28 The development of other gateway ports are also in the pipeline as part of PPA s continuing modernization effort.

29 To reinforce the port s role as gateways to hinterland areas, one of the priority programs of Philippine Ports Authority is the development of Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) ports and highways connecting them. The aim of the nautical highway system is to maximize the use of RORO system to transport products from the rural areas to urban centers with a reduce travel time and costs for passengers and cargoes.

36 There are ninety seven (97) PPA RoRo Ports nationwide, with a total of 213 existing RoRo ramps.

37 Economic gains have been recorded in connection with the intermodal road- RORO Terminal System (RRTS) connecting the whole Philippine Archipelago with a reduction travel time by around 12 hours and a reduction of transport cost by percent for passengers and percent for cargo.

38 As this seminar will help us address the challenges in the light of new trends emerging in the shipping sector, it will also assess our current state and performance that needs to be addressed to support our thrust toward global competitiveness and development goals as we envisioned for a safe, secure, efficient, viable, competitive, dependable, integrated, environmentally sustainable, and people oriented Philippine Transport System.
