DIRECTOR S PAGE GREG MANGO V.A.T.S., P.A.T.S., M.A.T.S. and PASSLOCK, it s all becoming very confusing. What ever happened to the good old days when General Motors vehicles used either an A, B, C, D, E, H, J, or K key? And Ford used one keyway for the ignition (on almost all models) and one keyway for the trunk (on almost all models)? Like the old saying goes, that was then, this is now and anit-thef systems are here to stay. With the introduction of V.A.T.S., M.A.T.S., PASSLOCK and P.A.T.S. over the years, it s a bit more difficult to keep track of it all. Although none of the systems mentioned are really that difficult to service, keeping track of what is used where, is! To ease the pain a little, here is a reference list of the anti-theft ignition systems currently being used on Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, GMC Trucks, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury. 3 The 1997 Nissan 200SX By Michael Hyde 1. The new 200SX is also very similar to the Nissan Sentra. There are slight differences but not much. The 200SX uses the standard Nissan keyway and the code-series X There are four depths and eight cuts. OPENING 2. Use two good wedges and a reverse slide linkage tool. This particular tool was purchased from Tech-Train. 3. A view of the horizontal linkage rods. The top linkage rod is the locking button rod. 4 Winter National Locksmith Automobile Association

4. The tool being moved into position. Notice to the right of the tool the metal security channel for the locking linkage rod. 5. The tool is now pushing up on the rod as it connects to the bell crank (or) pivot point. IGNITION SERVICING 7. First, pop-off the plastic trim around the front of the ignition face. 6. The ignition lock assembly is concealed by a two piece plastic shroud. As with almost all Nissan s there is no active retainer for easy removal of the ignition cylinder. Therefor removal of the entire lock assembly is necessary. 8. There are four phillips head screws that must be removed to separate the plastic two piece shroud. National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

10. Making sure the battery is disconnected, you can now remove the shear-head bolts. The shearhead bolts can be removed by drilling a hole in the center of the bolt and using a EZ-OUT to unscrew the bolt. Another method would be to use a die grinder (Dremel) to make a slot in the bolt head and unscrew it with a flat-blade screwdriver. Even another method would be to use a Awl or long Pin Punch to tap on the edge of the bolt, at an angle, in order to unscrew the bolt. 9. Once the screws are removed, you can unsnap the plastic shroud and remove it. 11. The ignition lock assembly is pictured. 12. There are two roll pins, one on each side of the lock that need to be removed. 6 Winter National Locksmith Automobile Association

13. Once the two pins are removed you can then pull off the lock face cap. 14. The cylinder can now be removed. Be careful of the spring and ball bearing that sit on the buzzer lever. 15. A view of the cylinder plug removed from the cylinder housing. The plug contains all eight tumblers. DOOR LOCK SERVICING 16. The cylinder plug has two small actuators that fit into it, one on each side. Be careful not to lose them. 17. On this model, the door lock cylinder is not part of the outside handle assembly. National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

18. A view of the inside door panel which must be removed. 19. Remove the phillips head screw in the door pull cavity. 20. Do not remove the screw in the center of the inside door release. There is a trim ring that snaps on top of the release housing. 21. The trim ring being removed. 22. Next, There are two fasteners on the front edge of the panel that need to be removed. 8 Winter National Locksmith Automobile Association

24. There are four phillips head screws on the bottom of the panel that must be removed. 23. There is also two fasteners on the rear edge of the panel that need to be removed. 25. A view of the door with the panel removed. Remove the thin plastic access hole covers and insert a 10mm socket to take off the nut that holds the anti-theft metal arm in place. 26. Now you can insert a large screwdriver to slide off the metal horseshoe clip. The Nissan door clip can be a tough one to remove. National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

27. To disassemble the door lock you must remove the face cap. Replacement caps are available from ASP, part # P Next, remove the tailpiece, it is held on by a C clip. 29. The lock cylinder disassembled. 30. The door lock cylinder plug contain all eight tumblers. TRUNK LOCK SERVICING 31. To service the trunk lock it will be necessary to remove the painted trim cover that sits on top of the lock cylinder and blocks the cylinder from being removed. 32. There are six plastic fasteners that must be individually unsnapped. Don t try to just pull up on the panel as this action can cause the panel to crack. They must be unsnapped from the inside. 10 Winter National Locksmith Automobile Association

33. There are also six 8mm nuts that have to be removed. 34. Now that the fasteners have been removed there is access to the lock cylinder. 35. The lock cylinder is held in place by two 10mm bolts. 36. To disassemble the cylinder you must remove the face cap. The cap must re-used. National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

Computer Software for the Automotive Locksmith COD - Codes On Disk One of the requirements for automotive work is a good code system. Code books are declining in popularity as computers have become commonplace. Two reasons for this are the reduced bulk and the quicker information available from code software. Blackhawk s Codes on Disk (COD) is ideal software for quick code retrieval. The program starts quickly and is immediately ready for a code. Lookup is very fast, ranging from four to six seconds on a 286 processor to almost instantaneous on a Pentium. Every series containing the code is displayed so that you can choose the one that applies. For most series, the description includes the range of years that a series has been used. If more than one blank is used for the same series, the descriptions will help you to pinpoint the correct blank by listing specific models separately. What kind of information is presented? Of course you will see the cuts on the key - up to four blanks are also shown - most commonly Curtis, Ilco, Silca, and Strattec, if applicable. For cutting information you can set the program to default to your favorite code machine such as: HPC 1200; HPC punch; Framon; A-1 Pak-a-Punch; Curtis clipper; Exacta; DC-300; Codemax DSD number; ITL (sends space/depth and cuts to the machine); Baxter depth keys as well as give micrometer measurements. No matter which you choose for the default, every other space/depth choice is only one keystroke away. So if you use a Framon or 1200 in your shop but a clipper in your van you can relay to your outside serviceman which kit or carriage to use. If you want a paper trail, just send the information to your printer and it will print a short note telling you cuts, key blank, and space/depth information. Done with one key and ready for the next? So is Codes On Disk. There are no extra steps to hold you back, just type in the next code and continue. No Keyblank? Use KBX - Key Blank Cross-Reference. What if you don t have the blank needed? Well, maybe you do after all, you just didn t know it. KBX: Key Blank Cross- References has virtually every blank available to the North American Locksmith, and many obsolete numbers as well. And since it is updated twice a year, it s easy to keep up with new blanks as they are issued. If you are looking for a blank that you might not have, KBX will show you all known substitutes for a given blank, with same or different bow shapes, and various shank lengths so that you can substitute when necessary. If you are looking for an X121, you ll find that you can substitute a DC-3, or an MIT2R, or a longer-shank TOY29, and so on. Some locksmiths cut down their inventory enough with this program that the savings pays for all the updates! The wealth of information and the time saved are just bonuses. You can even set up the program to point to the hook on your keyboard. This is useful not only for speedy key duplicating but also during code retrieval. One locksmith I know uses this feature along with his ITL machine to save a considerable amount of time. When a customer gives him a code number on the phone, he can look it up in COD, find the blank on his board using KBX, and cut the key on his ITL before the customer is off the phone! No Code Number? Use FILL On many cars the trend is to leave the code number off most or all of the locks. This can leave you in a situation where it National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

might be easy to get one lock off the car and decode it, but it doesn t have a full set of wafers, so you have only part of the key. Thus was born FILL: Fill the Combination. Covering most cars for the past 25 years and more, it lets you first choose the car or code series, then indicate what cuts you know, and then it goes to work. Blackhawk developed the program to take those known cuts, match them against the combinations actually used in the code series, and produce a progression chart for use on the car. Even on a slow computer, FILL quickly produces a list of all possible ways to complete the combination. Since it uses the actual code series, it shows only legitimate combinations, not everyone possibility whether used or not. At this point you can decide how feasible it is to progress the key. If there are only a few possibilities, progression is fast. If many, you know that it might be worthwhile to look for another lock with other wafers before proceeding. FILL can also be very useful in the shop to show a customer why the door lock he brought you isn t enough to make a key over the counter. If you decide to progress the key, a chart is quickly produced for your use. You can print it out and check off each key as you try it. Impress the Customer Sometimes a dealer wants the code number for the key you just originated for his car. We all know that by recording the blank and cuts we can easily reproduce the key, but sometimes your customer would prefer the code number. If you can provide it, you have a better chance of being remembered the next time your customer has a problem. RDA: Reverse Domestic Auto will take the cuts from the key and give you back all code numbers leading to that key. It covers Ford, Chrysler, and GM models of domestic origin. All you have to do is type in the combination and it then goes through its code lists and shows you the code(s). Historical Note KBX, FILL, and RDA were each the first programs of their respective types. COD has innovations that have yet to be matched by any other code software. All are incredibly easy to use, and very fast. Each is highly recommended for the automotive locksmith. 14 Servicing the Merkur Chubb Locks By Michael Hyde The Merkur Scorpio used a unique keyway in its first year in production, before switching to the Tibbe system. Only the Scorpio had the High Security keyway. The Merkur line lasted only four years and had only two models. The models were the Scorpio and the XR4Ti. The cars were sold from Lincoln-Mercury Dealerships. The XR4Ti was sold from 1985 to The Scorpio was sold from 1987 to The Chubb name is a popular one on locks made in Europe and a Chubb keyway can be found on some safes in Europe. 1. Original factory keys had a plastic code tag attached to the side. When you buy a door cylinder or ignition cylinder from the ASP or the dealer, it may come as a service package, including tumblers. However, it will not come with instructions on how to assemble it. This can be a really tough job for anyone. The Chubb key is a unique one. The key has ten cuts on each side and has different bitting on each side, but the key will work the lock no matter which way you insert it. There are five depths. 2. A closer look at the bitting. 3. The tumblers used are definitely different than most we have seen before. One side of the tumbler is different than the other. Each cut on one side of the key must have a matching cut on the other, they must add up to six. So if you have a #5 depth on one side, the other side in the same position must be a #1 depth. If you have a #2 depth on one side than you must have a #4 depth on the opposite side. The depths are determined by which way you slide them into the tumbler tube. National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

4. A view of the ignition lock cylinder. The entrance for the key looks something like a Bow tie. The cylinder also uses an active retainer. 5. A code is stamped on the side of the lock cylinder housing. The codes are not published because to determine the cuts you need to do a little math, which I will explain later. 6. To disassemble the lock cylinder you must first remove the clip on the rear of the lock. Use a pair of tru-arc pliers. 7. There is a retaining ring that must removed from the groove it sits in. 8. Use a small flat head screwdriver to accomplish this. A closer look at the retaining ring. 9. The tumbler tube can now be removed. Notice the position as it is being removed. This will be important when you reinstall it. 10. The ignition tumbler tube assembly. Notice the position of the ring that sits on the rear of the tube. 16 Winter National Locksmith Automobile Association

11. The only thing left in the housing is the dust shutter assembly. The shutter will slide out. 12. The dust shutter has only one moving part. The little actuator slides into the dust shutter housing, as positioned. 13. There are plastic spacers used between each tumbler. There are five tumblers and four plastic spacers. The tumblers and spacers are then followed by metal spring tension spacer and then a round plastic keeper. The end of the tumbler tube is curled slightly at the end, this is done at the factory. Once you load all the pieces in the tumbler tube, it will be necessary to gently force the plastic keeper in place. 14. A view of the tumbler tube. To code the lock correctly, make sure the combination you want is loaded in the tube, the side that is pictured up.. The stamping on the tumbler must be placed in the tube so it is facing you as you load it. 15. Another point to remember is that the plastic spacers must be placed in the tumbler tube the same way as to have the largest opening to allow the key to pass through them. 16. The ignition lock cylinder assembly is shown. National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

17. The door lock is pictured. There is a plastic trim cover on the front of the lock. The trim cover does not give you access to the cylinder. The components are removed from the rear of the lock. 18. There is a plastic tailpiece on this lock. The code number is stamped into the plastic of the tailpiece. 19. Remove the C clip and slide off the tailpiece. Be sure to mark the tailpiece and housing to determine which way to re-install it. In this case the cylinder spring came off with the tailpiece. 20. To disassemble the cylinder you will need to remove the white plastic sprocket on the rear of the lock housing. The plastic sprocket is a one way type, meaning you will have to break it to remove it. ASP sells replacements sprockets, their part number is P A view of the back of the lock with the sprocket removed. 22. The tumbler tube can now be removed, as shown. 18 Winter National Locksmith Automobile Association

23. The dust shutter assembly is a one piece unit. 24. A view of the tumbler tube. The tumbler tube consists of 5 combination tumblers, 4 plastic spacers, metal spring tension spacer and then a round plastic keeper. 25. As with the other cylinders on the car, the door lock cylinder tumbler tube is curled slightly at the end, this is done at the factory. Once you load all the pieces in the tumbler tube, it will be necessary to gently force the plastic keeper in place. The stamping on the tumbler must be placed in the tube so it is facing you as you load it. 26. A view of the door cylinder tumbler tube and components in the order in which they were removed from the tube. 27. A closer look at the metal spring tension spacer and the round plastic keeper. 28. The door lock cylinder disassembled. The white plastic sprocket is missing from the picture. National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

29. The trunk lock cylinder is pictured. 30. The plastic tailpiece is held on by a C clip. 31. Once the tailpiece is removed, you will then need to use a pair of tru-arc pliers to remove the tru-arc ring. The tru-arc ring is under spring tension. 32. The plastic sleeve and spring can now be removed. The cylinder can also be removed. 33. To remove the chrome cap off of the tumbler assembly you will have to remove the metal keeper. I have done a few of these and I can always tap the cylinder against some wood, for the keeper to just fall out. 20 Winter National Locksmith Automobile Association

34. A view of the tumbler tube. The tumbler tube consists of 5 combination tumblers, 4 plastic spacers, metal spring tension spacer and then a round plastic keeper. Once you load all the pieces in the tumbler tube, it will be necessary to gently force the plastic keeper in place. The stamping on the tumbler must be placed in the tube so it is facing you as you load it. 35. A view of the trunk lock disassembled. 36. When reassembling the components make sure you place the return spring in its proper place. The end of the spring with a 90 degree bend in it, goes into a small hole in the metal ring attached to the shaft of the tumbler tube assembly. The other end of the spring that is pointed up, goes into a slot that is milled into the chrome cap. National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

The 1997 Dodge Dakota by Michael Hyde Photograph 1. The new Dakota has been updated to look similar to the popular Dodge Ram full size pick up. The new Dakota uses an improved security ignition and uses the wide body tumblers in all locks. The door lock cylinder plug contains all eight tumblers. Photograph 28. The door lock disassembled is shown. HATCH LOCK SERVICING Photograph 30. All Mitsubishi Eclipse hard top models are Hatchbacks. Photograph 31. To service the rear hatch lock cylinder you must first unsnap the center plastic trim panel. The panel is made of thin plastic and uses very strong clips. I have serviced a couple of these models and on both I cracked the trim panel. Wholesale cost for this panel is around $ Be careful when removing the panel. 38 Winter National Locksmith Automobile Association

Photograph 32. With the panel removed you will need to remove the two 10mm bolts that hold the latch mechanism in place. Photograph 33. The outside plastic name plate/tail light center piece must be removed to get to the lock cylinder. It trim plate is held in by eight 8mm nuts. Photograph 34. The trim plate being removed. Photograph 46. A view of the glove box lock push buttons and springs. Photograph 45. Be careful of the spring loaded push buttons that open the latch. 42 Winter National Locksmith Automobile Association

Photograph 47. The lock cylinder plug is now ready to be removed. It is important to mark the plug and housing for easier re-assembly. Photograph 48. The cylinder plug contains four combination tumblers and a valet tumbler. Combination tumblers are in positions five through eight. The valet tumbler rides on the tip of the key. On a master blank there is a number two depth pre-cut for the valet. On a valet blank there is a number four depth pre-cut, to prevent the valet key from bringing the valet tumbler to the shear line. Photograph 49. Once the cylinder plug has been removed there is nothing to keep the two latch lugs in the housing. Be careful you do not let them fall out. National Locksmith Automobile Association Winter

MAKING FIRST KEY Method 1. Check owners manual for code, written in by the dealer. Method 2. Remove passenger door cylinder and read code stamped on lock. Method 3. Disassemble door cylinder or trunk cylinder, and decode wafers to make master key. Method 4. Disassemble the glove box and decode the tumblers. The glove box contains 4 tumblers in positions 5 through 8. Use Blackhawk Computer program called FILL to progression the remaining cuts. Method 5. Impression locks.
