1 95-97 Toyota Tercel & Paseo Short Throw Shifter Installation Manual Estimated Installation Time: Minutes Tools Required: -Philips head screwdriver and flat head screwdriver -Bench vise -10mm, 12mm, and 13mm Socket and ratchet -Needle nose pliers -Punch 1. Unscrew the stock shift knob by rotating it counter clockwise. 2. Use a Philips head screwdriver to remove the 2 screws on either side of the console just behind the shift boot. Sliding the seats fully rearward allows easy access to these screws.
2 3. Slide the front seats fully forward and use a Philips head screwdriver to remove the 2 screws on either side of the back of the center console. 4. Lift the rear portion of the center console out of the car and put in a safe place for re-installation. 5. Locate the clips at the top front portion of the center console. Gently push in the center portion of these clips with your finger or a screwdriver, and then pull out on them to remove them.
3 6. Pull the plate surrounding the stereo out slightly to free the front portion of the console. 7. Use needle nose pliers to disconnect the clip holding the cigarette lighter power connector to the steel bracket. 8. Disconnect the power connector from the cigarette lighter on the front portion of the console.
4 9. The front portion of the center console can now be removed from the car. Lift it up from the rear and pull up and out of the car. 10. Use a flat head screwdriver and a hammer to pry the clip on the passenger side of the assembly off of the shaft. Use caution during this step as the clip may break and become a dangerous projectile. Use the screwdriver and wedge it between the plastic assembly and the clip and gradually work it off the shaft. Alternatively, a Dremel tool may be used to cut the clip off as a new one is included in the kit. 11. Remove the clip from the side L shaped arm and slide the shift cable off the side arm.
5 12. Use a hammer and a punch or appropriate sized screwdriver to drive the pin out from the front of the assembly. 13. Use a punch or appropriate sized screwdriver to drive the spring pin out from the rear of the assembly as shown. 14. Remove all 4 bolts securing the plastic assembly to the floor of the car.
6 15. Tilt the assembly and remove the clip securing the base of the shifter to the shift rod with the help of a flat head screwdriver. The stock shifter shaft and top part of the plastic assembly surrounding the shaft may now be removed together. 16. Place the shifter and plastic piece which surrounds the main pivot ball in a tub of hot water for approximately 10 minutes to make the plastic more flexible. Remove the plastic part of the assembly surrounding the stock shifter by placing it upside down and applying pressure forcing it over the ball. This step may require a significant amount of force. Use caution not to damage the plastic piece. 17. Use the cup remover tool included with the kit to remove both plastic cups on the original shifter. To do so, place the cup remover tool on top of the open jaws of a vice, the jaws should be approximately 1 apart. Hang the shifter from the tool as shown, be sure the shifter is inserted completely into the slot in the tool. Insert a punch into the center hole through the plastic cup and tap firmly with a hammer to separate the original shifter from cup. Repeat for the 2nd cup.
7 18. Install the plastic cups you removed from the original shifter in the previous step onto the TWM shifter. Grease the cups and pivot balls. Place the cup on a firm surface and push the TWM shifter into it until it pops in. 19. Place the plastic retainer cup in a tub of warm water again to soften it in preparation to install it on the TWM shifter. 20. Apply grease liberally to the TWM short shifter main pivot ball.
8 21. Remove the plastic retainer cup from the tub of hot water and re-install it on to the TWM shifter. This step may require a significant amount of force. Use caution not to damage the plastic piece. 22. Push the steel inserts which are surrounded by rubber bushings out through the bottom of the shift assembly with a flat head screwdriver. 23. Push the rubber bushings out through the bottom of the shifter assembly.
9 24. Replace the shifter in the plastic assembly and re-install the bottom clip which secures the bottom of the shifter shaft to the shift cable. This is the clip that you removed in step 15 above. Insert the 4 aluminum bushings included with the short shifter kit below the plastic assembly in place of the rubber bushings that were just removed. Be sure to line up the small shoulder on the bushings with the hole in the assembly so that the step slides into the hole in the assembly. Secure the assembly to the floor using the stock bolts. 25. Re-insert the spring pin in to the rear portion of the assembly by tapping it in with a hammer. Replace the L shaped side arm and pin, and re-install the shift cable and clip on the L shaped arm. Use the clip included with the kit to secure the pin at the front of the shift assembly. Use a 13mm socket and a hammer to secure the clip on to the shaft, ensuring that the shaft is pushed all the way through the plastic assembly and that there is no play. 26. Re-install all console pieces and re-connect all clips and power connectors in the reverse order that they were removed in. Re-install the shift knob and you re ready to drive!
