3 ABOUT THE TEAM CUAir is a diverse group of highly motivated and dedicated students who aim to stimulate and foster interest in unmanned air systems, technologies, and careers. We combine all of our individual areas of expertise to design, manufacture, and present a system capable of completing various autonomous aerial operations including waypoint navigation, image processing, and target recognition. Our focus is to compete in the annual Student Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS) Competition hosted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), i.e. the AUVSI SUAS. The competition is held each summer at the Patuxent River Naval Base in Maryland and attracts the top unmanned air teams from around the world. To remain at the highest level of competition, we stay up-to-date with the latest technology, design new and original control systems, and incessantly test subsystems onboard the aircraft. We heavily rely on external sources to further our research and success. 3

4 Our Infrastructure The CUAir team is broken down into subteams: Airframe, Autopilot, Design and Operations, Electrical, Mechanical, and Software (Platform and Vision). These teams must work together through the design, implementation, and competition phases of the year in order to achieve our goal of a victory at the AUVSI SUAS. AIRFRAME The Airframe subteam is responsible for all the aerodynamic components of the plane. The subteam designs, builds, and tests a custom airframe capable of carrying our mission payloads. Using rapid prototyping technology and composite materials, the Airframe subteam is able to create a robust and efficient airplane that excels at all required tasks. AUTOPILOT SUBTEAMS The Autopilot subteam is responsible for ensuring that the aircraft can perform all necessary maneuvers to fulfill mission requirements. This involves configuring and tuning the autopilot for each of our aircrafts, as well as implementing software to aid in autonomous flight planning, which includes our autopilot ground station and path planning algorithms. The Autopilot subteam is constantly evaluating all autopilot systems available to determine which will perform best for us. 4

5 DESIGN AND OPERATIONS The Design and Operations subteam (Des-Ops) works at the intersection of technology, design, and business, similar to a start-up. Major projects of the subteam include the team's annual flight readiness review, technical journal paper, and website. Members primarily work on graphic and video design, front-end development, marketing and branding, sponsor relations, and outreach events. VISION The Vision subteam is responsible for automatically detecting and identifying targets from images captured by our plane while it's in flight. This process involves target localization, shape classification, alphanumeric classification, color classification, and orientation. We use a frontend to test.and view system results. We use a customized frontend to test our system. Our daily focus is to optimize system performance and accuracy ELECTRICAL The Electrical subteam handles the electrical hardware both in the aircraft and on the ground. The subteam works on the electronics firmware, avionics power distribution board, camera gimbal controller, airdrop controller, ground station antenna tracker, catapult launch controller, and communications system between the ground and the plane. 6 MECHANICAL The Mechanical subteam focuses on designing for system integration and human interaction, through a closed loop design process that utilizes rapid prototyping technology and continual testing to design a world class UAV. The mechanical subteam designs, builds, and tests the non-aerodynamic parts of the aircraft, such as the fuselage shell, camera gimbal, electronics bay, and airdrop mechanism, as well as various ground systems used for assistance during flight and subsystem testing, such as the antenna tracker and catapult. PLATFORM The Platform subteam designs and implements the software infrastructure that communicates between the plane's computer and the ground station. The ground server not only integrates data between the Autopilot and Vision subteams, but also uses a frontend to view mission-related information and images taken from the plane camera as well as to control various systems on the plane such as the camera, gimbal, and airdrop mechanisms. 7 THE COMPETITION WHAT WHERE WHO 18th Annual AUVSI/ONR SUAS Competition Patuxent River Naval Air Station Lexington Park, MD ~50 Teams from around the world WHEN June 2019 WHY Competition Mission Statement: The SUAS Competition, aimed at stimulating and fostering interest in unmanned air systems, technologies and careers, is focused on engaging students in a challenging mission. It requires the design, integration and demonstration of a system capable of conducting air operations to include autonomous flight, navigation of a specified course and use of onboard payload sensors. Additionally, students are required to submit technical journal papers and make oral presentations. 7

8 THE MISSION The AUVSI SUAS is broken down into three parts: Technical Journal Paper 15 page technical paper thoroughly describing the final UAS and discussing its underlying design rationale Judged on overall system engineering design, proven test data, and safety procedures 20% of total score Flight Readiness Review (FRR) 15 minute video presentation introducing flight line members, giving an overview of the system, outlining planned tasks and expected performance, and reporting results of developmental and mission testing Judged based on overall team and aircraft readiness for competition 20% of total score Mission Demonstration The team s UAS is deployed and must demonstrate the mission requirements Judged based on mission requirements execution (for full requirements, rules, or more information, please visit auvsi-suas.org). 60% of total score THE COMPETITION (cont d) 8

12 2019 AIR SYSTEM --Specifications Length 6 ft Weight 35.3 lb Wing Span 11.9 ft Min Speed 41 ft/s Turning Radius 49 ft Our 2019 competition plane (to be named) is a highly ambitious double-boom aircraft completely designed by CUAir. It is entirely made of carbon fiber and measures an enormous 12-foot wingspan, and is powered by two SCORPION SII KV motors each with its own 6-cell battery. This is the largest most ambitious airframe in CUAir history. It is manufactured using a female molded sandwich of carbon fiber, foam core, and fiberglass. It has the highest strength to weight ratio of any previous plane. It uses a twin prop, twin boom design with an H-tail resulting in the largest payload, stability, and efficiency yet. 12

13 OUTREACH Throughout the year, the Design and Operations team hosts events to spread STEM awareness and promote the team s message. CUAir also attends events and collaborates with other organizations to maximize audience reach. In the past, CUAir has collaborated with other project teams to host workshops for young students, presented demonstrations at the Sciencenter, attended start-up and technology conferenences, and presented on autonomous robotics at the Smithsonian National Air and Space museum. 13
