to be replaced. The plane looked good after much work by Ken. 3 From the President s Hanger First, I can t remember if I have thanked everyone that has participated, volunteered, and help pull together yet another successful Modelrama Swap meet. It was an amazing event, well attended and there sure was a lot of buying and selling going on!! Thanks to all for the hard work and dedication! I would also like to solicit ideas for cleanup and enhancement of the field. First the cleanup April 20 th is Field Maintenance Day and I would like to hear areas that what people think needs, fixed, cleaned up, or polished that could be tackled that day. Call me or me your ideas on that. Next, the Enhancements What things do you think would make the field pop? What would make it super cool and attract new people to come and want to keep coming back? Like putting in the electric a few years back has been a huge asset in attracting many new electric flyers. No idea would go un-reviewed, and it s nice as members to know that there are projects in the works to help enhance and make the field an even nicer place to spend time with friends and family. The flying season is just around the corner so be sure to look over everything before you come out to the field. Safety is #1 so be sure to check linkages, flight packs, connectors and replace or repair them as needed. Another reminder, the April meeting will be at the small room at the fairgrounds and the May meeting will be held at RC Hobby, Thanks to John and Jeanette for their hospitality once again!! When snow, frost or freezing rain build up on wings, control surfaces and propellers, the airfoils are no longer able to efficiently produce lift and an airplane becomes unable to fly. The snow or ice on the wing surface disrupts the smooth airflow over the wing and creates a very turbulent environment. 4 Jerry Harsch received the following asking for help from Mark Atwood Gerald My name is Mark Atwood, and I'm reaching out to all AMA organizations for assistance in sending our USA RC Aerobatics team to South Africa to compete in the 2013 World Championship. Many of you may know that the AMA selects the top three precision aerobatics pilots, and the top placing junior pilot, every two years to compete on the world stage. The USA has a long and proud tradition at these events, often bringing home the team gold, and occasionally individual gold! These are the who's who of the RC world with former US World Champions such as Chip Hyde and Quique Somenzini. This year's USA team is one of the best teams we've put forth in many years with Andrew Jesky who placed 3rd in the 2011 World Championships as team captain. Many people do NOT realize that the AMA and the pilots' sponsors do not cover the cost of this trip. While both make generous donations toward the event, it is left to the pilots and the team to raise the additional tens of thousands of dollars required to make the trip. The trip to South Africa is expected to be one of the most expensive, with an estimate of approximately $60,000 for the total team costs. If that sounds high, imagine taking 10 people (4 pilots, 4 callers/mechanics, team manager and assistant) to South Africa for 14 days, along with 8 large airplanes and equipment, local transportation for all equipment, etc. It adds up fast. To help fund this prestigious event, we are reaching out to all AMA clubs in hopes that each club can make a small donation to the team, thereby helping to spread the load. Donations of any size are appreciated, but we're hopeful that as a club, donations of $100 or more would be possible. We also ask that you make the donation methods available to your club members (especially those who participate in competitive activities) in hopes that individual donations will also be received. In addition to direct donations, the team is also selling various Team USA apparel to help raise money and that can found at along with our fundraising raffle. I realize that many modelers don't participate in competitive events and therefore may not feel that this endeavor is important. I can't stress enough that it IS important. Competitions drive most, if not all, of the technical innovations in our hobby, from the current trend toward electric power (the first large electrics were flown in the World Championships back in the mid '90s, well ahead of the sport enthusiast) all the way to the simplicity of efficient propeller designs. Supporting those who strive to excel on a world stage helps support our entire hobby, making it better for all of us.
