3 1. Introduction Koseq, based in Puttershoek, The Netherlands, is the inventor and market leader in the field of Rigid Sweeping Arm Systems. Koseq has sold to date more than 70 different systems to the Coast Guards of; The Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Turkey, EMSA, US response and salvage companies including international dredging companies and local authorities. Most of these systems are permanent installed on oil recovery vessels. Other systems are mobile units, they are stored ashore and are ready for immediate use by appointed and dedicated oil recovery vessels. The Koseq Rigid Sweeping Arm Systems are well proven systems, they are able to perform in harsh sea conditions and have proven reliability and efficiency during oil recovery operations such as the disasters with the following vessels: the Prestige, Sea Empress, Erika, Gulf War, Gulf of Mexico and others. EMSA, the European Maritime Safety Agency has listed and witnessed this in their independent report dealing with the oil recovery operation following on the wrecking of the Prestige fuel oil tanker in Northern Spain and the corresponding oil recovery of the very viscous fuel oil. Only vessels equipped with Koseq Rigid Sweeping Arm Systems, like the Arca, Rijndelta and Neukerk are able to recover substantial quantities of heavy oil from sea in harsh weather conditions. Brief history of Koseq Due to increased oil transport by tankers worldwide and the first large oil spill disaster of the Torrey Canyon 1967, the Dutch government aimed and decided to develop an effective tool capable of removal of large quantities oil from the seawater surface. In 1968, the first steps were taken and a cooperation was established between Rijkswaterstaat, TNO and Van der Sluijs & Kampers, and resulted in the design and construction of the initial prototype of the rigid sweeping arm. The demand for gradually improved rigid sweeping arms was growing worldwide. The company Koseq, with the heritage of Doseq was founded in Nowadays, the Koseq company is the world leader in rigid oil sweep equipment and contributed in a large number of oil spills. Koseq supplied a large quantity of rigid sweeping arm systems. In 2010, Koseq was involved in the oil spill recovery of the Deep Horizon spill at the Mexican gulf. A total of 22 sweeping arm systems were supplied. Koseq assisted clients with the installation of the equipment and the know how for recovery of oil from sea. 5 3. Innovations Still even after many years of development, the research department of Koseq is continuous working to improve there products and keep them up to date. In the earlier days, research was achieved by trial and error via building prototypes. The prototypes were tested mounted on ships or with scale tests in test tanks. Nowadays sophisticated CFD computer programs are used, this dedicated software is capable of calculating and optimizing the flow pattern of the sweeping arm before an actual prototype is built. Hereafter, the prototype is tested in practice and its performance is evaluated. This design method gives maximum flexibility to the design process and guarantees optimal performance of the sweeping arms. Real world evaluation (actual oil recovery) is used as direct feedback to our design process. New developments are high on our priority list as well; transportable and versatile systems, easy to mobilise, they can be used on a wide range of vessels and under most severe conditions. In addition to the original design of the rigid sweeping arms, new systems such as the Compact Rigid Sweeping arm and the Victory Oil Sweeper were designed and developed and tested accordingly. This dictates that simplicity of sweeping arm systems is preferred above technical complexity. The oil recovery systems are often stored for longer periods, it is crucial that systems can be deployed immediately, with untouched and predictable reliability after a spill has occurred. Long term and durable performance is obtained by selection of available technologies, mechanical and hydraulic techniques are favorite, they are proven to be reliable and hardly sensitive to wear and tear. The nearly exponential demand of relative cheap and constant available energy to meet the growing demand to fulfil the countries in development such as China, India, Brazil and many other countries challenges the oil companies to search for and to explore new discovered deposits in environmental sensitive areas. To follow this trend, Koseq is exceptional focused on research and development of new methods and technologies to combat and to control oil spills in the extreme conditions such as they occur in deep sea conditions and the arctic and vulnerable areas. Our current portfolio includes a wide range of oil sweep equipment, additional equipment and tailor made oil recovery solutions. Koseq is able to offer expertise and consultancy related to oil sweep equipment, system integration, fluid dynamics and oil recovery technology.

6 4. Basics of rigid sweeping arm The specific gravity of oil is in general (much) lower as the specific gravity of water. Spilled oil spreads out over the sea surface in a thin layer. Such a thin layer of oil is very hard to separate from the under laying seawater, in particular in turbulent sea conditions. Koseq found a very effective way for oil spill removal Movement of a vertical plane at a desired speed through a seawater column with a small oil layer on top forces the oil molecules to intensify thereby increasing the oil layer thickness substantially in front of the vertical plane. The oil from a much thicker layer can be separated from seawater based on existing density difference technology. This principle is found most effective and is grateful imitated by our competitors. With design improvements resulting from continuous research and many practical applications since 1968, Koseq remains the leader in its field. It has an extensive track record, proving it to deliver the optimum tool to combat oil spills. The Koseq rigid sweeping arm is a versatile mechanical oil recovery system. It is designed for virtually any type of propelled vessel but also can be used in stationary applications. The top layer of oil and water is picked up by the skirts mounted on the arm structure barrier and guided towards the separation and oil recovery unit equipment. The mixture of most oil but also some water is pumped to a storage tank or hopper where the oil is separated from the water by gravity. In this way, it can be preferably installed on existing tank ships, this without the need of extensive adaptations or modifications. 7 The Koseq rigid sweeping arm is provided with a fixed sweeping fence with a built in weir type skimmer and pumping equipment. The sweeping arm is able to recover any type of surface pollutant with a lower density than water, the particle size does not obstruct the pump suction inlet. A remotely controlled self-cleaning debris screen is standard provided to remove debris such as seaweeds, wood, cans, dirt, etc. A compact hydraulically powered submersible pump is located in the separation and oil recovery unit.this pump transfers the recovered mixture to a tank or hopper onboard the vessel. The pump combines low weight with a large capability and has a conical high speed Archimedes screw to handle high viscosity oils even with viscosities over cst. Although the system uses water as a lubricating transport medium for extremely viscous oils, there is still a low percentage of water in the oil- water mixture present. The system is very flexible in terms of deployment, capacity and the operating simplicity. 8 5. The compact sweeping arm For the use on smaller vessels, Koseq developed a new version of the rigid sweeping arm: the Compact sweeping arm. This type is shorter and lighter than the standard rigid sweeping arm. A small footprint enables the unit to store and perform on small vessels and to facilitate transportation by trucks and aircrafts. This makes this type compact sweep arm extremely suited for situations were quick oil recovery is required. Moving through the oil spill, the oil is guided by the Rigid Sweeping Arm skirts and forced to flow to the collection and separation chamber. The hydraulic submersible pump is directly placed behind the height adjustable weir bar and pumps the oil/water mixture directly to the storage tanks onboard the vessel. The pump, the height adjusted weir bar and the debris screen, are remotely operated by only one man. The Compact Rigid Sweeping arm is equipped with a pump in the oil collection chamber for recovery and discharging the oil to the ship. The Sepia recovering oil in the harbor of Rotterdam This compact sweeping arm is delivered in several sizes, and the basic function is similar to the other sweeping arm systems. A compact sweeping arm is mostly used for the recovery of oil from rivers, estuaries and deltas, but the system can also be used in offshore conditions. 9 6. The victory sweeping arm A total new concept has been designed with all the advantages of our proven Koseq rigid sweeping arm but an even more flexible system: the Victory Oil Sweeper. This sweeping arm is symmetric designed and is configured around two floating adjustable arm sections with an adjustable angle, equipped with a centre positioned floatation section with integrated oil collection chamber. The major advantage of this type is that beside trailing alongside the vessel, this sweeping arm can also be pushed by a tug boat in front of the tug. Another advantage is that the arm can be trailed on both port- and starboard side of the vessel. These configurations increases the flexibility of the system substantially and enables a wide range of vessels that can be utilised for recovery of oil spills from rivers, estuaries, deltas and offshore. The victory oil sweeper trailed alongside a vessel The advantages of the Victory sweeping arm are: In addition to the standard towed configurations, this sweeping arm can also be operated pushing it in front of a tug, tanker or other type of vessel. The arms are foldable, relative less space on deck is required related to the existing rigid sweeping arm systems. Exchangeable collection chamber with different skimmer types (weir, brush, belt, etc.). 10 7. Additional equipment Beside delivery of sweeping arms, Koseq also supplies a wide range of additional equipment for ships integration. This includes all the components required to modify a standard tanker vessel into dedicated oil recovery vessel. Koseq supplies a wide range of hydraulic powerpacks for the hydraulic power supply of the sweeping arms. The power packs can be built under several classes. Handling of the sweeping arm is one of the most critical aspects for deployment of systems at open sea. Koseq designed and fabricates dedicated handling cranes for the launch and recovery of sweeping arms. These cranes are equipped with catchers that keep the sweeping arm in position during manouvring the arm overboard and lowering the arm to thesea surface.
