2 Collaborative project between Sheffield, Leeds & Southampton To investigate the feasibility of energy storage on different types of rail networks Sponsored by EPSRC ~ 1.5m

3 Trains and trams have frequent stop/starts Regenerated energy is often dumped as the network is unable to accept it Limited stop & high speed lines require higher energy braking Further electrification will only amplify these issues Typical suburban speed profile

4 Dumping unwanted regen energy creates big problems for certain networks Air conditioning for LU Some journeys are scheduled to minimise impact of electricity consumption Journeys may include sections of coasting or waiting

5 Use energy storage (batteries) to improve utilisation of regenerative energy Onboard or lineside? What type of system? Usage profile Battery technology? Cost Possibility to use vehicle to grid (V2G) Implications for stakeholders Users, train operators, electricity network, service providers, etc.

6 By 2020 it s predicted 1.2m EVs on the road in UK Many train/tram stations provide park n ride facilities Sheffield has 2350 spaces Wouldn t it be good if EVs could act as buffer for rail network!

Techno-economic supply chain analysis of energy storage technologies for application in UK rail and road transport Cost benefit analysis installation, operation maintenance Infrastructure installation/upgrade deferment 2. Optimising transport network operation for R2R energy exchange Investigate energy consumption and how storage may alter rail network operations Timetabling, coasting times, congestion, automation and driver controls

10 3. Power network simulation o Electricity supply stability o Usage profiles o Models coupled with WP2 for macro simulation 4. Versatile line-side storage demonstrator o Install at Network Rail Old Dalby Test Track o Design and implement energy storage system o Power converters, energy storage system (battery, super capacitor, flywheel) o Generate real-world data

Demonstrator data analysis and 2 nd - life EV battery o o o Fully examine behaviour of demonstrator Apply to other scenarios (e.g. different battery chemistry or energy storage system) Investigate suitability of 2 nd life EV batteries for this application using the Willenhall facility 6. Attractiveness to users and incentives for implementation o o Stakeholder perceptions (traveller to investor) Barriers to acceptance inc. (legislation)

R2R Communications, control and interfacing o Utilise existing and new V2G systems at Southampton for the R2R concept o Lab testing of existing EV battery packs at varying rates of charge/discharge to represent R2R operating regimes o Adapting existing BMS to accommodate net recharge whilst still facilitating R2R operation o Use the Willenhall facility to provide a battery-inthe-loop simulation of aggregated R2R carparks
