Conforms well to uneven flange surfaces. Durometer 75 + or 10/-5. Tensile Strength 400 psi. Temperature -20 F to 175 F. PURE GUM RUBBER Natural rubber used for high abrasion and resiliency applications. Conforms to irregular flanges. Resists most organic salts, acids, alkalis and ammonia. Not recommended for ozone or oil resistance. Durometer 40 + or 5. Temperature -20 F or 150 F. Tensile strength 2000 psi. Elongation 600%. HYPALON Hypalon is highly resistant to most acids and other corrosives. It is most commonly used as a covering in soil burial as it is unaffected by soil chemical and moisture. Used in sealing oils, gasoline, greases, water and air. Temperature to 250 F. Tensile strength 2000 psi. PLANT FIBRE/RUBBER CS-301 Made from cellulose fibre, cork and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR). A tendency to swell moderately without disintegrating in water or oil makes this fibre sheet a dependable seal in services not involving aromatic fuels and solvents. Temperature to 300 F. Its unique formulation features a blend of binders that, while resistant to most fluids, generate sufficient expansion to provide superior sealing characteristics in harsh operating conditions. Unlike conventional packings, T-500 does not employ a liquid lubricant, thus reducing packing shrinkage and the resulting need for constant gland adjustment. Because of its unique fiber and lubricant, T-500 s sealability is exceptionally high, allowing the use of lighter gland pressure to achieve the same degree of sealing found in conventional packings. Lighter gland pressure results in lower packing pressure against the shaft or sleeve, causing a substantial decrease in frictional drag, frictional heat and wear on both shaft and packing. This leads to extended life, reduced fluid loss, lower down-time and increased efficiency (machinery runs cooler with reduced energy consumption). 58 O-RINGS & O-RING MATERIALS O-RING MATERIAL DESCRIPTIONS NBR (NITRILE, BUNA) HNBR, HSN -40 F to 250 F -40 F to 320 F Presently the seal industry s most widely used elastomer. Nitrile combines excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels, silicone grease, hydraulic fluids, water and alcohol. It has a good balance of working properties such as low compression set, high tensile strength, and high abrasion resistance, combined with a low cost. A nitrile compound with excellent resistance to petroleum oils and sour gas. HSN has excellent wear, low compression set and good chemical resistance while maintaining a good temperature range. HSN is becoming a more preferred compound in the oilfield industry. TFEP (Aflas) FKM (Viton) -20 F to 400 F -15 F to 400 F Aflas is a unique fluoroelastomer, a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and propylene. It has shown excellent resistance to petroleum oils, steam, hydrogen sulfide and amine corrosion inhibitors, It has show excellent heat and chemical resistance. Due to its resistance to sour gas and steam it has found numerous applications in the oilfield industry for chemical injection pumps, downhole oilfield packer elements and numerous other sealing applications. Featuring excellent resistance to petroleum products and solvents, with good high temperature and low compression set characteristics. For use with wide chemical exposure situations, and low gas permeability. The family of Viton materials and uses are as follows: A general service Viton used for many chemical applications. B - shows improved resistance in aqueous inorganic acids. F/GF for use in hot water, steam and has improved acid resistance (vs B) ETP-Extreme strong bases, polar solvents most chemical resistant. GLT exhibits best low temperature capability. GFLT exhibits low temperature and chemical Pg

59 O-RINGS & O-RING MATERIALS EPDM, EPR PTFE TEFLON -65 F to 300 F -65 F to 500 F Ethylene propylene has excellent ozone and chemical resistance characteristics. Although it is resistant to hydrogen sulfide it is not compatible with hydrocarbons and therefore has seen limited applications in the oilfield. It is also excellent for steam applications. PTFE has found numerous uses in oilfield applications, as it is the most chemical resistant thermoplastic available. If offers low friction and sealability not found with most plastic materials, however it is subject to cold flow or creep. Adding fillers such glass, moly, carbon and bronze can reduce this creep. PTFE is used for valve seats, stem packing, pump packing, downhole tools, bearing rings and spacer rings. CR (Neoprene) Fluorosilicone -65 F to 250 F -80 F to 400 F Neoprene has the unique combination of resistance to weathering as well as resistance to petroleum lubricants within its temperature capabilities. It also has good resistance to flexing and tear. It has limited service in the oilfield applications due to lack of chemical and thermal resistance. Fluorosilicone combines the excellent high and low temperature properties of silicone, but has a much better resistance to a wider variety of fluids. Fluorosilicones are commonly used in aircraft fuel systems Silicone -80 F to 450 F Silicone possesses an excellent resistance to temperature extremes. Most commonly used in static applications due to its poor tear and abrasion resistance.
