1 President Bob Demola Vice President Joe Mauriello Secretary Neil Stokes Treasurer Brian Beer Date June 7, 2017 Editor JJ DeLucia AMA Charter # 729 Web site - Flying Field: Boodys Mill Road GPS: Minutes of the West Jersey R/C Club May 9, 2017 The May Business Meeting was called to order by Secretary Neil Stokes at 8:02 pm with 22 members in attendance. The minutes from the April meeting were read by the Secretary and accepted by all present. Treasurer Brian Beer gave the balance on the Bank of America checking account of zero dollars. The new TD Bank account balance was given as of April 30 th. Brian said that the bank switch has now been completed. The TD Bank account does not have any fees attached for non-profit organizations and is more convenient for hours and accessibility. There were no new members present and the club is still at 69 members. The Field Committee did not have any issues to report; the runway and field are in good shape. Field Safety Officer Owen Douglass and Field Marshal Gregg Clement said the field has had no issues on safety. Old Business Brian Beer and Neil Stokes have set-up the new checking account with TD Bank. TD Bank does not have any fees or minimum balances for non-profit originations and offers better hours of operation. Joe Albanese made the suggestion of possibly using the Gloucester County Library for holding our meetings. Neil Stokes visited the Library to gather more info on this. The meeting room is available to non-profit originations one time per month. If we were to use the library, our start time for the meetings would need to be moved to an earlier time due to the meeting needing to end, the room cleaned up and put back the way we found it by 8:30 pm. Neil also spoke to the meeting room coordinator to check the available dates we hold our meetings; there were no dates available for the rest of this year. Neil contacted the American Legion to see if, we were to hold only one meeting per month, there would be any savings. They offered the hall at $500 / year for a meeting once a month. After much discussion, this will be tabled until next month s meeting. Joe Albanese is taking orders for S&W Fuel; if you want fuel, contact him for your order and payment. Joe Mauriello was not available to give any more info on the Morgan Fuel purchase. Spring Ducted Fan is scheduled for Saturday May 13 th ; however, the weather is not looking good. The rain date for this event is set for the following Saturday May 20 th due to May 14 th being Mother s Day. Multi-Engine Sunday is on May 21 st. Neil asked how many members actually read the Newsletter when it comes out, everyone present said they did. The reason asked is JJ DeLucia puts about 15 hours a month into the letter with the minutes, club up dates, tech tips, website links and a lot of pictures of planes and members. The membership present said to not change anything and continue as is. Thank you JJ! New Business The Warbirds event is Sunday June 11 th and there will be food available if we can find someone to do the prep and cooking for that day. Neil will send out an regarding this. JJ said he got a suggestion from Paul Gross regarding expenses for coffee and donuts at the Bull Meetings; this is something that cost the club about $400 a year, is it really needed? The suggestion was also made to eliminate the prize money for the Plane of the Quarter and the prize of a free membership at the end of the year. After some discussion it was determined to leave everything as it is and continue with meetings as they are twice a month, keep coffee and donuts as well as the Plane of the Quarter and free dues prizes. Sheldon Parker said that we need to make a budget and present it to the members; he offered his help to get with Brian Beer and work on a budget starting in November. The next Bull Meeting is May 23 rd and the Next Business Meeting is June 13 th. 2 West Jersey Wind 2 Unusual & Dangerous Engine Event: (Jack Hofbauer sent me the below in an . Ed.) Don't take anything for granted: I had something quite shocking happen to me at the field the other day after completing my final flight for the day. This has NEVER happened to me in over 50+ years in the hobby. This occurred with my YAK 54 powered by an OS.46 AX engine (photo right). I pumped the fuel tank completely dry then ran the engine to burn out any remaining fuel in the lines. When everything was cooled down I removed the glow plug and squeezed a good shot of my after run oil (Marvel Mystery Oil) down the plug hole into the cylinder, turned the engine over slowly by hand to disperse the oil, then inserted the glow plug. I then opened the carb barrel and squeezed another good shot of the Marvel Oil down into the carb throat and again rotated the engine slowly by hand to disperse the oil in the lower end and crankcase area. I always use this same procedure and have done this for years. I hate replacing bearings due to corrosion! Anyhow, I closed the carb down to about 1/2 throttle and started hand flipping the prop to really distribute the Marvel Oil throughout the engine. All of a sudden, to my surprise the engine started and began to run - with the glow plug igniter unconnected and laying on the bench - and ran for a couple of seconds before shutting off. I'm glad I did this at the field and the airplane was restrained by the flight stand it was sitting on. I usually do this entire procedure when I return home and the airplane is just sitting on my work stand with no restraints. It could have caused a serious injury. Once again, I have never in all these years had an engine start running without the glow plug igniter attached to the plug. This engine is getting broken-in and does have great compression and, with the after run oil adding more compression, it apparently acted like a diesel engine and fired up on the heat of compression. From now on I will keep a good grip on the prop when turning the engine over. Be aware, many strange things can happen in this hobby; that's what makes it so interesting. A rare disease called Powassan is spread by deer ticks, the same tick that carries Lyme disease. Powassan attacks the nervous system, affecting: memory, thinking and balance - and it can be deadly. About 10-15% of those who get infected have a life-long neurological condition afterwards. Unlike Lyme disease, there is no treatment for Powassan. PA and NJ are among the states with cases of it. If you go into woods or high grass, be sure to wear insect repellent with DEET and thoroughly check yourself afterwards. Also, be sure to protect/check your pets. Available from many outlets including: Walmart, HomeDepot, Amazon, etc. PN-81002R/ Video of how it works: Jay Honigman's 33" (52" long) Freewing F-5. Its 80mm 12-blade fan made it quick and gave a real nice turbine sound to it. Sheldon Parker taxi-tested his new 72" Cessna 421, powered with Hobby King G-60 motors (rated at 1500watts each). Each motor was powered with a 6S 5,000 mah Lipo and Turnigy 85 amp ESC. These ESCs come with "on/off" switches. That's a nice safety feature. If You Walk Onto the Runway: Those on the flight line are paying close attention to their aircraft and little else. Make a loud, clear announcement before entering onto the runway. Be sure you are heard. While on the runway, listen for warnings and to the planes aloft, while watching up and down the runway. Be especially attentive for possible calls of "dead-stick" (You won't hear the plane coming.) If you must enter onto the runway, the best thing to do is to ask someone in the Pits to watch out for you. This is especially the case if your hearing is less than perfect.

4 West Jersey Wind 4 Portable Generator Info: We're seeing more and more electric aircraft. Along with having an electric, is having enough batteries - and, the big ones can get rather costly. A way of minimizing the number of batteries you need is with a portable generator; a few WJRC members have them. Gregg Clement has a 1,000 watt, 2-cycle generator. It runs with little more than a whisper of noise. As Gregg described some of its specs to me, he pointed out that it has an inverter. The inverter allows it to deliver a clean, stable charge voltage; so, there's much less chance of damaging any electronics connected to the battery from voltage spikes or current surges. As with many other things, there's a wide range of prices and, of course, you get what you pay for. Link for Gregg's generator: Gasoline-Powered-Digital-Inverter-Generator / Gregg mounted a standard multi-outlet strip on his generator and plugged it into its 120VAC outlet. Rick Lawn's 61" Carl Goldberg Eagle 2, powered with a Magnum XLS 46. Paul Gross' 71" Phoenix Models, Ryan STA was shown on the bench in last month's newsletter. Here's another shot of it, but not because of it's another pretty face - check out the 2nd photo below. While prepping the above photo, I noticed a "just in case" item on Paul's plane. The below blow-up shows that the exhaust extender has come off the muffler...but didn't go far. Recently, Karl manufactured a custom canopy for his plane from a water bottle; and, he wanted to share some of the info. He'd sent me the below in an along with the photos back on March 3. I apologize for taking so long to get it out to the club. Because it's going to so many, I reduced the format of the photos to ease downloading. I like the open cockpit look better anyway. Seriously, been wanting to try this for awhile; maybe next time will go for the full canopy. Did learn to flip the template from one side to the next (it was slightly off center). It caused the form to be a little crooked. Also, to use regular spackling compound. Vinyl spackling gets upset with the heat gun and starts to melt. But, it came out like a molded part. Now getting it attached will be the next challenge. Soon there won t be any excuse not to fly!
