Introduction For many years the Over Turning of tipper vehicles has been a major problem within the Transport Industry and whilst Health and Safety Guidelines have been issued, and Tilt Table Tests undertaken, it is still the driver at the end of the day who has full responsibility and control during the tipping process. The Transport Support Inclinometer has been designed to provide a cost effective solution and help assist drivers when tipping takes place. Tilt Table Test The Category A Test A Vehicle or Trailer should be expected to discharge material on an unmade or un-level ground, and should be accompanied by manufacturers detailed operating instructions. A Conformity Test should be carried out to allow Category A vehicles and trailers to undergo a Tilt Table Test to an angle of 7 degrees before becoming unstable. Tilt Table Test The Category B Test The vehicle or Trailer should be expected to discharge material on level hard surfaces. A Conformity Test should be carried out to allow a Category B vehicles or trailers to undergo a Tilt Table Test to an angle of 5 degrees before becoming unstable. The TS Inclinometer The TS Inclinometer has a factory setting of 5 but may be adjusted via the Managers Overide Key facility to a desired safety setting. The inclinometer can be supplied in kit form complete with Tractor Cable, Suzi Cable, Trailer Cable, Cut Off Valve and Sensor Unit or can be installed by one of our fully trained engineers.the Inclinometer will give continuous support throughout the tipping procedure by displaying the precise angle of the trailer. Should the angle factor of the trailer increase, an audible safety alarm will sound to warn the driver. If the angle increases to the level of the safety setting a continuous alarm will be triggered and the unit will automatically stop the tipping process. The display will advise the driver to slowly lower the body. The Transport Support Inclinometer is a risk assessment tool which is designed to take the guesswork out of tipping. The unit has a built in sounder as well as an external sounder fitted to the trailer to warn any pedestrians that tipping is taking place. The sensor unit is housed in an impact resistant, IP68 rated (Water Proof), cast alloy case which is fitted to the rear cross member of the trailer. During the tipping process it will constantly feed the T.S.Inclinometer Control Unit with accurate angle data. The sensor unit also houses the external audio warning device which will alert others that a hazardous tipping procedure is taking place. The T.S.Inclinometer has been designed with quality and reliability in mind and is manufactured to ISO9001:2000 and conforms to the latest CE Standards. 3

The function of the Inclinometer Location of the Inclinometer sensor Horizontal Roll How it works? The sensor uses a chamber of gas with a heating element in the center and four temperature sensors around its edge. Just as hot air rises and cooler air sinks, the same applies. When the sensor is level, the hot gas pocket rises to the top-center of the camber, and all the temperature sensors measure the same temperature. Depending on how the sensor is tilted the hot gas will collect closer to one or more of the temperature sensors. This differential in temperature is used by an onboard microprocessor to determine the angle of tilt. All of this technology is incorporated into a single silicone chip just millimetres in size. 5 Installation Before stating the installation of the TS Inclinometer it is important to carefully read this instruction manual. SAFETY FIRST! Ideally the tipper body should be empty, if it is not extreme care should be taken when raising the tipper body. The trailer should be parked in a straight line, on firm level ground. Before raising the tipper body you should check for any overhead obstructions. DO NOT RAISE THE TIPPER BODY NEAR OVERHEAD POWER LINES. The tipper body should be correctly propped in accordance with the manufactures guidelines before working beneath it. The vehicles cab may have to be tilted forward. All loose objects should be removed from the cab to avoid any items falling through the windscreen. If using power tools we recommend using 110v equipment fitted with RCD circuit breakers. We recommend that all safety procedures are followed when fitting the TS Inclinometer, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be respected where safety regulations apply. Follow the safety procedure set out by the site you are working on and report any safety risks or accidents to the sites health and safety representative. 5

Installation Standard TSI1 kit Before mounting the Inclinometer Control Unit you should take the following points into consideration:- Where will the power be picked up from? (the Inclinometer needs to take power from a 24vDC Ignition switched feed. i.e. a supply that is only live when the Ignition is in the power on position). Is the Inclinometer Control Unit going to obstruct anything? Such as gear shift, break handle, pedals, switches and other controls or the drivers line of sight. Note: Mounting anything which obstructs the drivers vision may cause the vehicle to fail MOT and may even be illegal. Cables for the Inclinometer will need to be routed around the cab and to the exterior of the vehicle. Choose a location where cable can be easily hidden behind the dash or fascias. 1. Using the two Control Unit mounting brackets, two Grip Knobs and four 2.9 x 9.5 ST screws mount the unit to a suitable location in the cab. 2. Place the Data connection unit behind the dash/fascia of the cab. The ideal position is behind the passenger foot well panel. Connect the cable marked POWER to the vehicles electrical supply. The BLUE lead is connected to the vehicles GROUND or 0v (on most modern vehicles the chassis is ground, but it is always best to check with a voltage meter). The FUSED lead is connected to the vehicles +24v this should be an ignition switched supply. 7

Installation We recommend that power for the Inclinometer is picked up from the following:- A fuse spare located in the vehicles fuse box. This is often marked Auxiliary or AUX. The vehicles cigarette lighter socket. Be sure to check that it is 24vDC ignition switched. Any other suitable 24vDC ignition switched supply. If you are unsure always consult the vehicle manufacturers handbook or contact Transport Support for advice. We DO NOT recommend connecting to the following circuits:- The braking system (ABS, EBS) Engine management If you are unsure always consult the vehicle manufacturers handbook or contact Transport Support for advice. 3. Connect the cable marked SENSOR to the sensor socket on the Inclinometer control unit. The sensor cable needs to be routed through the dash of the vehicle, through the bulkhead to the exterior of the cab. Sensor cable routed through vehicle dash and exiting through cable gland in passenger foot well. (often found on Scania vehicles) By removing this cover and the dash panel in the passenger foot well, the sensor cable can be routed to the outside of the vehicle (some DAF, Foden & other vehicles) 8

Installation 4. Connect the cable marked VALVE or AUX * to the valve or AUX socket on the Inclinometer control Unit. * The cable will be marked either VALVE or AUX depending on specification and optional accessories supplied with the kit. The valve cable needs to be routed through the dash and brought out behind the PTO control handle. 5. Connect the Valve Unit to the push fit terminals on the end of the valve lead. The leads to the Valve Unit can be connected up any way round (the valve is not polarised) 6. The Valve Unit has three ports, air in, air out and exhaust. They are marked on the valve as IN, OUT and EXH. The valve needs to be connected to the PTO airline marked TIP or UP. If it is not marked on the rear of the PTO control the correct air line can be found by the following procedure:- With the PTO in the HOLD position remove one of the air lines from the connectors in the rear of the PTO control, it is often better to start with one in the centre (remember which connector you removed the air line from). With one air line removed, engage the PTO control, then put the PTO control into the TIP or UP position. If air escapes from the rear of the PTO control you have found the TIP or UP air line. If no air escapes or air escapes as soon as the air line is removed from the connector this is NOT the correct airline. Re-connect the air line to the PTO control and repeat the procedure with one of the other air lines. Once you have located the TIP or UP air line the valve unit needs to be connected so that it will interrupt it. Make sure the airflow passes through the valve as marked on the valve body. 9

Installation 7. The Sensor Cable, which should now be running from the inside of the vehicle to the exterior, needs to be routed under the cab to the Suzi connection point at the rear of the cab. On most vehicles it can be routed though a gland or electrical cover, as shown on page 6. Then following the vehicles electrical cable loom to the rear of the cab. YOU MAY NEED TO TIP THE CAB AT THIS POINT. SEE SAFETY GUIDELINES ON PAGE 3. The Sensor Cable should be secured to the vehicles existing cable loom with the cable ties supplied. Care should be taken not to route the Sensor Cable to close to heat sources or in places where the cable could be crushed or cut when the cab is lowered. Usual sensor cable route 8. Mount the one of the Suzi Connectors to the rear of the cab. Mount the Suzi using four M4 x 20 PAN Screws, four M4 Washers and four M4 Nylock Nuts. Do not fix the Suzi bracket to any part of the cab that will move when the cab is tilted. 9. Mount the second Suzi Connector to a suitable location on the Trailer using the four M4 x 20 PAN screws, four M4 Washers and four M4 Nylock nuts. 10

Mount the external voice sounder to a suitable location on the trailer chassis. The sounder is mounted to the trailer by drilling a single 8mm hole and using the nut/washer attached to the sounder. Connect the sounder into the trailer mounted suzi connector. See wiring diagram above. The cable from the sounder can enter the connector via the cable gland on the side. The Sounder Cable should be secured to the trailers existing cable loom with the cable ties supplied. Care should be taken not to route the Sounder Cable too close to heat sources or in places where the cable could be crushed, trapped or cut. 11

Installation 12. Connect the Suzi cable to the trailer and tractor connectors. Linking the trailer to the tractor. Suzi cable connected to the trailer connector. 13. Bring the trailer cable out through the cable glad in the side of the Suzi connector. The trailer cable needs to be routed down the length of the trailer to the rear most cross member. Be sure to leave enough loose cable at the rear of the trailer to connect the sensor unit. Secure the cable in place using the cable ties supplied. Trailer cable route. 12

Installation 13. Installing and calibrating the Sensor. (IMPORTANT! See overleaf) This needs to be undertaken with some precision and accuracy. The Sensor is attached to the rear most cross member or the nearest one accessible to the rear of the trailer, and fitted in the middle of the cross member. Connect all the cables together and ensure the Sensor is the last item fitted. Clean the top of the cross member and place the Sensor on top. Switch on the T. S. Inclinometer, and observe the reading on the LCD display on the Control Unit. An audible warning should also be heard from the Control Unit and Sensor. i.e. 1 beep = 1 degree, 2 beeps = 2 degrees.and so on. If the cross member is level then the display will show a Zero, and no beep. Should the T. S. Inclinometer show that it is not level, then establish which way the trailer is leaning. ( + / - ), and make a note of the LCD reading. The Sensor is very sensitive and can fluctuate between two numbers, so give it a little time to reach the correct level. Disconnect the Sensor, mark and drill a small hole in the cross member, with the Sensor being placed in the middle of the cross member. Secure the Sensor to the cross member with the one bolt. This will allow the Sensor to be pivoted on the one bolt. Reconnect the Sensor and switch the T. S. Inclinometer on. The Sensor can now be pivoted until the previous reading is matched, again allowing for the ( + / - ). Mark and drill the remaining three holes, again test for calibration before tightening all the bolts, then finally applying a locking solution. Rear of trailer Rear of trailer Note: If you are fitting the TS Inclinometer to multiple vehicles it may be worth investing in a digital protractor. This is a precision instrument which can measure the exact angle of the vehicles chassis. Precision mounting of the sensor will result in increased accuracy of the TS Inclinometer. Transport Support can also supply Digital Protractors to order. 14. Mount the Sensor Cover over the Sensor Unit using four M5 x 40 HEX bolts. We recommend using Silicone sealant or other waterproof sealant to make a waterproof seal between the Sensor Cover and the trailer cross member. 13

Installation A Cross Member Sensor UP The front of the sensor must face towards the tractor unit as in figure A. Occasionally it is not possible to mount the sensor directly to a rear cross member so that the front faces the tractor. See figure B. Towards Tractor Mount sensor using M5x20 Hex Bolt, M5 Washers & M5 Nylock Nut B Cross Member Sensor UP Towards Tractor If the sensor can only be mounted to the opposite cross member to the one pictured on page 11, the sensor must be mounted as in figure B. Use the four M5x50 Hex Bolts, four rubber washers & four 25mm Steel Spacers. M5x50 Hex Bolt, Rubber Washer & 25mm Steel Spacer 14

Operating Instructions Power Switch - The unit must be switched on to operate the tipper. 2. LCD Display - Displays maximum tipping angle at start up followed by the vehicles current angle and direction of camber It also displays warning messages when it is unsafe to tip. The display is back lit for day/night use. 3. Mode Button - This allows the operator to set the maximum safe tipping angle in conjunction with the Override Key. 4. Volume Control - During tipping the unit will display the current angle of the vehicle and emit audible tones which also indicate the angle. i.e. 1 bleep = 1 degree, 2 bleeps = 2 degrees and so on. During normal safe tipping, the volume can be adjusted or even muted. If the vehicle angle exceeds the safe tipping angle the system will go into alarm mode where the volume automatically goes to full and can not be adjusted or muted. 5. Power Socket - The power lead is connected to this socket. 6. Sensor Socket - The Sensor Socket has two functions, the first is to connect the sensor lead, the second is to set the control unit to override in conjunction with the override key. 7. Valve or AUX Socket - The valve or AUX lead is connected to this socket. 8. Warning Indicator - GREEN = OK TO TIP, RED = DANGER TIPPING STOPPED. 16

Setting the maximum safe tipping angle Operating Instructions The TS Inclinometer is supplied as standard with a factory setting of 5 maximum safe tipping angle. This means that if the angle of the vehicle exceeds 5 in respect to the horizontal plane it will alarm and stop the tipper body from being raised. Transport Support always recommends that you contact your trailer manufacturer to obtain information on its maximum safe tilt limit. THE LOWER THE ANGLE, THE SAFER IT IS... If you are unsure what to set the maximum angle to, we recommend starting low and working up. To set the maximum safe tipping angle of the inclinometer:- Switch the power to the unit OFF. Remove the lead marked SENSOR from the sensor socket on the control unit. Insert the override key into the sensor socket. Push and hold the button marked MODE. Keeping your finger on the MODE button, switch the power to the unit ON. When the unit powers up it will display the current maximum safe tipping angle then it will flash OVERRIDE on the display. Keeping the mode button depressed, remove the override key. The display will now start to count up from the minimum available angle to the maximum angle. When the display reaches the desired angle, take your finger off the mode button. Wait a couple of seconds for the unit to store the angle setting and reset. Turn the power to the unit OFF Re-connect the sensor lead and switch the unit on. When the unit powers up the new maximum safe tipping angle will be displayed momentarily. NOTE: The Inclinometer Control Unit should NOT be set to 0 max tipping angle. This will cause the Inclinometer to alarm as soon as it is switched on. The ability to set the max tipping angle to 0 is for test purposes only. 17

Troubleshooting Problem There is no power to the Inclinometer Control Unit. Possible Cause/Corrective Action The unit is powered by ignition feed from the vehicle. The vehicle ignition must be in the POWER ON position. Check that all the leads to the Inclinometer are in the correct sockets, properly connected and the power switch is in the ON position. The Inclinometer Control Unit shows that it is safe to tip but tipper body will not raise. The fuse to the inclinometer may have blown, check the 3A blade fuse located at the end of the power supply lead (usually under the vehicle dash where the power has been picked up), if this is intact check the 2A fuse which is mounted in the Inclinometer Control Unit. Check that the lead marked valve or V is correctly connected to the corresponding socket on the Inclinometer Control Unit. Check that the Shut Off Valve is Installed correctly. The valve is marked for air IN and OUT. Also check that it is installed in the PTO airline marked TIP or UP. (see page 7) The Inclinometer Control Unit is alarming but the vehicle seems to be on level ground. Occasionally excessive dirt and moisture in the airline may cause the valve to stick. Try pushing the RED button on the valve to free the valve shuttle. If this fails the valve must be replaced. The unit will alarm if the chassis angle is greater than the maximum tipping angle set on the Inclinometer Control Unit. Continued... 18

Troubleshooting Problem The Inclinometer Control Unit is alarming but the vehicle seems to be on level ground. Possible Cause/Corrective Action If the Inclinometer Control Unit has been set at a low angle of degrees i.e. <3 it may look as if the vehicle is alarming on level ground. Try setting the inclinometer at its maximum angle setting then read the angle that is displayed. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO SET THE INCLINOMETER BACK TO IT S ORIGINAL SETTING AFTER THIS TEST. (see page 16) Check that the Inclinometer Control Unit has NOT been set to 0 max tipping angle by mistake. This will cause the Inclinometer to alarm as soon as it is switched on. The maximum tipping angle is displayed every time the unit is switched on. Note: The ability to set the max tipping angle to 0 is for test purposes only. Check the following connections:- 1. All leads are correctly connected to the Inclinometer control Unit. 2. Both sides of the suzi cable are connected correctly. 3. The sensor is correctly connected to the trailer cable. 4. On a new installation check that the suzi connector has been wired correctly (see page 9 & 14) The trailer, suzi, or tractor cable may have been damaged. Check that there is no cable damage from the control unit through to the sensor. 19

Troubleshooting Problem Possible Cause/Corrective Action The Inclinometer behaves erratically when CB radio, cellular telephone or other transmitting device is used in close proximity to it. The external voice sounder is not functioning. Occasionally powerful transmitting devices or non-legal CB radios/ transmitters may interfere with the TS Inclinometer. AS A MATTER OF SAFETY, TRANSPORT SUPPORT DOES NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF CELLULAR TELEPHONES, CB RADIOS, OR OTHER TRANSMITTING DEVICES DURING THE TIPPING PROCESS. The use of such devices only serves to distract the operator during the tipping process. Check that the external voice sounder is wired correctly to the terminals in the trailer suzi connector. (See page 9 & 14) Check that there is no damage to the voice sounder cable. Also follow the same procedure as described at the bottom of page 18 (checking connections). The voice sounder is fully weather proof and sealed to IP68 standard. However it may not function correctly if it is clogged with dirt and debris. Impact damage can also affect the function of the voice sounder. In normal operation the voice sounder should read DANGER! STAND CLEAR, UNSTABLE VEHICLE. Note: Other voice messages and warning tones are available on request. 20

Maintenance Providing the installation guidelines have been followed correctly, the TS Inclinometer should require very little maintenance. Cleaning - The control unit can be cleaned using a soft damp cloth. DO NOT use detergents, abrasives, solvents or alcohol. Prevent excessive moisture around the power switch and sockets. DO NOT allow liquid to enter the control unit. If any liquid is spilt into the control unit, it should not be switched on and returned for repair, stating the cause of the defect. The TS Inclinometer control unit, sensor and data connection unit contain NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS. DO NOT OPEN. For service contact Transport Support see rear of booklet. Warning! DO NOT USE JET WASH OR HIGH PRESSURE HOSES ON THE FOLLOWING AREAS: SUZI CONNECTORS SUZI CABLE SENSOR/SENSOR COVER Although the TS Inclinometer sensor and exterior cable connections are IP68 rated (Waterproof). High-pressure water jets can damage the sensor and electrical connectors. Replacing fuses - The TS Inclinometer system is fitted two fuses 1 x 3A Automotive Blade Fuse (colour - purple) 3 1 x 2TA 20mm Fuse The 3A blade fuse is mounted in a splash-proof fuse holder on the power lead where the power is picked up.
