5 NIDAC VS Motor Troubleshooting-The Communicating Thermostat Is Your Best Troubleshooting Tool! Turn off power to equipment and wait five minutes for the internal capacitors to discharge Check for mechanical binding of fan bearing, make sure it can spin freely by hand Inspect line voltage wiring and harness connections and condition
6 Basic Troubleshooting Motor isn t spinning or runs abnormally. Verify thermostat is issuing call for activity. Check circuit breaker for trips or accidental shutoff. Verify communication cable and power cord are securely connected to control unit connectors. Inspect for shorts, detached wiring, or loose connections. Inspect control unit for broken or loose connectors.
7 Basic Troubleshooting Inspect motor and blower for accumulated dirt, internal debris or other signs of damage. Inspect blower fan for bent or missing blades, misaligned shaft, or unsecured mounting to shaft. Inspect motor shaft for damaged bearings. Inspect blower housing for cracks, dents, or corrosion. Inspect blower housing for secure mounting to system chassis. Verify motor shaft spins freely without effort, by hand, in both directions.
8 Basic Troubleshooting Do not operate the motor without blower wheel attached. Without the blower wheel, the motor will run continuously to a maximum speed and then stop.
9 Electrical Troubleshooting 1. Disconnect or turn off power to the furnace, air handler, or system being serviced and wait 5minutes. This allows the capacitors in the control unit to fully discharge. 2. Check the rotation and speed of the blower fan. Determine if blower fan can spin freely manually, without effort or assisted means. If binding occurs, the motor needs to be replaced. 3. Determine if HVAC system is wired for 120VAC power or 240 VAC power. 4. Disconnect power cord from connector on control unit. Inspect power cord for bent, damaged, or recessed wires and terminals. Contact Distributor if power cord contains bent, damaged, or recessed wires and terminals
10 Electrical Troubleshooting 5. Disconnect four wire communication cable from connector on control unit. Inspect cable for bent, damaged, or recessed wires and terminals. 6. Reconnect or turn on power to the furnace, air handler, or system being serviced.

14 NIDAC VS Motor Control Unit (End Bell) Check Disconnect the four-wire motor-to-control harness and remove the control unit Inspect the NTC thermistor inside the control unit for any cracks or breakage. Inspect the internal capacitors for swelling or bulging
15 NIDAC VS Motor Control Unit (End Bell) Check Replace control unit if NTC thermistor is damaged or capacitors are swollen or bulging
16 NIDAC VS Motor Control Unit (End Bell) Check Check phase-to-phase resistance on each of the phase wires ( red, blue, yellow) Resistance should be greater than 100K ohms for a good control unit
17 Motor Verification 1 Disconnect or turn off AC power to the furnace, air handler, or system being serviced. Wait 5 minutes to allow the capacitors to fully discharge. 2 Make sure the motor shaft spins freely without effort manually in both directions. If motor shaft spins freely, go to next step. Replace motor if the shaft does not spin freely without effort manually.
18 Basic Troubleshooting NOTE: Do not operate the motor without blower wheel attached. Without the blower wheel, the motor will run continuously to a maximum speed and then stop.
19 Motor Verification Resistance levels between any two contacts should be equal. If resistance levels are equal the motor is functioning properly. Replace motor if the resistance levels are not equal. Replace motor is the resistance levels are open circuited or short circuited. If both motor and control unit appear to be functioning correctly, reassemble motor and control unit and contact distributor.
20 Final Checks Check mounting and fastening of motor and control unit. Make sure control unit and motor are securely attached together and mounted tightly in HVAC system. Check control unit connectors. Inspect for shorts, detached wiring, or loose connections. Check power cord and communication cable connections. Make sure both are securely connected to control unit connectors. Check blower motor and verify wheel rotation. Make sure it spins freely manually without effort or assisted means in both directions. Check circuit breaker.
21 Troubleshoot Variable Speed Blowers- GMVC96 Troubleshoot Variable Speed Blower Via Ultra Check-EZ Diagnostic Tool
22 Troubleshoot Variable Speed Blowers- GMVC96 The UltraCheck-EZ diagnostic tool will test the motor windings, and communication module of the motor. Troubleshooting motor using the UltraCheck-EZ tool: Turn off power to furnace. Disconnect 4-wire connector cable from blower end bell. Connect the 4-wire connector from the EZ tool to the end bell outlet. Attach the alligator clips from the EZ tool to the 24 volt transformer.
23 Troubleshoot Blower Using UltraCheck EZ Tool Troubleshooting Motor Using the UltraCheck-EZ Tool (cont) Turn on power to the furnace. Press orange power button on the EZ tool. The EZ tool will then send a signal to the motor to rotate when the orange button is pressed. The GREEN LED is an indicating signal that communication is taking place. The green LED will start blinking if the motor is ok. If the green LED does NOT blink, the end bell should be replaced.
