4 4 General Section Introduction Introduction General Section This display is intended to allow the vehicle operator to monitor vital truck and engine information while the vehicle is in use. It also has the capability to display stored trip information. Whenever possible, the desired display selection should be made prior to operating the vehicle. About This Manual The Cat ID has been designed for use on 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines and 3100 HEUI (3116 and 3126) Engines. Even though there are two different types of engines, Cat ID supports them similarly with this one manual describing all of the features of the Cat ID. When this manual describes a feature, you should assume that the feature applies to both types of engines. If a feature only applies to one type, the manual will state 3100 HEUI Engines Only or 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only. NOTE: The Cat ID will only support 3100 HEUI Engines (3116 and 3126) that are September 1996 model year or newer. Select the desired display prior to moving the vehicle. Do not manipulate the display while the vehicle is moving. This could divert attention from driving efforts and result in personal injury or equipment damage.

5 5 General Section Features of Cat ID E ESN Caterpillar Driver Information Display (Cat ID) Features of Cat ID The Cat ID can display a variety of engine and vehicle information, as described in this section. For detailed operating information see the Operation Section of this manual. It is recommended the driver review the available information as listed in this manual or the Cat ID Screen Map and select, before driving, the most important information for the trip. This will avoid unnecessary distractions while driving in traffic. Engine Operating Information The Cat ID provides information on cruise control set speed, PTO engine rpm set speed, fuel temperature to the engine, boost and oil pressure, coolant temperature, and intake manifold temperature. Vehicle Trip Information The Cat ID provides information on fuel economy, fuel used, average vehicle speed, idle and PTO time, percent idle time, idle fuel, and PTO fuel. All of the these parameters can be tied to trip segments or the engine history. A Driver Trip Segment is available for 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines only. A Fleet Trip Segment is available for 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines and 3100 HEUI (3116 and 3126) Engines. For the Driver Trip Segment, the driver determines the start and stop points, and for the Fleet Trip Segment the vehicle owner determines the start and stop points. The Fleet Trip Segment can be tied to each state the vehicle operates in, as well as split between two Driver ID s.

6 6 General Section Features of Cat ID Maintenance Information The last oil and filter change can be entered, allowing the display to indicate when the next oil and filter change is due. Diagnostic Data The Cat ID provides diagnostic codes, with both a number, and a brief text explanation. Those codes, indicating a potentially serious engine problem, are displayed automatically by Cat ID. When one of these codes appears, the driver should bring the vehicle to a stop (off the road and out of traffic), because the engine may shutdown within 20 seconds. Refer to Automatically Displayed Diagnostic Codes in the, Display Screen Diagnostic Data for a list of these codes. Theft Deterrent The Cat ID provides the capability to allow or prevent engine starting, or shut the engine down by entering a four character password into the display when the engine is at idle. Fuel Correction Adjustment The Cat ID provides the capability to adjust the Fuel Correction Factor of the ECM. Display Configuration The display can provide information in either English/Spanish or English/French. Units of measure can be displayed in English (mph, U.S. gallons, psi, F), English-Imperial Gallons (mph, Imperial gallons, psi, F), or Metric (kph, liters, kpa, C). The English/French EEPROM as well as the French or Spanish manuals can be ordered by contacting your local Caterpillar Dealer.

10 10 Driver Information Display Screen Map Driver Information Display Screen Map In order to view specific information, a Screen Map (SENR6503) and a Cat ID Screen Map (in this manual), is provided to aid in directly accessing a specific screen. Each block of the Screen Map has arrows attached, indicating the actual display arrow keys which are available with each information screen. Pressing a display arrow not shown as available is ignored, and the display will remain at the same information screen. Row 1 of the screen map indicates the title screen for each of the columns of information screens. The rightmost title screen and INSTANTANEOUS DATA title screen in column 1 are adjacent, meaning pressing the right arrow key from the rightmost title screen moves to the INSTANTANEOUS DATA title screen in column 1. In general, movement between the columns of information is permitted only when the column title screen is in view. The exception to this is movement between the Fleet Trip, Driver Trip, and Lifetime Total columns (only available with 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines). The Up and Down arrow keys allow movement up and down through the information columns. When viewing the bottom information screen for a column, you can press the Down arrow key to select the column title screen. You cannot however, press the Up arrow key from the column title screen to get to the bottom information screen.

16 16 Display Screens (After Power-up) Display Screens (After Power-up) The Cat ID will go through a sequence of screens when first powered up. Each of these screens is intended to provide set-up information to the driver before driving the vehicle. Cat ID will proceed through each screen, after displaying the screen for 3 seconds. It is recommended the power-up sequence be completed with all desired set-up information entered, and a desired information screen selected before driving the vehicle. An Active Diagnostic Code indicating a potentially serious engine problem will be automatically displayed by Cat ID and override the normal power-up sequence. NOTICE Depending on truck configuration, the engine may shut down when a potentially serious engine problem diagnostic code becomes active. The operator will be provided a warning indication 20 seconds before engine shutdown. To avoid a hazardous condition that may cause injury or death, steer the vehicle to a suitable location to stop immediately when the warning code appears. A complete map of the screens follows in the Cat ID Screen Map section. Display Screen Sequence Theft Deterrent The second screen shown, following power-up, is the THEFT DETERRENT title screen. The Cat ID will indicate the current status of the THEFT DETERRENT System, enabled, auto-enabled, or disabled. If the system is enabled, a password must be entered to start the engine. Press any key to continue.

17 17 Display Screens (After Power-up) Driver Entry (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only) If programmed, the Cat ID will indicate the last driver stored as the active driver in the system. If the Fleet Trip Segment has been reset, the display will indicate NO ACTIVE DRIVER. Press any key to continue. State Crossing (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only) If programmed, this screen is the STATE CROSSING title screen. This indicates the last state stored as the current state in the system. If the Fleet Trip Segment has been reset, the display will indicate NO ACTIVE STATE. Press any key to continue. PM1 Maintenance The final screen is a PM1 MAINTENANCE screen. This indicates when PM1 (oil and filter change) maintenance is due within 3000 miles/60 hours, or past due. Following the power-up sequence, the Cat ID will display the Miles Per Gallon screen under the INSTANTANEOUS DATA title screen. The driver can then go to the appropriate screen to enter the theft deterrent password, driver identification, and or state as necessary. The driver should then select the desired screen for viewing while driving, before starting the trip. Whenever possible, the desired display selection should be made prior to operating the vehicle. Do not manipulate the display while the vehicle is moving. This could divert attention from driving efforts and result in personal injury or equipment damage.

18 18 Screens (Instantaneous Data) Screens (Instantaneous Data) The display can indicate the status of up to 16 different engine and vehicle operating conditions (or parameters) as determined by the Engine Electronic Control System. The INSTANTANEOUS DATA can include: Current Fuel Economy, Fleet Trip Segment Fuel Economy, Vehicle Speed, Cruise Set Speed, Fuel Rate, Engine Load, Engine Speed, PTO Set Engine Speed, Fuel Temperature, Boost Pressure, Coolant Temperature, Oil Pressure, Intake Manifold Temperature, Ambient Air Temperature, Cold Mode Status, and Multi-Torque Status. Remember that not all engines support all of the INSTANTANEOUS DATA parameters. The parameters supported depend on the type of engine. For example, 3100 HEUI Engines only support 11 of the 16 possible INSTANTANEOUS DATA parameters. View the appropriate screen map for the particular engine for a complete listing of INSTANTANEOUS DATA parameters. NOTE: These parameters use the Engine Electronic Control System (ECM, Sensors, and Switches) as their source of information. This information may deviate from other vehicle gauges because they use different sensors for their source. It is likely the Cat ID and the vehicle cab gauges will indicate different values, and respond slower/faster to changing conditions as the vehicle operates. Because the readings are different, it does not indicate the display gauges or the engine s electronic components are defective.

23 23 Screens (Totals Information) Screens (Totals Information) Trip Segments The Caterpillar electronic engines will record vehicle operating information in a variety of ways. The Caterpillar Driver Information Display (Cat ID) provides the method to label recorded information for both driver and fleet owner. With the 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines, the Cat ID records information in three separate ways Lifetime Totals, Fleet Trip Segment, and Driver Trip Segment. With the 3100 HEUI Engines, the Cat ID displays Fleet Trip Segment and Lifetime Totals. Lifetime Totals Lifetime totals are permanently stored in the ECM on the electronic engines from the time the engine is new. The Lifetime Totals cannot be reset or cleared under normal operation. Lifetime Totals are shown on the Cat ID screen map. Totals Information Column (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only) The Totals Information column acts as a gateway to the Driver Trip, Fleet Trip, and Lifetime Totals columns. Once the down arrow key is pressed, from the Totals Information title screen, the operator will have access to the three totals columns. TOTALS INFORMATION DRIVER TRIP TOTALS FLEET TRIP TOTALS LIFETIME TOTALS Totals Information Column.

24 24 Screens (Totals Information) Fleet Trip Segment This information is intended for the fleet owner, or owner-operator. The ability to reset the information from the Cat ID depends on how the engine is programmed. Additionally, the Fleet Trip Segment can be reset using electronic service tools and the appropriate passwords. Resetting the Fleet Trip Segment does not affect the Driver Trip Segment (if supported) or the Lifetime Totals. The Fleet Trip Segment is shown on the Cat ID screen map. (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only) The Cat ID provides the driver with the capability to enter the state in which the vehicle is driving. The state information is then part of the Fleet Trip Segment. The Cat ID also provides the capability to enter two Driver ID s for the Fleet Trip Segment. The Fleet Trip Segment can then be sorted for the two Driver ID s by the Caterpillar Fleet Information Software. The state information is shown on the Cat ID screen map. Entering the State Crossings and Driver ID is explained further in this manual. When the Fleet Trip Segment is reset, the Fleet Trip Driver ID s, and Fleet Trip State Totals are cleared. Driver Trip Segment (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only) The Driver Trip Segment is intended for, and controlled by the driver. The Driver Trip Totals are shown on the Cat ID screen map in column 2. Resetting the Driver Trip Segment does not affect the Fleet Trip Segment (and therefore State Totals or Driver ID s) or Lifetime Totals. Example of Trip Segments and Lifetime Totals (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only) The Explanation of Trip Segments shows the affect of using the State Crossing, Driver ID, Fleet Trip Segment, and Driver Trip Segment.

27 27 Screens (Totals Information) Screens (Driver Trip Totals) (3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Engines Only) The Driver Trip Segment (start and stop point) is controlled by the driver, like a trip odometer. The Driver Trip Segment Totals are independent of Driver ID s. If a new driver begins operating the vehicle, changing from one Driver ID to another will not reset the Driver Trip Segment. Ten (10) Driver Trip parameters are available: Average Fuel Economy, Distance Traveled, Average Speed, Fuel Used, Engine Run Hours, PTO Fuel Used, PTO Hours, Idle Fuel Used, Idle Hours, and Percent Idle Time. Accessing Driver Trip Screens Column 2 of the screen map indicates movement is allowed up or down from any of the DRIVER TRIP screens. Movement to the FLEET TRIP screen indicating the same parameters is also possible. The Down, Up, and Right arrow keys are available from any of the DRIVER TRIP DATA screens. Moving to the corresponding Fleet Trip information allows the driver to compare current Driver Trip data to Fleet Trip data.
