12 What applications can be motorized? Motorization is available for all types of window coverings and offers the following functions: Roller/Solar Shades The motor is completely concealed and won t interfere with the look of the room. 14 DISTRIBUTION Somfy is a component manufacturer of motors and controls. Motors are fabricated into various types of window coverings and are available through most window covering fabricators. Ordering motorized window coverings is similar to ordering manual window coverings and only requires some additional information. This guide provides you with the background needed to easily specify and order motorized window coverings through your suppliers. 15 How is the motorized window covering powered? Just as there is a choice in the type of application being motorized, there is also a choice in how the window covering is powered. This decision is based primarily on the user s preference but also depends on the motor used in the installation, as each motor type has specific power requirements. Somfy s family of motors are classified into three different power types to assist in choosing the best option for your project. For additional details regarding power, please reference the Understanding Power Section on page V Battery Tube (contains 8AA lithium batteries) and installed behind or above headrail. Battery (WireFree ) No wires to conceal No need for an electrician Motor is powered by extended life lithium batteries NOTE: All battery (WireFree ) motors can be converted into a plug-in motor with the addition of a transformer. Plug-in Outlet can be hidden behind valance as shown. 16 How is the motorized window covering controlled? What control type is preferred? In most projects, the motorized window covering(s) will be controlled by either a hand-held remote, a wall switch, a timer or all three. However there is a choice in the version of the hand-held remote or the wall switch that is used. This is determined by a number of factors including: the user s preference, the desired control option as well as the control technology. For more information reference the Understanding Controls Section on page 33. Below is an introduction to the factors that influence the decision. 17 UNDERSTANDING CONTROL OPTIONS Do you want to control the motorized window coverings individually, as a group or both individually and as a group? OPTION #1 Individual Control Separate motorized window coverings can be controlled independent of each other whether they are in the same room or if they are in different rooms. Somfy products allow users to control motorized window coverings individually, as a group or both individually and as a group. In order to choose the right version of either a hand-held remote, wall switch or both, the control option must be determined. An indepth explanation of each control option is available in the Understanding Controls Section on page 33. OPTION #2 Group Control Motorized window coverings can only be controlled as a group and will always raise and lower together. OPTION #3 Individual & Group Control Motorized window coverings can be controlled independent of each other or all together as a group. 13

18 UNDERSTANDING CONTROL TECHNOLOGY There are various types of control technologies available, each with its own features and benefits. In deciding among technologies, choose the one that offers the functionality needed for the project and the one that will work according to the user s preferences. However, note that not all technologies are always available. Typically, there is a choice, but it must be a technology that is compatible with the motor type being used in the installation. Throughout this guide, motors are typically displayed with their compatible technologies in order to simplify this process. See below for a snapshot of the three different control technologies. Additional information is available in the Understanding Controls section on page 33. How Does it Work? Simply press a button on a remote control or wall switch and window coverings move with ease. There is no need to point or aim the transmitter at the covering because Radio R Technology Somfy (RTS) is omni-directional. And just like a garage door opener, the radio waves travel through walls. 20 Somfy s Motor Ranges As you ve seen, there are choices in how to power and control motorized window coverings. Typically, there is also a choice in the actual motor that is being used in the installation. In most instances more than one motor is available to motorize the end product, however the motor that is specified will need to perform according to the user s preferences for power and control. Following is an overview of Somfy s basic motor ranges. As you follow the steps in the upcoming sections, you ll see a variety of these motors appear as compatible results for your specific application. Each time a motor is displayed as a result, it will also show its available control technologies and power options to simplify the decision-making process. WireFree Range The WireFree motor range consists of all motors that are battery powered. Each WireFree motor can also easily be converted to a plug-in motor with the addition of a transformer for maintenance-free operation. You ll recognize motors in this range because the motor name is always followed by WireFree. If a motor from the WireFree range is compatible with your end product, it will display as result in the corresponding end product section along with the icons that represent the compatible control technologies. 21 Standard Range The standard motor range consists of DC and AC motors. Depending on the actual installation, standard motors can either be plug-in or inwall wired. Standard motors available for your end product will display as results in the corresponding end product section along with the icons that represent the compatible control technologies. Because of the specific application use, they will only appear as results in the drapery end product section along with the icons that represent the compatible control technologies. 24 Using the Guide to Specify Motorized Window Coverings This reference guide allows you to easily specify motorized window coverings powered by Somfy by providing an easy step-by-step guide to finding your solution. The guide is organized in sections to help you easily find the information that you need. STEP 1: Choose your application Reference the section of the guide that corresponds with the end product that you are motorizing, whether it s a roller/solar shade, pleated/cellular shade, roman/woven shade, horizontal blind or drapery, Somfy offers a solution. Each end product section features weight charts to determine compatible motors based on your specific application. STEP 2: Identify your compatible motor and power source There may be multiple motor options compatible with your application. From the available options, choose the motor type that best suits your project needs and preferences. Each motor type is displayed with its available power options. The method that is used depends on a few different variables such as the number of motorized window coverings, the stage of your project etc. The power section provides a detailed explanation of the attributes of each power type so that you can choose the best option for your installation. Here s a brief explanation to get you started. 27 Example of the simple 3 step process Once you have a basic understanding of the differences in power options and control technologies, you can easily follow the steps in each end product section. Each end product section displays compatible motors based on the size and weight of the end product being motorized. The motors also display available power sources (battery/wirefree, plug-in, in-wall wired) and show the technologies that are available to control it. From there, you simply determine if you want to use a handheld control or wall switch and identify your choice by the desired control technology. STEP 1: Choose your application and reference the corresponding weight chart for your project This guide has a separate section for each end product type that can be motorized. Each end product section also has separate weight charts for the various types of that end product, choose the one that best represents the window covering that you are motorizing. 28 STEP 2: Identify compatible motor and power source The list of motors in the end product sections are organized by colors that correspond to the weight chart. After referencing the weight chart, refer to the section associated with the color(s) for your specific window covering. Each motor is also displayed with the available power options. STEP 3: Choose your control WIRED TECHNOLOGY INFRARED Each end product section will direct you to a specific controls area that will assist you in choosing the best control for you project. In order to determine the best option you first have to determine if you want a hand-held remote, wall switch, timer or all three. Next, you need to decide if you want to control the motorized window covering individually, as a group or both individually and as a group. Those choices will determine which area of the guide you need to reference to view your control choices. Once you reference the corresponding area, the controls are then organized by control technology: RTS, Infrared or Wired so that you can choose the technology best suited for your project preferences. Be sure to choose a control technology that is available for your motor solution. Each motor that is listed with the weight chart, is shown with icons that represent its compatible control technologies. 24
