Several years ago, Dick Sarpolus tweaked my interest in small foamy electric planes. I knew this would eventually lead to a ducted fan version of jets as well. I came across lots of information building foamy planes on the internet. One, in particular, seemed to have lots of success with easy-build profiles of jets using a mid-fuselage/wing propeller, with proof being an almost-weekly regular new video on You Tube. I obtained several plans from this site, < and started building their f18 Easy Build V2 series from blue-core foam from scratch. This design has a wingspan of 36.5 inches, a fuselage length of 53 inches, and an APC style 6x4E mid-fuselage/wing propeller, with options to add a KF-2 or a KF -4 to the flat airfoil for better lift or penetration through wind. Info on KF model airplane airfoils can be found at < I chose to go with the KF-4 airfoil as I will fly in moderate wind conditions. As I started building it, I decided to make two significant mods to their plan. First, I decided to change the conventional horizontal stabilizer and elevator arrangement to a fully-flying elevator like the full size one uses. I experimented with several concepts before settling on a configuration which is conventionally hinged on the inside of the fuselage, and sticks out the fuselage like a fully-flying stabilizer: simple and strong. In my opinion, this would need to have solid, precision controls; so I acquired small, inexpensive digital servos with metal gears. I use one See,Foamy, page 2

I programmed my transmitter to the normal mixing to fly conventional ailerons, conventional elevator, and use the ailerons as flaps and spoilers (deflecting up instead of down). The second modification to the plan was converting the midfuselage/wing propeller to an Electric Ducted Fan (EDF). This required additional mounting structure, cheater air intakes, and exhaust ducting. This added some weight to the model. However, the EDF also required a bigger battery, a 3-cell lipo, versus the 3-cell it was originally designed for, which added even more weight. On-line resources average this model at 26 to 32 oz. all-up-flying weight. After including the mods, electronics, and battery, mine ended up at about 42 oz.; very heavy against the 38 oz. max thrust output of the EDF I installed in this model. I have successfully flown this model several times. The only thing I would have preferred is improved thrust-toweight ratio in order to go un-limited vertically. One interesting thing I do when flying it is how I launch it. Based on watching several successful videos on the internet, I use the technique of grabbing it by the wing-tip and conducting a 1/3 body spin to use my centrifugal moment to gain tossing speed while holding the transmitter. For those interested in something like this, there are LOTS of free foamy plans available on the internet, especially for jets and profile-scale models: try one-you may enjoy it! There were approximately 36 members present. The minutes for May were read and approved. Joseph Acquisto read the treasurer s report and it was approved. OLD BUSINESS The 2014 budget for the club was reviewed and discussed with the membership. As of January 1, 2014 the monthly newsletter will no longer be mailed in paper format. It will be available to the membership on the OCM website. FIELD REPORT The field is looking good, due to all the rain we have had. However, there still continues to be holes in the field. SAFETY REPORT All members are responsible for the safe conduct at the field. NEW BUSINESS Paul Meier has club T shirts for sale for $8.00. The new house at the entrance to the field has three small children, so be careful when coming into and leaving the field. Two legal handicapped signs will be posted for parking. MODEL OF THE MONTH Sal Piu showed his F18 Easy Build Version 2 from RC Powers plans. It is a 70mm ducted fan and weighs 42oz. Gil Schwalb showed the engine of the month. 4 Page 4 Ocean County Modelers Inc. New Plane(s): Taking to the Air By David Collea I m always looking for something new or a little different. I first saw the Flip Flop on RC Groups in a foamy discussion thread. I found that the model was designed by Tim Moland and distributed by FancyFoam.com The plane comes as an unpainted, pre-cut EPP kit with a hardware pack that includes spars, push rods and skid material for $ The plane uses the foamy standard 26 gram 1500kv motor and a 3 cell 500 mah battery pack. The full price if you buy everything (motor, esc., props) would be about $70. The kit goes together real easy with the included instructions with the painting taking the longest as I chose to paint all the pieces before assembly. Speaking of assembly, the designer recommends and I used, a product called Welders to glue everything up. Welders is a contact adhesive that you would use anywhere instead of hot glue when assembling EPP. It is fantastic for strength, bonding ability and flexibility. There are a couple of videos at < that demonstrate the best way to use Welders when working with EPP. After painting and assembly I maidened the plane about midnight on a cold March evening could not wait until daylight. Never needed any trim and would fly in close enough for the driveway spotlight. Needless to say the plane flies wonderfully. It is a little pitchy but that is to be expected considering its design. It is also very durable, the design allows for the elimination of prop strikes and the plane will take off right side up or inverted, thus its name Flip Flop it basically doesn t know up from down and sometimes I don t either.
