2 General Information The club is a not-for-profit Kansas corporation, dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of all Chevelles and El Caminos. Ownership of a Chevelle or associated vehicle is not required. Club newsletters which include minutes of meetings, upcoming events, and technical articles are also found on club s website and are forwarded to members. Business meetings are convened on the last Thursday of each month, with the possible exceptions of November and December, for the purpose of discussing and planning future club events. The meetings begin at 7:00 p.m., at Superior Chevrolet, 8300 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Merriam, Kansas unless otherwise noted in the newsletter or on the club s website. Members may advertise vehicles/parts for sale, trade, or wanted in the newsletter for no charge. 3 August 26, 2010 Meeting Minutes The August 26, 2010 meeting was called to order by Chair Roger Verstraete at 7:00 p.m. at Superior Chevrolet, Mission, KS. Two new members were introduced followed by the introduction of longer term members present. The July meeting minutes were approved as presented in the newsletter. Shirts and other various apparel items were reported as received and ready for distribution. New orders will still be accepted and coordinated by Roger Verstraete. Debra Gragg reported there are currently 42 pre-registered cars for the September show. She also read a letter sent in with one of the registrations. The members were informed the permit for the show has been approved by the city. Shari Hill will provide some trivia questions for use in the distribution of door prizes. It was additionally reported that Star Performance, NPD, and other organizations are providing some items for the door prize distribution. All members were informed to meet on at the show site on Friday, September 24 at 8:00 a.m. to begin the process for the show, such as marking parking spaces, picking up debris, folding t-shirts, setting up for parking and registration for the noon opening. The members present were also informed that an informal cookout would be hosted after the poker run country side cruise on Friday evening. It was suggested members bring dishes for potluck to share with members and guests. In summation, the awarding of plaques was discussed and the potential of selection of cars for a 2011 calendar. The treasurer s report was accepted and it was reported there are 47 current members. Upcoming club events were discussed. It was reported on October 9, beginning a noon, members could participate in a tour of the GM Fairfax facility rules and regulations will be listed prior to the event. November 7 will be the day for a tour of Boulevard Brewery. The annual Holiday Dinner is scheduled for December 4 at Fronteras in Olathe. Members discussed the events and highlighted the annual club picnic at Iola which included a guided tour of the Gates Rubber factory. It was noted there would be a car show with awards at the Long Branch restaurant in Overland Park on August 27. Members discussed various upcoming car shows, the Fall Color Tour at the Lake of the Ozarks, October weekend drag races at Kansas City International Raceway, and the Halloween Party. The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. Members were invited to cruise to Olathe Shawnee Pizza to discuss Chevelles and other items. 3

Danny McKarnin coordinated the event with the local Sonic supplying hamburgers and hot dogs. Members brought a side dish and, as usual, there was more than enough food. September 3 Wellsville Car Show Several members of the club attended this event impromptu. We ll be sure to add this one to the list of events for the club. The weather and setting were great. There were probably close to 200 cars. Several folks hit the local BBQ, which had some great food, and then we checked out the cars and kicked back and listened to the band. 4

5 VP s Corner Happy September MACC, and welcome to another edition of VP's Corner. The weather is cooler, and those of us without a/c are thankful for that! September is definitely car show season. Seems like there is something to do and somewhere to cruise to just about any day this month you would like. From the big ones like Goodguys and Ol' Marais to the smaller, city or town based shows, this month is a car guy's (or gals's) heaven. Of course, we all know where we'll be on the weekend of the 25th- attending the best local car show of all. As I've touched on in the past couple of installments, most of my free time lately has been devoted to getting my son's '68 El Camino in fine form to drive to high school. We bought this car a year or so ago or better. Basically a complete driver, this car seemed to be a steal. The one big drawback to this particular ride (and a BIG drawback to my 15 year old son) was that the previous owner had painted it pink. Not a faded red, but a hideous, Pepto- Bismol pink (see pic below). Yuck. Here's a quick note about me. I'm a mechanic. I'm a plumber. I'm an electrician. I've even been considered a borderline landscaper. I am not a bodyman, nor am I a painter. I'm the first to admit it. I have great respect and admiration for the guys that can do these jobs well. I do consider it an art form, and big props to those guys. For the paintingly challenged like myself, there are some new products on the market that make the job of mixing paint, with the correct ratio and style of reducers very simple. Dupli-color is currently making one of those products, called Paint Shop, and that is what made me decide to give it a try. Paint shop is offered over the counter at most big box auto parts stores, as a ready to shoot lacquer paint. Stop in and pick up a few pints of pre-mixed primer, a few cans of color (currently championship white, jet black, competition red, hugger orange, electric blue, or emerald green), and a few cans of clear. No reducers, activators or anything else required- just dump it in the gun and shoot. Sounds easy, right? Actually is wasn't too bad. I did just that- picked up 5 cans of primer, 5 cans of emerald green metallic, and 5 cans of clear. After the time consuming job of sanding, filling, sanding some more and repeating this process a thousand times or so, I was ready to shoot. I wiped the car down with degreaser, hit it with a tack rag, and stirred up my first can of primer. Dumped it in the gun and started shooting my first panel. For some reason, it seemed to be coming out in an odd pattern, and a little rough. I decided to let the panel dry, and I'd do a little research before embarking the following day. Come to find out, I had misread the instructions and was shooting at about double the pressure I should have been for my HVLP gun. After dialing down my pressure, I was ready to give it another try the next night. Lacquer seems to be pretty forgiving, as I had no other trouble laying down the multiple coats over the next couple of nights. Other than my questionable bodywork, I think the job turned out pretty decent. After all the hype and buildup at the high school over the debut of this car in the parking lot, my son was proud to drive his newly green '68 Elco to school last week. He reports that he gets multiple hi-fives and "cool car" comments all day in the halls. Maybe there is hope for the next generation yet! 5

I ve already been out to take pictures of a couple of projects in progress and I plan to include articles in the newsletter when things slow down during the winter. If you have a project car, or even a project your doing on your finished car (I m finding out there is always something you could be doing) and you don t mind me bothering you to get some photos and information I d like to get the car and info in the newsletter. If you have such an animal please give me a shout. Mike President s Column Hello MACC Members, As you may have noticed, this month s newsletter is about a week or so early. The reason for this is that the Mid America Chevelle Car Show is being held on September 24 th and 25 th, we will be attending to the final details of the show that week and might not have the time needed to finish the newsletter. If you haven t registered for the car show there still is time or you can register at the show field too, hope to see everyone there. You don t want to miss out on all the fun this year! A lot of members have worked really hard promoting this event and at this time we have 60 people pre-registered. That is about more than last year. As a club we have passed out over 1,000 fliers at car shows and cruises. Rocky sent out fliers to all ACES members covering eight states. We are hoping 6

7 for a big crowd this year! After the Friday night cruise, we are having a cookout at Ed Smoot s RV on the show field site. Come by and bring your lawn chair and cooler. We will have hamburgers, brauts, and all the Chevelle talk you can handle. This year, Hinshaw s Chevelle Parts will be at the show. If you need anything for your Chevelle you can order it and he will bring it to the show (no shipping charges). You can contact him at We have two other vendors coming: Legendary Interiors and Klassic Keyless Entry. Star Performance has committed to supply the goody bags for the show. If you are interested in some club apparel and can t make it to a meeting we have made it easier for you to order. Just mail me the order sheet and I will get your items ordered. All orders have to be in by the first of the month, and they should be ready to pick up at the next meeting. All the information needed is on the order sheets. Upcoming events for the month of October are: Saturday, October 9 th - a tour of the GM Fairfax plant where they make the Chevrolet Malibu. There will be some restriction on clothing and footwear. Safety glasses will be required, but they should furnish them. October 15 th and 16 th - the Fall Color Tour at the Lake of the Ozarks. This event is attended by other Chevelle clubs such as St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri and is a lot of fun. This is a great place to meet other Chevelle owners from other areas around KC. October 23 rd - the annual Halloween party and hayride at Allen and Robin Call s house in Wellsville, Kansas. Rocky and Shari will keep us informed on these events as they become closer.
