3 All VENOLIA Pistons are constructed from tried and proven 2618 T61 or 4032 T62 alloys. A billet is heated to 800 F and forged using a 3000 ton high speed mechanical forge press to produce a fine grain structure in the aluminum which yields the absolute strongest blank possible. The use of a full skirt design increases bore stability and eliminates the problem of skirt or ring collapse under high cylinder pressures or extreme RPM. 6 Cam Milled Side Reliefs The VENOLIA special profile is designed to remove excess weight without sacrificing reliability. It is one of the most critical operations in piston manufacturing. The milling cutter follows the contours of the master and works in much the same way as a cam grinder. Note: Cam milled reliefs are standard on some types of pistons. Pin Buttons VENOLIA pin buttons provide positive pin retention in pistons. In replacing pin locks, buttons are used to support the oil rings when the oil ring must be in the pinhole on engines with large strokes. Power Slots Plug reliefs and power slots are essential for maximum performance in certain applications. In engine types where the dome of the piston blocks the flame front-travel or makes contact with the plug, reliefs are necessary. Tests have indicated that power can be increased significantly by putting in a large relief to facilitate proper flame travel. Snap Locks Truarc s and Spirolox s double snap rings are recommended for all racing applications where pin buttons are not desirable. Nitrous Oxide When ordering pistons for use with nitrous oxide, please make note on the order form or inform your VENOLIA representative. Please specify the approximate amount of horsepower you plan on adding with the nitrous. Due to extreme demands on piston integrity by the increased cylinder pressure and temperature, VENOLIA will use a slightly different design criteria to insure maximum piston durability under these conditions. Bore Size The skirts on VENOLIA pistons are ground to fit the bore size. When ordering pistons, specify the exact bore size on the engine block. When boring the cylinders oversize, it is advisable to use standard overbore sizes. The standard overbore sizes are.020,.030,.040 and.060. Valve Clearance The lift of the cam does not determine the amount of clearance required in the valve pocket, the amount of overlap does. Give us the valve lift at overlap at T.D.C. and plus and minus degrees from T.D.C

7 *Maximum Weight Removal Maximum weight removal utilizes every weight removing operation that is available. These processes provide the lightest piston for specialized use and are recommended especially for super stock and modified drag racing applications. M 1001 M 1002 M 1003 M 1004 *Angle Pin Oilers The oil pick-up hole is located in the oil ring land and is large enough to allow more than adequate flow. The openings connect with the pinhole allowing for full pin lubrication. The oiler system is not recommended on some applications (inquire before ordering). *Plunge Valve Reliefs VENOLIA has created special tooling to faithfully duplicate the underside of valves in the piston valve relief. The pocket matches the shape of the valve head. Note: Particular care should be taken when ordering tuliped valves as many engines are produced with a variety of valve head shapes. Furthermore, tuliped valve reliefs can affect flow in the chamber. M 1005 M 1006 *Vertical Gas Ports Gas ports allow cylinder pressure to pass directly behind the top ring and aid sealing ability. Cylinder pressure no longer flows past ring sides thus preventing ring flutter and loss of compression. *Lateral Gas Ports Gas ports allow cylinder pressure to pass directly behind the top ring to seal ring. This is required with minimum side clearance. 17 The proper choice of wrist pins can be critical to your piston assembly. It is important that the pin you choose be strong yet light enough for the intended application. Our wrist pins are developed specifically for use with VENOLIA Pistons and are available in all popular diameters, including straight and tapered with various wall thickness. Pins Standard Pins: Made from 8620 high tensile strength alloy that provides good ductility. The hard chrome finish provides excellent life. No Standard pins Super Duty Pins: These are the ultimate pins for strength. They are made from 4340 Chrome Moly carrying a minimum tensile strength of 240,000 P.S.I. and a 13% greater ductility than standard pins. Each pin is taper bored for lightweight and withstands test loads of 60,000 lbs.! They are hard chrome and can be ordered machined for buttons. 18 TOP RINGS.046 Chrome Stainless Steel Ring (K wall) This is the original stainless steel racing ring invented by VENOLIA in Since then, there have been many copies on the market, but none have the exclusive VENOLIA K wall design. The deeper K wall design helps prevent ring flutter and maintains ring seal at high RPMs. These rings will not chip, crack or break. They are good for supercharged engines and engines using gas ports..046 CHR/SST K-Wall Chrome Stainless Steel Dykes This ring is designed for special applications that require a very low pressure dykes ring type. The narrow.017 back face reduces pressure that can push out against the ring. We do not suggest this ring except for unusual circumstances. 20 DOME HEIGHT COMPRESSION HEIGHT AXIAL RING WIDTH BLOCK HEIGHT PISTON SIZE A PISTON SIZE B PISTON SIZE C 1. The cleaner your bores, the better. For best results: a. Thoroughly wash the block with a spray solvent gun. b. Wash thoroughly with soap and water. c. Using a can of spray oil (like WD-40 ) and a roll of paper towels, spray all the bores and allow to sit for a few minutes. d. Carefully wipe each bore with a clean paper towel. Check each towel to determine if there are any metal particles still left in the pores of the bore. The light oil will float the particles out of the pores. If the towel comes out dirty, keep repeating the process until the towels come out clean. PISTON CLEARANCE: With 2618 alloy, top of skirt.008 to.010. Bottom of skirt:.005 to.007. Air cooled engines usually require more clearance. MATERIAL Normally aspirated street race Supercharged, turbocharged street race Check your pistons completely for any burrs or sharp edges. Using a deburring knife lightly go over any sharp edges. Make sure there are no chips in the ring lands and pin locks left from machining operations. Thoroughly clean the pistons in solvent and blow them dry with a high powered air hose. DECK CLEARANCE MEASURED AT TDC WIDTH RADIAL RING WIDTH 3. Check all rings in their respective bores for proper end gap clearance. It is best to use a ring squaring tool to make sure the rings are square in the bore before measuring end gaps. Make sure you use a commercial ring filer to increase the end gaps and that it cuts the rings square. RING CLEARANCE: Side Clearance.003 to.004 ring gap:.004 to.005 per inch of bore. When fitting rings to cylinder bores, every.001 change in bore diameter changes the end gap by approximately.003. Diameter changes affect the gap by the factor of Pi An example of an increase in bore diameter of.002 increases the ring gap by Example:.002 x = Piston Orientation Front ROD LENGTH Replacement pistons for 8 cylinder Chevy & Chrysler motors: Cylinders 1, 4, 5, 8 are left pistons and have exhaust valve pockets on the left side. Cylinders 2, 3, 6, 7 are right pistons and have exhaust pockets on the right side. 90 V-6 Chevy motors require 4 left and 2 right pistons. 4. Install the rings on the pistons with a commercial ring installer to prevent damage to the rings. Place the end gaps at 90 to 180 degree intervals. It is best to place the top end gaps toward the torquing side of the piston. 5. Check for piston to valve clearance. This can be done by placing modeling clay on the piston domes and installing the heads and valve train and then rotating the engine. Remove the heads and check the clay thickness. It can also be accomplished with lightweight checking springs that are available from many camshaft manufacturers. 6. Have your block ultrasonically tested for cylinder wall thickness. On cast iron blocks,.150 is the absolute minimum. 7. Make sure the deck surface has been machined flat and smooth. If the engine is a V-8, the decks must be equal distance from the crank centerline and the decks 90 degrees to each other. Use torque plates that exactly duplicate head distortion. 8. Install the main caps and torque them to specs for all boring and honing operations

23 Sales Policy: All orders will be priced according to our current price schedule. A discount will be offered to all legitimate parts dealers or service shops. A copy of your business license or other proof must be sent before this discount is extended.
