1 1 MEDIA RELEASE Future talent in Malaysia choose PETRONAS and Google as their Top 1 IDEAL Employers Latest survey also uncovers work/life balance as their most important career goal MALAYSIA, June 16, 2014 Universum today launches the findings from its inaugural survey conducted among almost 11,000 university students in Malaysia. Set out to track career aspirations and preferences of the future talent pool, the Malaysia Top 100 IDEAL Employers student survey also recognises the most coveted employers based solely on the responses collected. PETRONAS is selected by those studying Business, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Law as their Top 1 IDEAL Employer this year, while Google claims the hearts of those from the Humanities and IT cohorts. The survey also uncovered the most important career goals to Malaysian undergraduates; 65 per cent consider to have work/life balance to be most important, followed by 50 per cent who choose to be secure or stable in my job. Despite this, when assessing attractiveness of employers they want to work for upon graduation, students value remuneration & advancement opportunities as much as their people & culture qualities. Rachele Focardi, SVP of Employer Branding and Talent Strategy APAC, Universum says, Malaysia has made significant progress in recent years, positioning itself competitively as a business hub and gateway to the region. Naturally, the ease of finding and attracting good local talent becomes crucial for the success of homegrown and foreign enterprises. By launching a Malaysian edition of Universum s annual global student survey this year, we hope to provide a regular reality check for employers on expectations their future talent have of them and their careers upon graduation. Undergraduates in Malaysia share similar aspirations with their global counterparts, who also view work/life balance as their most important career goal. In addition, young Malaysian talent are also most attracted by people & culture of the future employer, specifically a friendly work environment. However, like Generation Y talent in other developing economies in South East Asia, local undergraduates are still hugely drawn to remuneration & advancement opportunities, especially high future earnings. Nonetheless, we expect this to change very soon as the economy progresses and talent would then consider salary as a hygiene factor. When asked about their expected monthly salary upon graduation, Malaysian undergraduates hope to draw an average of RM3,258. The Business cohort bears the lowest expectations at RM3,037 while those in Law has the highest at RM3,667.
2 2 Other key findings from the survey include: Homegrown employers are more attractive than their foreign counterparts A majority of Malaysian university students find local employers more ideal to work for than foreign ones. This is evident from a larger proportion of homegrown organisations ranked among Top 10 IDEAL Employers than foreign multinational companies. In particular, 90 per cent of the 10 most attractive employers among the Business and Humanities cohorts are local. Generation Y talent are not job-hoppers from the onset Another interesting finding is related to students expected tenure with their first employer upon graduation; four in 10 would like to spend five years or more while only seven per cent envision spending one year or less. Employers are often surprised by this result as they find it harder to retain Generation Y employees than those of older generations in reality. Our survey, not only in Malaysia but across the world, has shown time and again that future talent are not flippant by nature. What we believe could have contributed to this disparity is mismanagement of expectations from the employers as well as the talent themselves throughout the employment journey, says Rachele. The Top 10 IDEAL Employers among Business, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Humanities are as follows: Business Engineering Rank Employer Name Rank Employer Name 1 PETRONAS 1 PETRONAS 2 Bank Negara Malaysia 2 Shell 3 Google 3 Sime Darby 4 AirAsia 4 Schlumberger 5 Malaysia Airlines (MAS) 5 Google 6 Sime Darby 6 SapuraKencana Petroleum 7 Lembaga Tabung Haji 7 ExxonMobil 8 Maybank 8 Malaysia Airlines (MAS) 9 CIMB Group 9 Intel 10 Bursa Malaysia 10 Microsoft

Each respondent is asked questions about their career preferences, expectations and employment related drivers and then presented with a list of 120 national and international employers, nominated by the target group through an independent and structured nomination and assessment process, which prevents companies unfairly influencing their positions. Respondents acknowledge those companies they would consider working for. Of the companies selected as considered employers, the respondents then select their five IDEAL Employers and answer questions about their perceived brand based on Universum s Drivers of Employer Attractiveness global framework. The rankings measure the level of employer attractiveness of companies or organisations on the recruitment market.
