The sky is black from the smoke given out by the two locomotives climbing the grade enroute to Athens, Georgia where the Gainesville Midland interchanges with the Seaboard, March Photo # 965 Photo 1 Coal Operations Note: The coaling tower and sanding operations for the Georgia Midland during steam days were done at Belmont right out in the open for God and everybody to witness. Belmont was the former unction for t he line to Winder and Monroe, Georgia. Coaling operations consisted of loading coal from rail hopper cars on an elevated track into manual hoppers that were then pushed by man power up to the edge of the platform alongside the Gainesville Midland s mainline. Photo # 968 Photo 1 Sanding Operations Adding sand to Gainesville Midland locomotives consisted of getting buckets of sand from the sand house, and then walking the plank to the locomotive s sand dome to fill the dome. Enough buckets required to fill the dome were emptied into it with complete supervision to make certain that it was full. On rainy days care had to be taken to keep the sand dry as it would take a while for the heat of the boiler to dry it out enough to go through the tubing to the tracks on the days it was need the worse.
