TECHNOLOGY CLASSES Welcome to a new semester. Listed below are guidelines that each of you will need to follow to ensure a successful class. Thank you and have a wonderful semester! Class Rule: DO WHAT IS RIGHT!! Plain and simple. Just Do It! Consequences for breaking the class rule: 1. Warning and a 3 point deduction. 2. Detention 3. Office Referral Your grade will be based on: 50% Tests, Written Work, Projects 50% Affective Grade (Following Directions) 100% Kim Morris: Affective point deductions. Each 9 weeks a student will start out with 100 points. You will receive 3 points per day. If you are in school, you will keep the points. But if you are out of school, you will not get the points. The affective point system is based on following directions. Since this is a lab based classroom, it is crucial to the student s safety that they follow directions at all times. I am also tying to prepare students for the workforce and this system is important to workers on the job. A student will have 3 points deducted each time they: 1. Do not follow directions. 2. Do not participate in class. 3. Are not prepared for class (Paper, pencil, etc.) 4. Are horseplaying. 5. Are disrespectful. 6. Talk when others are talking. 7. Abuse lab equipment. 8. Come to class tardy. 9. Are absent from class. A student will have one free absence per 6 weeks in which they will not have a 3 point deduction. Students will not lose points if they have a medical note or it is a school related absence.
Technology Advanced Studies What is required this semester? During this semester, you need to be here every day in order to get your daily grade. During each day you need to work on the projects listed below. In order to receive a 100 every day, you must let me see you working. All of these projects require problem solving and persistence. You will need to search the internet for ideas. Do not give up. Keep trying. 1. Mousetrap car. Must come close to 10 meters. Three cars will compete at SCC for the Tech Prep Fun Fest in April. 2. Dream Home. Follow your specification sheet. 3. Bottle rockets Research this project and follow your specification sheet. Three rockets can compete SCC. 4. Career paper, project and Presentation. Written in 1 st person. 3 pages typed. 3 sources, one must be an interview. Font 14, top and bottom margin, 1 inch: left and right margins 1.25 inches. Font style, times new roman. Choose a career, write the paper, include a product to support your career and present it to the class. 5. A project of your choice. Talk to me about your project to get approval. 6. DOT Regional and State Competition. You must help with the competition. Specification sheet included. Regional is in March and the State competition is in April. 7. Sandhills Tech Prep Fun Fest: You must compete in an event in April. 8. Rubber Band Airplane. Follow your specification sheet. Three planes will be competing at SCC During any class period, the teacher has the right to change her mind and start a project that is completely off the wall. Get Ready and be willing to try new and crazy ideas. If you are taking this class as an honors class, you will need to choose another project in addition to what is listed above. All projects need to be completed. Projects will be graded according to a rubric or if the project is a timed event or a distance event, then the grade will depend on the individual student s project. All projects are due one week before exams begin, unless they are competing in an event. You cannot graduate with an incomplete on your report card. Do not get lazy on me!!!!!!!! The exam in this class is a teacher made exam and it will be essay questions that relate to the projects done during the semester.
If you are absent from school, it is your responsibility to ask me (Kim Morris) what you missed. Please remember to do this so zeros will not be added to your grades. You will have 3 school days to make up missed work. Zeros will be written down on the 4 th school day after you return to school. Curriculum guides can be found at All students who have no more than 2 Absences and 3 Tardies in a class will be EXEMPT from the REVIEW SESSION afternoon for that class. Exempted students will be exempt from the final quiz during that session and will not be required to attend, but may attend if they so desire. Please understand that the 2 ABSENCES and 3 TARDIES are for the ENTIRE Semester and include both EXCUSED AND UNEXCUSED (so 3 doctor appointments in a single class would mean you cannot be exempt) and there will be no waivers or exceptions to the policy. Although the exemption from review session is not linked to a grade, teachers will contact parents of those students who are failing, or in danger of failing, to let them know that students who may be exempt based on absences and tardies should still be encouraged to attend the review in an effort to try to pass the course. Moore County Schools is committed to equal opportunity in education and employment and does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, ethnic origin, or handicapping condition (Title VI, Civil Rights Act of 1964
I understand that I must complete, to the best of my ability, ALL of the projects in Technology Advanced Studies. If I do not finish the projects, Mrs. Morris will not sign my graduation check off sheet. Choosing not to complete a project is NOT an option, even if I don t need this class to graduate. 5 Mousetrap Car Competition The Mousetrap Car Competition Rules The Mousetrap Vehicle A. Introduction Transportation is a major industry. Technologies are being developed to improve the efficiency of transportation as well as reduce the cost of transporting goods. B. The Problem Design a wheeled vehicle which uses a standard mousetrap as its only source of propulsion. The vehicle will have to travel a distance of exactly 10 meters. C. Specifications Materials include one standard mousetrap and any other materials the designer would like to include. All energy must come from the mousetrap spring. This energy can be converted into other forms or used to multiply force. It is illegal to use other stored energy forms. For example, using a rubber band that is stretched before the mousetrap is sprung. The instructor has final the decision as to the appropriateness of a material. The mousetrap must be sprung with a device other than your hands. All vehicles must be self starting. Vehicles which do not meet the preceding criteria will be disqualified. D. The Competition A maximum of 10 entries will be allowed per school. Individual entries, or teams of 2 are allowed. Each participant will have two attempts to achieve the 10 meter mark. The best of the two attempts will be recorded for judging. To determine a winner, the distance from the center of the finish block to the front center of the car will be measured. MOUSETRAP CAR GUIDELINES 1. Vehicles must be self-contained, use only one mousetrap of any brand. Use a standard mousetrap to build the car (no rat traps allowed). No modifications of the mouse trap spring are allowed. Arm extensions are allowed. 2. The mousetrap spring must be the only source of stored energy for powering the car. No elastic bands of any kind may be used to help power the car. 3. Rubber bands may be used for traction on the wheels. 4. The car must be set at the start of the race, and the car must be able to start ITSELF after the tripping of the mouse
trap. No push or pull from the designer(s) is allowed. Students must design a trip mechanism which meets the race rules. Race Rules 1. The car will be raced on a smooth flat surface. 2. The student will be allowed to run the car twice with the best single performance used for the competition. 3. Adjustments between runs are allowed.
The John O'Brien Balsa Wood Airplane Competition Rules RUBBER MOTOR-POWERED MONOPLANE Participants will construct and test a rubber motor-powered, propeller driven monoplane in advance of the competition All contestants will launch simultaneously. The last three planes flying will be declared winners. The longest time aloft will decide the overall winner. All efforts will be made to fly the airplanes in the Sandhills Community College gym. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: There is a limit of 10 planes per school. TIME: Minutes A rubber motor-powered, propeller-driven airplane may be constructed from published plan(s), commercial kit and/or a student's design as long as the following specifications are satisfied: 1. Total mass of the airplane without the motor will be 10 grams or more. 2. Maximum horizontally projected wing span of 50 cm, maximum wing cord (straight line distance from leading edge of wing to trailing edge) 12 cm, maximum horizontally projected stabilizer span of 35 cm. Use the 50 cm to 12 cm ratio to determine the maximum stabilizer cord. Kits may be purchased and modified to meet these requirements. 3. Use a single two blade commercially molded (one-piece) plastic propeller with a maximum diameter of 20 cm. Longer props may be trimmed to meet this specification. Trimming/shaving is also permitted to balance and/or reduce the mass of propeller or to change its pitch. 4. The plane will be powered by a single loop rubber motor (which may include one knot) not to exceed a mass of 2 grams. Mass will include o-rings and will be massed separately from the plane. Motors may be lubricated before and/or after check in. 5. The plane must be marked in such a way as to be easily identified by the event supervisor.
Ron Currie Bottle Rocket Competition DESCRIPTION Participants will design, construct and launch one bottle rocket made from a 2 liter or less plastic pop (soda) bottle which will remain aloft for a maximum periods of time. The 2 or less liter plastic pop (soda) bottle must fit on a one-half inch PVC pipe. Check your bottle prior to building your rocket!!! The COMPETITION Teams will consist of up to 2 students. Schools may enter up to 10 teams. Teams will have approximately 10 minutes to prepare and launch their rockets. 1. Students will bring 2 liter or less plastic pop (soda) bottle rocket to the tournament. The 2 liter or less plastic pop (soda) bottle must fit on a one-half inch PVC pipe. Check your bottle prior to building your rocket!!! No commercially finished or model products maybe used. Students should place their name, school and division on the rockets. 2. The body of the rocket must consist of one or more plastic 2 liter or less pop bottles. No more than one bottle can be pressurized at any time. No metal parts will be allowed on the rocket. 3. All energy imparted to the rocket must originate from the water/air pressure combination provided by the judges. No other potential or kinetic source of energy will be permitted. 4. Timing of the rocket stops when the first part of the rocket hits the ground, or when the rocket disappears from the judge s sight, or when the rocket impacts or gets entangled in an object (i.e. the rocket collides with a tree.) 5. AII rockets will be launched at an equal pressure, approximately 65 psi. 6. The contestant will be allowed to add their desired amount of water to the rocket from the supply provided by the judges. 7. Though various rocket components may separate during the flight, all must remain linked together with a maximum distance not to exceed three (3) meters. If a nose cone is used, it can separate but must remain attached to the rocket body. If any part of the rocket becomes unattached, the rocket will be ranked below all rockets that remain attached. 8. The students will launch the rocket using the launching pad provided by the supervisor. The judges will time the rocket's flight. 9. Caution: No materials will be allowed that can compromise the integrity of the plastic bottles (i.e. hot glues or super glues). Sanding or other abrasion of the plastic used for the pressurized body of the rocket is not allowable. Students should wear safety goggles when launching rockets. SCORlNG: The best score of two rocket launches will be recorded. The winning rocket will be determined by the greatest time aloft (recorded to the nearest hundredth of a second). Should parts of the rocket fall off during the flight, the rocket will be ranked in order behind all rockets whose parts remained attached.
