This school was established in 1936 and is the oldest boatbuilding school in the U.S. The Wagner was commissioned by the Board of The Center for Wooden Boats. 15 The Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival, hosted by the Center for Wooden Boats, convenes 150 classic boats, nautical craft demonstrations and skill workshops, as well as musical showbills and salmon bakes for a three day Fourth of July celebration. From May to September wooden boat festivals are held in Portland, Oregon, Olympia, Washington, Seattle, Washington, Vancouver, British Columbia, Victoria, British Columia, and Port Townsend Washington. 19 Virginia V, a 1922, 125 passenger vessel, is the sole survivor of Puget Sound s Mosquito Fleet of privately owned ferries. This National Historic Landmark was restored by a non-profit foundation, which charters it for social and educational events. Seattle-based Zodiac spends much of its time as a sail training vessel. Cedar and fir have been crafted into a fascinating flotilla of fishing boats and coastal steamers, motor and sailing yachts. Getting on the water in a wooden boat is the Northwest s soul tonic. Seattle s Lake Union is home port for the floating Center for Wooden Boats, a living heritage museum where people learn by doing. An extensive rental fleet allows members and visitors to pick up the oars and row a classic boat, pick up the tiller and sail one, or pick up the tools and build a replica.
