1. ANALYZER INFORMATION The Sievers ICR Inorganic Carbon Removal Unit is designed to enable measurement of low level organic contamination in water in the presence of large amounts of dissolved inorganic carbon. This situation is typically found in the effluent of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane units, as well as in some municipal waters. The Sievers TOC analyzer determines the total organic carbon in water as the difference between measurements of total carbon and inorganic carbon in the water: TOC = TC - IC IC is defined to be carbon from CO 2, HCO 3 -, and CO 3-2. Sources of inorganic carbon include limestone and absorption of CO 2 from air. When the ratio of TOC to TC is less than 0.1, the accuracy and precision of the TOC result may become unacceptable. The Sievers analyzers automatically detect this condition and will report a warning message. In order to accurately measure the organic carbon (TOC) in this case, it is necessary to remove the IC before performing the measurement. Since the ratio of the non-ionic dissolved form (CO 2 ) to the ionic forms (HCO 3 -, and CO 3-2 ) depends on ph, addition of acid causes all the inorganic carbon to be present in the non-ionic dissolved CO 2 form: 2H + + CO 3-2 H + + HCO 3 _ H2 O + CO 2 ph < 4 Once the IC is in the CO 2 form, it can be removed by separating the CO 2 from the sample through a gas permeable membrane using vacuum on one side. The Sievers ICR uses this principle to remove nearly all the IC from a continuously flowing sample. The unit consists of a membrane module, a vacuum pump, an activated carbon and soda lime trap, a switching valve, and associated electrical, hardware, and plumbing components. 1-1

Figure 1-1 is a schematic of the Sievers ICR. The sample flows into the analyzer and is acidified using the acid reagent in the analyzer, then exits the analyzer and flows through the membrane module. The vacuum pump draws air at reduced pressure through the activated carbon/soda lime trap and through the membrane module. Carbon dioxide produced from the acidified sample passes through the membrane into the air stream and leaves the ICR through the pump exhaust. The activated carbon/soda lime trap prevents contamination of the sample stream from organic compounds and CO 2 in the atmosphere. The switching valve is used to bypass the membrane module, allowing normal TOC measurements even when the ICR is connected to the instrument. air inlet chemical trap hollow fiber module vacuum sensor vacuum pump sample inlet 4-way valve FIGURE 1-1: Flow schematic of Inorganic Carbon Removal Unit. 1-2

Manual 3. Accessory kit 4. Power cord Additional Equipment 1/4" open end or adjustable wrench. Phillips Screwdriver Installing the IC Removal Unit The ICR will require a space of 14 X 7 on the right hand side of the analyzer, the Pressure Regulator/Sample Block side. 2-1

Step One: Prepare the TOC Ensure that the TOC is in STANDBY mode and power OFF. Remove the power cord from the input socket on the left-hand side of the analyzer. If connected to a pressurized source, adjust all valves to turn off any flow to the TOC. Using the 1/4 wrench, remove the U -shaped stainless steel tube jumper from the right side panel of the TOC. (Two fittings: FROM and TO, see Figure 2-1.) Do not place the ICR near any heat source or hot exhaust. Step Two: Remove Pressure Regulator and Sampling Block from Analyzer (reference Figure 2-1 and 2-2) remove 1/16" SS tubing loop to install ICR TO ICR FROM ICR FIGURE 2-1: Removal of the 1/16 stainless steel tubing loop from the TOC prior to installation of the ICR. 2-2

Detach the Pressure Regulator by removing two screws that are positioned on the underside of the bracket. Carefully lay the regulator on the bench top, leaving the tubing attached. Be careful to retain insulators that are between the Pressure Regulator and the bracket. Detach the bracket which held the Pressure Regulator by removing the two screws. The screws that have been removed will be used in the next step. Disconnect the tubing that attaches the Sample Block to the analyzer. Use an adjustable or ¼ wrench to loosen the fitting. Retain tubing for use if ICR is not being used with the analyzer. Replacement tubing is supplied which will connect the Sampling Block to the analyzer after installation. Detach the Sample Block by removing two screws that are positioned on either side of the Sample Block. Carefully pull the Sample Block straight out, watching to capture the insulators that are positioned between the Sample Block and the analyzer. Lay the Sample Block on the bench top leaving the tubing attached that connects the Sample Block to the Pressure Regulator. FIGURE 2-2: Pressure Regulator and Sample Block Removed 2-3

Step Three: Attach the Sample Block and the Pressure Regulator to the ICR. (Reference Figure 2-3) Attach the Pressure Regulator bracket to the ICR using the same screws in similar positions as on the analyzer. Secure the Pressure Regulator to the bracket using the same screws. Be sure to replace the insulators between the Pressure Regulator and the bracket. Attach the Sampling Block to the ICR using the same screws in similar positions as on the analyzer. Be sure to place the insulators between the ICR and the Sampling Block. FIGURE 2-3: Pressure Regulator and Sampling Block attached to ICR 2-4

Step Four: Attach Mounting Plate to TOC (Reference Figure 2-4) Using screws provided attach Mounting Plate to side of analyzer. Use the holes that previously secured the Pressure Regulator and the Sampling Block to the analyzer. FIGURE 2-4: Analyzer with mounting plate attached Step Five: Secure ICR to Mounting Plate ( Reference Figure 2-4) Place ICR on Mounting Plate with pressure regulator and sampling block away from analyzer. The ICR will be attached to the mounting plate by three captive Phillips head screws in a later step. Thread the two tubes from the ICR to the analyzer. Using the ¼ wrench fasten the tubes to the analyzer s bulkhead fittings labeled IC Remover To From. These bulkhead fittings were used for the U-shaped stainless steel tubing removed in Step One. The tubing from the ICR is labeled FROM and TO, attach the ICR tubes to the analyzer s bulkheads labeled FROM and TO. See Figure 2-5 for reference. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN. TURN ONLY 1/8 TURN PAST FINGER TIGHT. Align holes in ICR bottom plate with the three captive screws in the Mounting Plate. Secure screws from underneath. 2-5

Step Six: Connecting the Sample Block Tubing to the analyzer. Attach supplied tubing to Sampling Block. Use the ¼ wrench to fasten the two tubes to the bulkhead fittings labeled analyzer inlet/outlet. Attach one tube from the outlet fitting on the Sample Block to the outlet fitting on the analyzer. Attach one tube from the inlet fitting on the Sample Block to the inlet fitting on the analyzer. See Figure 2-5 for reference. Sample Block Tubing Inlet and Outlet FIGURE 2-5: Top View of analyzer and ICR Step Seven: Preparing the black chemical trap Remove the 1/8 nut from the AIR INLET of the black chemical trap. Step Eight: Setting the Valve and connecting power Place the valve on the ICR front panel in the BYPASS position. VALVE HANDLE MUST TOUCH THE STOP IN EITHER POSITION. Step Nine: Reconfigure Auxiliary AC outlet on the Analyzer The ICR has been designed to plug into the auxiliary outlet of the analyzer. It is necessary to stop the ICR when the TOC is not making measurements. This can be accomplished by configuring the auxiliary outlet of the analyzer as a switched outlet under control of the TOC firmware. Once the outlet is properly 2-6

configured, connect the power cord for the ICR to the analyzer s auxiliary outlet. The power switch on the ICR should be turned on, and the valve placed in the ON-LINE position. WARNING: Prior to reconfiguring the TOC analyzer it is crucial to turn OFF the TOC Main Power and unplug the analyzer. WARNING: Configuring the TOC analyzer s auxiliary outlet requires access to the power distribution board inside the analyzer, this board is carrying line voltage. To avoid potentially dangerous shock, disconnect the analyzer s main power cord before opening the top panel. Reconfigure the Auxiliary Outlet of the analyzer - The auxiliary outlet MUST be rewired for switched operation under control of the analyzer s firmware. The white, three wire plug from the analyzer s auxiliary outlet should be moved to the position on the power distribution board labeled SMPL PUMP. The power distribution board is located in the front, left hand side of the analyzer with the cover open. See Figure 2-6. The connector position labeled SMPL PUMP may be the first or second position from the front of the analyzer, depending upon analyzer vintage. Remove the protective plug from this position, install the plug from the auxiliary outlet, and then install the protective plug in the position vacated by the auxiliary plug. WARNING: Once this change is made, the auxiliary outlet should be used only for the ICR. Attempting to use the auxiliary outlet for the autosampler or other equipment can result in damage to the equipment. 2-7

Connect the ICR power cord to the auxiliary outlet of the analyzer, see Figure

Step Ten: Making measurements (More information is available in the next chapter Operation) Using the ICR If the analyzer is connected to a pressurized source, turn on flow to the analyzer. Change the acid flow rate setting to double the normal flow rate for the water to be analyzed. (DI water, change from 0.2 to 0.4; Raw Water, change from 0.75 to 1.5, etc.) Start measurements. If the analyzer is off, then power up and start measurements. Turn on the ICR. THE GREEN LIGHT SHOULD COME ON AFTER A FEW SECONDS. Place the valve on the ICR front panel in the ON-LINE position. VALVE HANDLE MUST TOUCH THE STOP IN EITHER POSITION. Bypassing the ICR Place the ON-LINE/BYPASS valve on the ICR front panel in the BYPASS position. VALVE HANDLE MUST TOUCH THE STOP IN EITHER POSITION. THE ICR SHOULD BE BYPASSED FOR INORGANIC CARBON CALIBRATION OF THE TOC. Step Eleven: Stopping the ICR Place the valve on the ICR front panel to the BYPASS position. VALVE HANDLE MUST TOUCH THE STOP IN EITHER POSITION. Turn off the ICR power switch. The lights on the front panel should go off. IT IS PERMISSIBLE TO MAKE TOC MEASUREMENTS WITH THE ICR OFF ONLY WITH THE VALVE IN THE BYPASS POSITION. IF THE ICR WILL BE OFF FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME, IT SHOULD BE FLUSHED WITH CLEAN WATER IN THE ON-LINE SETTING AND THEN PLACED IN THE BYPASS SETTING. Step Twelve: Reconnect the analyzer s main power cord. The ICR is now installed for normal operations. 2-9

Installing the IC Removal Unit with an Autosampler For operation with an autosampler system, it is desirable to stop the ICR when the analyzer is not making measurements. This can be accomplished by configuring the auxiliary outlet as a switched outlet under control of the analyzer s firmware. If the ICR was not provided as part of the autosampler system, or the ICR was not installed with the autosampler by Sievers, refer to the instructions at the end of this chapter or contact Sievers for more information on how to properly configure the auxiliary outlet as switched. Once the outlet is properly configured, connect the power cord for the ICR to the analyzer s auxiliary outlet. The power switch on the ICR should be turned on, and the valve placed in the ON-LINE position (see Figure 2-3) before starting an autosampler protocol. WARNING: Prior to reconfiguring the analyzer it is crucial to turn OFF the Main Power and unplug the analyzer. WARNING: Configuring the auxiliary outlet requires access to the power distribution board which is carrying the line voltage. The power distribution board is located inside the analyzer. To avoid potentially dangerous shock, disconnect the analyzer s main power cord before opening the top panel. Reconfigure the Auxiliary Connector The auxiliary outlet MUST be rewired for switched operation under software control of the TOC. 2-10

Reconfigure the Power Cables The ICR has a power cable that must be connected to the analyzer s auxiliary outlet when used with an autosampler. This allows the ICR to be controlled by the TOC. In this configuration, the Autosampler or other accessories are connected directly to the main power, not to the TOC. See Figure 2-6. NOTE: Some power distribution boards only have five connectors, some power distribution boards have six. The connector used for the ICR is the connector labeled SMPL PMP. 2-11

3. OPERATION Making TOC measurements using the ICR requires properly configuring the TOC and the ICR. Measurements are then made by the TOC in the normal fashion. The performance of the ICR can be determined by comparing the IC channel reading during measurements with the ICR on-line and bypassed. This is described below. Selecting Reagent Flow Rates The ICR requires the addition of more acid than the recommended flow rates for operation without an ICR. For most water samples, an acid flow rate of 1.5 µl/min will be satisfactory when using the ICR. The actual required acid flow rate depends on the level of IC in the sample. The recommended acid flow rates for various IC concentrations are shown in Table I. Table I. Recommended Acid Flow Rates when using the ICR. IC Concentration Acid flow with ICR Acid flow without ICR ppm 3.0 µl/min. 1.5 µl/min ppm 1.5 µl/min µl/min. Deionized water Not applicable 0.2 µl/min. Changing the Acid Flow Rate To change the flow rates for on-line or grab sampling from the Setup Menu: Press the DOWN Arrow button to scroll to REAGENTS. Press ENTER. The Acid Flow Rate Menu with the new flow rate is then displayed. Double check that the value is correct. Press CLEAR to return to the Flow Rate Menu. This completes configuration of the TOC. Before making measurements, verify that the ICR switching valve is in the ON-LINE position. To change the flow rates for autosampler use, enter the appropriate flow rates into the autosampler protocol. Refer to the Autosampler Operation Manual for more details about entering protocols. Making measurements Place the ICR valve in the bypass position. Start the TOC by pressing CLEAR until the run-time display appears. The counter in the upper right hand corner of the TOC display will begin counting down, indicating the TOC is running. Place the power switch on the ICR in the on position and wait for the green light to illuminate, indicating sufficient vacuum is available. Move the valve on the ICR to the ON-LINE position. To make measurements with the ICR bypassed, simply switch the ICR valve to the bypass position. If the valve is moved in one motion to the stop, it is not necessary to stop the TOC. NOTE: 3-4

Operation of the TOC with the ICR valve in an intermediate position will stop sample flow to the TOC and damage the instrument. Always ensure the ICR valve is fully against a stop in either position. If the ICR will be bypassed for an extended period of time, it should be turned off. NOTE: It is permissible to make TOC measurements with the ICR off ONLY if the ICR valve is in the bypass position. NOTE: If the ICR will be off for a prolonged period, it should be flushed with clean water before placing the valve in the bypass position and turing off the power. Trapping high level samples in the ICR will lead to high background for several hours when the ICR is placed back in service. 3-5

Operation Information To check the performance of the ICR, run a 25 ppm (25,000ppb) IC standard with the ICR valve in the ON-LINE and then repeat in the BYPASS positions Compare the IC channel readings. With the ICR on-line, the 25,000 ppb IC should be reduced to 200 ppb or less. Ensure that the acid flow rate is set at 1.5 µl/min for this measurement. Table II shows some typical performance data for several units. Table II. Typical performance data for various ICR units. IC level with µg/l input TOC background IC background If the organic sample contains volatile organics, it is possible to remove organic from the sample in the ICR. This effect can be quantified for a given compound by preparation of a standard and measuring the TOC value with the ICR on-line and bypassed, and comparing the TOC results. The ICR contributes both organic and inorganic background that is measurable when running on ultra-pure water. Units are factory-tested and shown to contribute less than 10 ppb TOC before shipment. Table II shows the background levels measured for various units. To determine the background, operate the TOC on-line to a low TOC and low IC water source, and compare the TOC and IC channel readings with the ICR on-line and bypassed. The difference is the background reported in the table. 3-6

4. MAINTENANCE/TROUBLESHOOTING The ICR is designed to be serviced annually. The maintenance items are the pump diaphragm and the membrane degasser. Pump diaphragm Under continuous use, the vacuum pump diaphragm has a one-year service life. The actual lifetime of a particular pump diaphragm is difficult to predict, as it is a function of duty cycle, temperature, humidity, etc. Membrane degasser It is recommended to replace the degasser module each year of operation. Note that exposure of the unit to excessive sample pressure or high temperatures may damage the degasser or shorten the lifetime. Field service The ICR is field serviceable by factory trained personnel and can be serviced by customers with proper instruction. In some cases, repairs to the ICR will require shipment of the unit to Sievers Instruments for service. Prior to removing the unit from service, use Table III to identify common problems and take corrective action to see if proper operation can be restored. If it is then determined that the unit must be returned for service, follow the instructions at the end of this chapter. 4-1
