1 The San Diego Corvair Club Monthly Newsletter July 2011 CORSA Chapter 921 Vol. 37, No. 7 Jeff s Car Show No Entry Fee - No Prizes - Good Eats The visit to Jeff Williams open house on June 4 was well planned out by Jim Stanbury and I. First thing was to pick up Stansbury, go to Jeff s and then stop by Dave Townsend s on the way back. But Dave s daughter was having a birthday party which for some reason, was more important than anything to do with Corvairs. Then Jim called Friday to remind me of the weekend s Temecula Wine and Hot Air Balloon Festival and Car Show, which could be a traffic mess on the I-15 around the I-215 split. So maybe the stop at Dave s might be out. Lucky about the party, I guess. Saturday morning, Jim calls and begs off because of a lingering chest problem that has had both he and Carol down for some time. So the GPS and I hop in the Ram and diesel up the I-5 (just following the Garmin). I knew the rest of the day was going to be OK because Car Talk just started as I got on the I-5. (though I had to switch from KPBS to KPCC at San Juan Capistrano). After a small argument with the sweet thing residing in my GPS about me not wanting to use the Toll roads, I got to CA Corvairs in about an hour. What a gorgeous day! The day was beautiful, jacarandas full of purple blooms, temps in the mid-70s and 30 Corvairs parked on the lawn, driveway and curbside when I got there. Throughout the day there must have been 40 total in attendance, as some came and some went. Interestingly, there were quite a few HEI distributor setups (Continued on page 4)

4 (Continued from page 1) The refreshments were satisfying and welcome (and went fast) as everyone wandered about checking all the cars. Some loving soul even brought in cookies and brownies. Seems I was the only SDCC member there, but that didn t shut me up of course. I spent so much time wandering among the cars that I really didn t get much of a chance to tour Jeff s new facility, like most folks. No big deal, I had just been there a couple weeks before to pickup some parts for the Greenbrier. And, I don t think Jeff got much in the way of visiting the showing out front. From Whence the Greenbrier? I found this in the Detroit Area Corvair Club newsletter, The Aircooler. A Nomadish Greenbrier? Styling is very 50 s, especially 1957: Chev/ Pontiac taillights, Nomad B(C)-pillar, Olds beltline and Caddie type finish just above the rocker panels. The booby bumpers were prominent on the 57 General Motors line, and the end of the dual headlamps. Gas filler access at rear suggests a front engine. Wonder how the side door opened? I can t quite make out the name just behind the front door. 4

All have opening deck lid with detailed engine. These cars are highly detailed! $8.00 each or 4 for $30.00 And now 1969 model year convertibles in 1:43 and 1:18 scales Also please visit my web site WANTED: Inexpensive early bucket, or folding back bench seats in sound condition. Sound meaning springs not broken, and foam not degrading. I can put covers on if minor tears, etc. and unless they're red or tan, will probably do so anyway since the car is red (I bought Barry's red convertible). I am aware that convertibles use special seats with adjusters through the sides, but will make do with anything in comfortable condition. Alternately, if you know of nice seats (prefer without headrests but not critical) available (junkyards, or wherever), that will fit in an early convertible without a ton of floorpan modification, let me know that too. ALSO WANTED: Good early springs, front and rear (for convertible, but mine are so bad I'll take anything, I'd love to have a decent ride height again). 4 door springs would probably be best, or even wagon/ Lakewood, but anything that isn't sagged to the bottom appreciated. Again, alternatives/solutions would be wonderful as well, cost IS a consideration. Call Rich Ernst or at SDCC@rernst.com Mike McCrae has rebuilt starters for sale - 10 to be exact. He s asking $110 a piece Call Mike at or him at mmccrae6@cox.net Wanted: Good right rear wheel molding (not perfect) for 64 convertible. Original.
