3 Basic Instrument The Ducom Biotribometer is widely used as a precursor for joint implant simulators, mainly for fundamental research on biomaterials that replace biointerfaces in orthopedics and dentistry. Ducom Biotribometer (see Fig. 1) is equipped with sensors to measure the friction and compound wear of biomaterials while generating a clinically relevant conditions speed, motion and load profiles. For example, it can generate cross shear motion (see Figure 2) with a sliding speed and loading profiles in relationship with the gait cycles as per ISO or as per the description of ASTM F732-XX. Furthermore, it holds potential for designing and experimentation of new test methods relevant to wear rate and profiles observed on retrieved implants. 4 Functional Features Independent loading system for each station ( only for load up to 400 N) and fixed loading system for all the stations ( only for loads up to 3 kn) Automated motion control using the X-Y stage can generate six different motion profiles, including the cross shear motion types - elliptical, figure 8 and square. Addition of pin rotation to a sliding disk motion can generate a 2D motion profiles (sliding + rotation) and increase the cross shear intensity. Temperature control of the lubricants in each station up to 70 deg C. 5 Principle of Operation Ducom Biotribometer is comprised of a top plate (fixed frame) and a bottom plate (X Y stage), as shown in Figure 3. Top plate carries the loading system, either the servo-driven system for a load up to 400 N or the hydraulic power pack system for a load up to 3000 N. The load is transmitted through a spindle and pin/ball holder on to the disk. Here, the pin/ball can be fixed or rotated about its axis Figure 3. In the load system of 400 N, for each station, there are two friction force sensors (button type load cell) attached to the base plate and it acquires friction force along the X and Y axis. Furthermore, in the top plate, a linear variable transducer (LVDT) is mounted on the spindle cup connected to the pin/ball holders to acquire the compound wear (or linear wear). The bottom plate, carrying the fluid chamber along with the disk is heated by a pair of cartridge heaters. Thermocouples are used to measure periodically the temperature of the fluid inside of each chamber. Please note that the loading system, motion system (X-Y stage), pin rotation and lubricant temperature are computer controlled. Also, the measurements from the friction force and LVDT sensors are displayed in realtime using the WinDucom software. 6 User Convenience Modular system: Depending on the available budget the system can be upgraded to avail new functional features. Optionals can be purchased at once or upgraded over time. Single platform with multiple solutions: Biotribometer with gait load cycle profile is used for testing orthopedic biomaterials and the same platform can generate chewing load cycles for testing dental biomaterials. High throughput research: Six stations in the biotribometer can be used to test 12 different biomaterials, simultaneously. Advantages over a simulator: In biotribometer, it is possible to acquire friction and wear during the test, and as a function of different degrees of freedom sliding or sliding + rotation. This is not possible in the simulators that is available in the market. Automation: Only the pin and disk samples have to mounted manually whereas the rest of the operations loading, motion & speeds are software controlled. Instrument control and Data acquisition The Ducom Biotribometer is controlled by labview based WinDucom software that also acquires and displays the normal load, friction force, friction coefficient, wear, and lubricant temperature. The raw data are also measured and displayed. Acquired data can be presented in several ways. Graphs of individual test can be printed.
