1 How to change GR6 transmission oil - The Nissan and the Aftermarket way Posted by NickTO, Feb , 01:41 PM With the availability of aftermarket transmission oil, it's now more frequent for people to undertake the oil change on their own. The procedure itself is rather simple if followed step by step. However, as people switch from the OE GR6 oil to aftermarket oils like WillAll or Pentosin, there are now a couple of undocumented steps that can be taken to ensure a thorough flush of the system. Here are the documented steps from Nissan. I've also added extra steps that are recommended if you actually switch to another lubricant. A. Draining the Oil. 1. remove the front diffuser (at the rear) to gain access to the transmission and heat shield.

3 4. remove the drain plug (1) AND the drain tube (2) from the pan. The drain tube acts as a level drain in the pan. Oil levels above the tube will drain out. 5. drain ALL the oil out of the pan 6. reinstall drain tube ONLY. B. Flush out the transmission with ATF. (Optional!)

4 This step is optional. It is meant for those switching to an aftermarket oil and wanting to ensure a thorough flush of the system. To flush the system, use affordable ATF Dexron III or VI. The key here is that the ATF fluid will be used to flush out the system. I don't know how big a warning to make the following statement, make sure you abide by it! DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR WITH ATF FLUID IN THE TRANSMISSION. MAKE SURE YOU DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AS SPECIFIED LATER IN THE INSTRUCTIONS SO THE CLUTCH PACKS DON'T ENGAGE. 1. Fill transmission through the fill hole (see Step A.3) 2. STOP filling when the oil starts dripping through the drain tube, indicating the transmission is full. 3. reinstall filler plug AND drain plug 4. Start the engine and put the car in Neutral 5. While depressing the brake pedal:

5 a. Put the car in M and to 1st gear for 5 seconds. b. Upshift the car still in M to 2nd gear for 5 seconds c. Downshift the car still in M to 1st gear for 5 seconds d. Put the car in Neutral This step is an important phase of the oil change as it activates the pump and flushes out the oil in the clutch pack, mixing the original oil back in the transmission case. As a flushing procedure, it's not a bad idea to do this gear engagement procedure TWICE. 6. Follow the instruction sequence A. Draining the Oil. to remove all the ATF from the transmission C. Filling Procedure The filling procedure is very similar to the instructions contained in B. but have more steps. In this step, use the aftermarket or OE transmission oil: NOT ATF!!! 1. Fill transmission through the fill hole (see Step A.3)

6 2. STOP filling when the oil starts dripping through the drain tube, indicating the transmission is full. 3. reinstall filler plug AND drain plug 4. Start the engine and put the car in Neutral 5. While depressing the brake pedal: a. Put the car in M and to 1st gear for 5 seconds. b. Upshift the car still in M to 2nd gear for 5 seconds c. Downshift the car still in M to 1st gear for 5 seconds d. Put the car in Neutral 6. Turn the engine off. 7. Remove the filler plug AND the drain plug BUT NOT the drain tube. 8. Top up the oil level until it starts draining from the drain tube 9. Reinstall filler plug AND drain plug. 10. Start engine, leave the car running IDLE in NEUTRAL. Monitor the

7 transmission oil temperature in the MFD until it reaches operating temperature of approx 50C (122F). 11. Repeat step C Stop the engine. Wait for at least 5 minutes, but NO MORE than 25 minutes. 13. Remove the drain plug BUT NOT the drain tube. 14. Allow the excess transmission fluid (above the oil tube level) to drain out. Reinstall the drain plug when the oil drips at 1drop/second. VERY IMPORTANT: if no oil comes out the drain tube during this step, the level is too low, repeat instructions from steps C.7 onward 15. Reinstall drain plug (Nissan recommends using a new drain plug gasket)

8 16. Reinstall Diffuser

9 sec ~ 9.0 (0.92, 79.7) ~ 28.0 (2.9, 20.7)
